Chapter 3: The first day
A paw to the face was not how I was expected to be woken up, but Kuro's face was the first I saw waking up. Sitting up I could see I was the first one awake. Starting the day I got ready myself brushing my teeth using the bathroom and changing into my uniform before going up to Malfoy's bed.
"Wake up", I said shaking his shoulders. Malfoy mumbled "5 more minutes". I decided to let him sleep and moved on to Zabini.
"Wake Up", Zabini unlike Malfoy woke up immediately. Zabini stretched before sitting up and rushing into the bathroom. Notts was awoken by the noise I assume. He started to get ready for the day and after Zabini was done with the bathroom Notts went in. Zabini was on his bed putting on his robes.
"Malfoy. Time to wake up", I kept shaking his shoulders before grabbing Kuro off the ground as a last resort. "your turn Kuro", I put Kuro down on Malfoy's bed and he got to work. Kuro started by placing his paw on Malfoy's head and when that didn't work Kuro licked Malfoy's cheek. That woke him up.
"What the bloody hell?!", Malfoy said waking up in a frenzy. Looking around before his eyes were set on the black cat that was grooming itself innocently.
"I couldn't get you up", I said as Malfoy looked at me. He got up begrudgingly and left for the bathroom. Notts had just finished putting on his outer robe. We all waited for Malfoy to finish getting ready before leaving for breakfast.
We all made our way up to the Great Hall. People had already arrived and started eating. Food was already laid out eggs, pancakes, and other sorts of western foods I'd never had. I could see Parkinson eating before waving us over.
"Hey Pansy", Zabini greeted.
"Good Morning Parkinson", I say a smile on my face that doesn't feel real to me.
"Call me Pansy everyone does", Pansy says pointing at me using her fork.
"Alright Pansy", I say hesitantly not used to her first name. Sitting down Kuro jumping down from his spot on my shoulders onto the bench perched on his hind legs his front on the table sniffing around for food. Since Kuro was a bit older than a kitten his head could barely reach the table. I took a small piece of cheese and passed it to Kuro. Kuro jumped down from the table swatting the cheese between his paws before eating it and looking to me for more.
We were eating until the owls flew into the hall dropping papers. Dropping our schedules as we ate. Looking at my schedule before Malfoy grabbed my schedule comparing his schedule with mine.
"We all have the same classes", Malfoy says handing me back the schedule. We all finish eating and head to our first class Transfiguration.
Kuro jumped back into my arms and onto my shoulder as we left the Great Hall.
"What do you think we'll be doing in Transfiguration?", Zabini asks as we walked to class.
"Most likely we'll be covering basics since it is the first class", I say walking slightly slower.
"I guess, but I was hoping we'd be doing something more exciting!", Zabini says dejectedly.
"Why would we be jumping right into things?", Notts says an amused expression on his face.
As the group continued to talk till we reached the classroom, opening the door into the classroom. The layout of the room was similar to a lecture hall the tables in columns of three with pathways in between. At the front of the room, there was a tabby cat sitting front and center with boards behind it with instructions.
"I guess we just sit down and start the assignment?", Pansy questions. We all sit down Malfoy and I sit in the middle column second row. People started to walk in and sit down, and before long all the tables except one are all filled up.
"Whew, we made it. Can you imagine the look on McGonagall's face if we were late?", Weasley yelled running in along with Potter. I rolled my eyes at the two. Imbeciles. The cat on the table jumped off and turned into McGonagall.
"That was bloody brilliant!", Ron exclaims
"Thank you for that assessment, Mr. Weasley. Perhaps if I were to transfigure Mr. Potter and yourself into a pocketwatch, that way one of you might be on time", Mcgonagall says chewing them out. Why aren't they being punished?
"We got lost", Harry says. That's an excuse?
"Then perhaps a map? I trust you don't need one to find your seats", McGonagall said. Potter and Weasely ran to the seat in front of us. Throughout the class, they kept whispering and talking. It took everything in me to keep from cutting out the two's vocal cords.
After Transfiguration we had potions. I was curious about potions, if it was similar to chemistry, Kaji would often teach me the basics or talk about his process with his lemon bombs. Malfoy and I met back up with the rest of the group.
"That was so boring!", Pansy says stretching her arms.
"Honestly this school is going to the dogs", Malfoy says flicking his wrist.
"I was homeschooled I wouldn't know", I say.
We made our way down to the dungeon where potions class was held. I was reading my potions book finishing what I started. I had finished reading through my transfiguration, potions, and charms books. As I was reading the other three I was discussing potions and Snape.
"I heard he favors Slytherins", Zabini says
"He bashes on Gryffindors heavily", Nott chimes in.
"I'm excited to see both knocked down a peg", Malfoy says
I nodded along with them not paying attention. We reached the potions room the dungeon was lit with torches giving an eerie feeling that was familiar to me. We walked into the room filled with stone tables and cauldrons on an unlit fire. We sat down on the left side of the room. I sat next to Malfoy, Pansy sat next to Notts who was on my right. Crabbe and Goyle sat next to Malfoy catching up to us. There were a couple of people who were already in class. The only one I could name was Granger who sat in the middle of the room. The entire class made it before long, even Potter and Weasley.
"There will be no foolish wand-waving or silly incantations in this class. As such, I don't expect many of you to appreciate the subtle science and exact art that is potion-making. However, for those select few...", Snape says bursting through the door. He looked at me and Malfoy before continuing.
"who possess the predisposition, I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the senses. I can tell you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper... in death." Potter starts writing on his parchment. I brought my notebooks and stationery supplies to use in contrary to the ink, quill, and parchment these wizards use.
"Then again, maybe some of you have come to Hogwarts in possession of abilities so formidable that you feel confidant enough to not...pay...attention", Snape says bringing attention to Potter would be looking down at his parchment instead of listening to Snape.
"Mr. Potter. Our...new...celebrity. Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?", Snape questions him. Potter just shrugs in response. Honestly did he not look through his books? How did this ignorant boy defeat a 'Dark Lord'? Snape continued to ask questions as Granger continued to raise her hand to answer, while Potter continues to shrug in response to all his questions.
"Pity. Fame isn't everything... is it, Mr. Potter?", Snape says with a smirk on his face.
"Hermione knows. Since it's a pity not to ask her", Potter says with an attitude that reeks of confidence. This imbecile! Is confidence the same as stupidity in Britain?!
"Silence, Mister Kurayami what are the answers to my questions", Snape says a scowl on his face now not looking away from Potter. I was surprised but answered nonetheless.
"Asphodel and wormwood make a sleeping potion so powerful, it is known as the Draught of Living Death. A bezoar is a stone taken from the stomach of a goat and it will save you from most poisons. Monkshood and wolfsbane, are the same plant, but also go by the name of aconite", I answer.
"Thank you Mister Kurayami. Why aren't you all writing this down", Snape said walking to the front of his class. We started to be the potion Malfoy and I were partnered up. I was in charge of prepping our ingredients, and Malfoy tossed them into the cauldron. We finished our potion Snape came around to see how we did and give us a nod in approval. Longbottom and his partner weren't paying attention and Longbottom puts the quills in without taking the cauldron off.
"Move!", I tackle Longbottom out of the way. The failed potion missing us both.
"Are you okay?", I ask. Longbottom was still in shock from the potion spilling over. Longbottom stutters words I couldn't understand. I got up brushing off my uniform before helping Longbottom to his feet.
"10 points to Slytherin for helping a classmate. Potter! Why didn't you inform Longbottom to take the cauldron off the fire before adding the quills!", Snape chews out Potter. Class ended before long as Snape continued to take points from Griffindor.
"That was so cool how you tackled Longbottom out of the way!", Pansy praises.
"Where did you learn to do that?", Malfoy asked. I thought back to how things were back in Yokohama.
"I can't say"
Alright be secretive", Malfoy says with an amused smile.
We went to the courtyard to spend our free period. Malfoy was ranting about Harry Potter, Zabini and Pansy were talking about classes, and Notts and I were reading.
"Honesty it was satisfying seeing Potter knocked down a peg", Malfoy says biting into an apple.
"What is your deal with Potter?", Nott asked laughing.
"I would like to know as well. Potter doesn't have anything special about him other than his fame", I say not looking up from my book.
"What do you mean?", Malfoy says looking at me.
"One Potter has no spacial awareness, I could stand 5 feet away and he wouldn't notice me. Two he's small I could take him down within ten seconds. Three he is an imbecile, With how he acts in class he is arrogant and that is stupid", I explain. One of the lower-level workers could take him out with no issue.
"Damn, you thought about this haven't you", Zabini says.
"Come on. We don't wanna be late for flying class", I say getting up. The rest follow once they realize that if we don't leave now we'll be late. We get to the pitch Madam Hooch is already there with brooms on the ground laid in rows.
"Good afternoon, class", Madam Hooch says.
"Good afternoon, Madam Hooch",
"Good afternoon, Amanda, good afternoon. Welcome to your first flying lesson. Well, what are you waiting for? Everyone, step up to the left side of their broomstick. Come on now, hurry up. Stick your right hand over the broom and say, up!", Madam Hooch instructed. The whole class started to say 'up' attempting to get their broom to fly to their hand that was parallel to the ground.
I was standing next to Longbottom and another Gryffindor I didn't know the name of. Longbottom was struggling to get the broom up.
"Up", I call for the broom similar to how I commanded my shadows. The broom comes up to my hand. I turn right to Longbottom to see him struggling.
"You're hesitating. You had to be confident-", I say trying to help.
"Hey! He doesn't need your help you snake!", the other Gryffindor interrupted me.
"Fine", I said. I didn't want to start a conflict it would only make problems for me in the end. By now everyone had gotten their broom to their hand.
" Now, once you've got hold of your broom, I want you to mount it. And grip it tight, you don't want to be sliding off the end. When I blow my whistle, I want each of you to kick off from the ground, hard. Keep your broom steady, hover for a moment, and then lean forward slightly and touch back down. On my whistle...3...2...", The class has mounted their broom, but on Madam Hooch's whistle, Longbottom started to fly on his broom.
"Woah", Longbottom was terrified of the broom that seemed to have a mind of its own.
"Mr. Longbottom!", Madam Hooch tried. Are all wizards idiots?! The Gryffindor students started to call out to Longbottom.
"Mr. Kurayami I grabbed my own broom and took off after Longbottom. I managed to catch up to his broom. He got his robe stuck on one of the statues decorating the pillars of the castle.
"Grab my hand", I told him. Longbottom was blubbering incoherent words. I was fed up and just grabbed his hand. That was a decision I regret. Longbottom kept struggling even with me grabbing on. All his struggling caused his robe to rip and Longbottom to fall. I kept my grip on his shirt trying to pull him up while slowly lowering the broom. I manage to lower us to half the height before the extra weight caused me to slip myself.
I could feel a sharp pain in my left arm. I clenched my teeth in pain grabbing my arm. I could hear Madam Hooch run over, but not to me. She ran over to check up on Longbottom who was barely injured.
I used my ability to bind my arm. I had my robes still on and the long sleeve button-up shirt to hide the shadows clinging to my arm. Madam Hooch then made her way over to me.
"Mr. Kurayami that was an incredibly reckless thing to do! 5 points from Slytherin, but it was a very brave thing to do as well 10 points for Slytherin", she said before checking up on me.
"Oh You have a broken arm", She said as she tried to move my arm. I didn't yell, but I did wince at the pain.
"Everyone's to keep their feet firmly on the ground while I take Mr. Longbottom and Mr. Kurayami to the hospital wing. Understand? If I see a single broom in the air, the one riding it will find themselves out of Hogwarts before they can say, Quidditch", Madam Hooch says walking us to the Hospital Wing. We got there in a matter of minutes Madam Pomfrey not having any current patients.
"What happened?", Pomfrey said running over to us.
"Longbottom lost control of his broom, Mr.Kurayami here tried to save him", Madam Hooch explains.
"Honestly this batch of first-years are reckless as can be!", Pomfrey says leading us to separate cots.
"Why did you save me?", Longbottom asks. Why did I save him?
"I don't know", I really don't know.
"Thank you", That was the last exchange while we were in the infirmary. After we were excused I head back to the dorms skipping dinner. I've never saved someone why did I save him twice?
