Chapter 17
The next morning, I am shaken awake. "Hey love, please wake up," the voice whispers. "Joey?" I ask rubbing my eyes. "Yes it's me, Mia. Come on, we have to go," he says, pulling my arm gently.
"Go where? What's going on?" I demand. "Alan. He was going to get some Krispy Kreme for you girls and he got in a car accident, it's bad," he says.
"No. He's okay. He's waiting for me downstairs, ready to hug me. You're lying Joey," I say. Joey takes my hand, and leads me down the stairs.
A teary-eyed Brycie is sitting on the couch, Fallon and Kelsey attempting to comfort her. Chad and Caleb are trying to keep the three little girls entertained.
"Why isn't Alan here?" I ask. "Joey, you didn't tell her?" Caleb asks. Joey nods, "I did, she's in denial."
Chad comes over to me, "Hey sour patch kid, I know this is hard, but we're going to see Alan." I nod, "I know, Alan's at the studio, just finishing up a song, right?" I see Chad frown slightly, but I still pretend everything is normal.
"I'm gonna go get ready, I'll be back down in a few," I say, walking upstairs. I immediately dial Alan's phone number. When he doesn't answer, I shoot him a text.
Hey, love you ❤
Of course he doesn't reply, but it makes things better to pretend that he will, any second now.
I pull on my favorite t-shirt. It's light blue, and says 'let your smile change the world' in black. Alan's always loves it too. I pull on some white shorts, put my hair in a high ponytail, and slide on some flip flops.
I walk back downstairs, and meet everybody. "You can ride with me, and we'll get some Chick-Fil-A before going to the hospital," Chad says. I nod, "Okay, Chick-Fil-A, then the studio."
We get out to Chad's car, just the two of us, be he doesn't start the car, instead he grabs my hands. "Baby sis, I know this is hard for you. It's hard for all of us, but I need you to come out of denial. Yes, Alan's in the hospital, and we don't really have many details. But we're here for you. You just have to trust God, okay?"
"Bro, I was only pretending to save myself from crying. Especially in front of the kids," I say. Chad looks around, "There's no kids here. It's okay to let down your walls."
I begin sobbing uncontrollably. Chad rubs my back, but doesn't say anything. Once I've finally composed myself enough, we go to the Chick-Fil-A drive-thru. I just get a frosted lemonade, because I really don't want anything to eat.
I take my lemonade with me into the hospital. I grab Chad's hand, and he leads me into the elevator. We ride it for a few minutes in silence. We get to the floor, and get off. We walk down the hall, until we see the girls standing in the hallway with Joey.
"Uncle Chad, you're here!" They exclaim, running to hug Chad's legs. "Hey love," Joey says, leaning over and taking a sip of my lemonade. "Please don't, I'm not in the mood," I say. He nods, "Sorry."
"Where's everyone else at?" Chad ask. "Brycie's in there with Fallon, Caleb and Kelsey went to get some breakfast downstairs," Joey says.
"Are the girls allowed to go in?" I ask. "Yeah, but I don't want to take them. It might be too much," Joey informs me. "Joe, you stay with the kiddos. Chad, you come inside with me," I say, tugging his hand.
I enter the room, and break down crying. This is too much. "I'm going to the food court with Caleb and Kels. I can't stay here," I say getting in an elevator.
"Wait!" Joey says sticking his foot in the door, "Take Baby Rowe with you, please." I take the squirming baby from his arms, and take the elevator down to the first floor.
I walk, holding Baby Rowe's hand, into the food court. She walks towards Caleb her arms stretched out. "Somebody missed their Uncle Caleb," I giggle. Caleb reaches over, and picks her up, as she giggles.
"What's wrong kiddo?" He asks me. "I can't do it. I can't stand being in that room with Alan. He got hurt all because he was trying to do something nice for me," I sigh.
"Oh no hon, don't blame yourself," Kelsey says, wrapping her arms around me in a hug. "It's okay, girl," she whispers, "God's got this."
Caleb pulls me onto his lap, as I sit down, he hands Kelsey Baby Rowe. "Hey babe, can you give us a few?" He asks. She nods, and walks towards the elevator. "Bye-Bye!" Rowe giggles, waving at us. I smile and wave back at her, until the elevator door closes.
That's when the tears fall. The roll down my face Caleb's shirt. I cry for what feels like a long time. Finally, I feel like I've cried all the tears I have in my body. My nose is runny, and my eyes are puffy. "I can't lose him too," I say, my voice cracking.
"It's okay, my Mia. Everything will be alright," he says, kissing my hand, "Trust me princess." I nod, attempt a smile, as he hands me a napkin. I blow my nose in it, and get up from my seat on his lap. He hugs me tightly, before escorting me to the elevator.
"Just breathe, kid," he says, as we open the door to Alan's room. He slips his arm supportingly around my shoulder, and we walk close to the bed. Alan is awake.
"Hello my Mia," he says feebly. "Hi," I mumble, "I'm sorry this happened." He shakes his head, and I notice him cringe in pain, "It's okay, girlie, I'm feeling pretty good right now. How you taking it?"
I shrug, "Caleb here, has been trying to calm me down." He grins, "Well somebody does have to take my place. I'm glad it's Grimm Shady."
Caleb grins, and ruffles my hair, "I'm going to leave you two alone for a bit. Kiddo, I'll be right outside if you need me." He leaves, and gently closes the door behind him.
"You sure you okay, sweetheart?" He asks. I nod, and smile,"I'm fine, I promise. Do you know when you'll get to come home?" He shakes his head, "I'm not sure yet, but even when I do, what I do will be limited."
"Can I pray for you real quick?" I ask. He grins, "Of course princess, go right ahead." I reach over an hold his hand, before closing my eyes, "Dear Lord, please help Alan to heal quickly so he can go back to being his normal, weirdo self. Help all of us as we go through it with him. Give us strength, Father. Give me strength. Thank you for sparing Alan's life because I don't know what I'd do without him. Thank you Jesus for your countless blessings each day,. Amen." Alan squeezes my hand and whispers an 'amen'.
"Thanks pretty girl," he says, stretching just enough to lightly kiss my head. I nod, "Anytime. Do you want to talk to Brycie for a bit?"
"Yeah, but only if you're okay with that," he says. I grin, "Of course I am, I'll go bug Chadwick for a bit." He chuckles, "That's my girl."
I leave the room, and nudge Brycie. She nods, and enters the room. I walk casually over to Chad and hop on his back, "Why hello big bro."
"Hey crazy girl, I'm glad you're feeling a bit more happy," he grins. "Can I get some Starbucks?" I ask him. He nods, "I don't see why not. Ask Mr. Starbucks, I'm sure he'll volunteer to take you."
I walk over to Caleb, "Yo Mr. Starbucks, I want a vanilla bean frap." He grins, "Okay kiddo, lets go get you one." I nod, "Thanks."
"Anytime. I'm glad you've got some spunk now," he says, playfully shoving me to the side. I shake my head and punch him jokingly in the arm, "Thanks dude." We go back down to the food court, where I get my frap. Caleb gets himself a coffee before we go back to the waiting room.
"I'm still really worried about Alan," I sigh. "It's okay kiddo, he's gonna be okay," he says. I nod, and walk over to AveryJade and Presley.
"We wanna see daddy!" They exclaim. I turn to Caleb, and raise an eyebrow, as if asking what do we do.
"Girlies, we'll have to ask your mommy first," Caleb says. They run over eagerly to Brycie, "Mommy can we go see daddy with Uncle Caleb and Mia?"
Brycie wipes a tear from her eye, and turns to Caleb, "What do you think?" Caleb shrugs, "They're your kids." She nods, "Keep an eye on them."
I grab Presley's hand, and Caleb takes AJ's and we enter the hospital room. "Daddy! Daddy!" The little girls scream happily.
"Hey girlies," Alan grins, grimacing in pain. "Daddy, are you okay?" AJ asks. "I'm fine girls," he says, although it's obvious he's in pain.
Caleb and I carefully help the girls into the bed next to their daddy, and they seem to be content. "Daddy, can we get some ice cream before we go home?" Presley asks.
"Lovebug, I don't know if daddy's coming home today or not. I don't know about ice cream," he says. "Please daddy, Uncle Caleb will buy it for us," AJ begs. I know Alan's close to caving in, so I smirk, "Yeah, please daddy."
He manages a chuckle as he wags his finger, "I don't remember being your daddy, little girl." Caleb lets out a chuckle too and smiles, "I don't want to buy you kiddos ice cream, but if you ask Uncle Joe and Uncle Chad really nicely, I'm sure they will."
AJ and Presley both kiss their daddy's cheeks, and we help them out of bed. "Bye girls, I love you, be good," Alan says. "Love you too," they say, running to ask Joey their question.
"Love you Big Al, hope you start to feel better," I say, gently hugging him. "You too sweetheart, be good," he says kissing my head. "See, you are my daddy," I giggle leaving the room.
I get back into the hall, and see the girls still happy, hugging Joey's legs. "Please!" They plead. I laugh, and walk over to Chad.
"Hey Chaddy," I sigh. "Hey shorty, you good?" He asks, wrapping his arm around me. I nod, "Yeah, I guess." He raises an eyebrow, "You sure?" I nod, although I know Chad knows.
"Okay, honestly, I'm still worried about Alan," I say. "You saw him, he's gonna be fine, come on baby sis, Joe's getting ice cream."
