Chapter Four

I laid awake that night. My chest felt tight, my thoughts drifting back to her every time. I needed to see her. To be in her presence.

My eyes drifted to my door as I rolled over. Her room is right next door. All you have to do is knock...

A knock suddenly bounced off my door, startling me up. Almost as though she could hear my thoughts.

I slowly sat up. "Who is it?"

"Who do you think." Came Ariel's voice.

With a deep breath, I rolled out of bed, opening the door for her. "What're you doing up so late?"

She walked into my room, taking a seat on the small couch in front of my bed. "Couldn't sleep..."

I gingerly sat next to her. "Neither could I..."

She rested her head on my shoulder, taking my hand in hers. "Can I ask you something..?"

"Sure..."

"Why do you think we were left here..?"

It's a question I had thought about a lot since day one. Why were we left here? What happened to everyone else? Did it really matter..?

"I don't know..." I replied in barely a whisper.

She let the silence carry on for a while before looking up at me. "Can I ask you another question?"

I nodded.

She smirked a little. "Why have you been acting so weird around me lately?"

The nerves in my gut grew. "Uh, what do you mean..?"

She rolled her eyes playfully. "C'mon, you know exactly what I mean."

I let out a little sigh. "Honestly..?"

She nodded.

I bit the inside of my cheek, looking at the floor. "I think I... Have a crush on you..."

She sat up, looking over at me. "Seriously? That is so cute."

I stood with a groan. "You're embarrassing me again."

She stood up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist, resting her head against the back of my neck. "Ok, I'm sorry... I think it's sweet... And..."

I turned my head to her. "And..?"

She shrugged, pressing her lips to the back of my neck. "Maybe I have a little crush on you to..."

I turned around in her arms, looking down into her green eyes. "You do..?"

She bit her lip, nodding. "What should we do about it..?"

I hesitantly rested my hands on her waist. "I-I think a kiss would be, um, a good place to start. Don't you?"

She smiled, nodding. "I do."

I nodded back. "Then, we'll kiss."

She looked at me expectedly. "Mhm..."

With a tight breath, I leaned down, softly capturing her lips with mine. The kiss was small, but it was enough to set my whole body on fire.

If only I knew what was coming next...

Ariel collapsed next to me, her breathing heavy. "You're really good at that..." She said.

I ran my hand through my hair, catching my breath. "I was just thinking that about you."

She rolled over next to me, her bare skin pressing against mine. "Why didn't you say something sooner..?"

I looked up at the ceiling. "I'm... Not gay..."

She chuckled. "Neither am I... But, seeing as though we're the last people on earth..."

"Not much of a choice..." I finished.

She kissed my cheek. "Could be worse."

I smiled. "You could be stuck here with Faye Dunaway."

She hit my arm playfully. "You really gotta let that go."

We spent the rest of the night laughing, our future seemingly set...

—————

Ariel and I made our way through the city street, passing rows of car dealerships. Every lot packed full of brand new cars.

"So, what're you in the market for?" Ariel asked.

A little smile pulled at my lips as I scanned the passing cars. Any one of them could be mine. All of them if I wanted. But, there was one in particular that I was looking for. "Well, I've always dreamt of having a Porsche."

She rolled her eyes playfully. "C'mon, honey, would it kill you to buy American?"

We laughed as she pulled her car into the local Porsche dealer.

We stepped out of the car and made our way to the main entrance.

Ariel held the door for me. "Right this way."

I walked in, my eyes traveling over the line of Porche's in the showroom.

"So, which one caught your eye?" Ariel asked, standing behind me.

I bit the inside of my cheek, letting my eyes fall on a white 1975 911 Carrera. "That one will do."

Ariel let out a whistle. "Excellent choice."

After finding the keys, I sat behind the wheel, Ariel closing the door for me. "Start it up."

I giddily turned the key, the sound of the engine bouncing through the showroom.

Ariel leaned on the door, smiling at me. "So? What do you think?"

I smiled back. "Sold."

"What do you say we see what this thing will do?" She asked.

I looked up at her. "What'd you have in mind?"

She grabbed her keys from her pocket. "Just follow me..."

Ariel lined her Camaro up next to my vintage Porsche, rolling her window down. "First one to the third light wins. Loser has to cook dinner."

I revved up my car, looking out over the deserted road, excitement coursing through my veins. "I hope you know how to cook Italian."

She revved her car. "We'll see about that."

On her go, we took off. The sounds of our cars bounced off the derelict buildings. She was fast, but not fast enough.

I effortlessly shifted through the gears, staying even with her car.

She looked at me through her window and I flashed her a wink before pressing the pedal down harder, inching past her for the win.

I skidded my car to a stop a few feet in front of hers, stepping out victorious. "And that's how it's done, my love."

She stepped up, pulling me into a quick kiss. "Jokes on you, I can't cook..."

—————

We stood over the memorial I built for my family so long ago.

"Do you ever miss them..?" Ariel asked, standing next to me.

   I nodded. "All the time..."

She kissed my cheek, wrapping her arm around my waist. "I wish you could see them again..."

I rested my head against hers. "I do to..."

We stood there in silence for a while before I finally pulled my eyes from the graves. "We should get going, it's getting dark."

Ariel followed me back to the car, getting in the drivers seat.

I looked down at my feet, a few tears threatening to spill over.

Then, she took my hand in hers. "Hey, you ok?"

I sucked in a tight breath, nodding. "Yeah... Thank you for coming with me, today."

She rubbed the back of my hand with her thumb. "Of course..."

That night, we laid awake in her bed. "If we could... Would you have a kid with me?" She asked.

I nodded my head before facing her. "You would make a great mother... You and the kid working out in the garden..."

She looked up at me, smiling. "I would love that..."

I wrapped my arms around her, spending the rest of the night dreaming about children that'll never be...
