That's the thing about love. In front of it, even the worst seems innocent.
----------------------------------
I wake up to the feeling of slender fingers running on my hair. I was sleeping with my head on Lan Zhan's chest and he had one arm wrapped around me.
I blink a few times to send the sleep away and look up at him. He was awake and had his phone balanced between his fingers and his chest.
"Good morning." He says once I'm fully awake.
"Good morning." I yawn. "What are you looking at?"
He turns the screen towards me and I could feel the blush on my face.
Wang Lingjiao's post was on it, the comment I sent with Lan Zhan's account showed on the screen.
I almost forgot about it. Why do I feel that it was childish to do it?
God... this is embarrassing.
"Sorry," I mumble, hiding my face on his chest.
He chuckles. "Were you jealous?"
"I'm not! Why would I be?" I sat, trying to sound casual.
"If so, why did you reply?" he asks with a smirk.
"She's annoying."
"You are jealous."
I groan at my unsuccessful attempts of keeping my cool. "I'm not jealous. I'm just... possessive."
He laughs. "Sure you are."
"Wei Ying," he says after a while in a serious voice. "You know that her post means nothing to me, don't you?"
"Yeah," I reply. That's when I start processing the complete meaning of what he asked. "Hey, I know. I don't doubt you, Lan Zhan. I trust you more than myself." I show my hand with the ring to him. "See, you're bound by a promise."
That makes him smile. He nods and kisses my forehead.
"Look, I want you all to myself." I confess "So it's hard to stay silent when people come behind you. Don't misunderstand okay?"
He turns to his side, facing me. He caresses my cheek. "I'm yours, Wei Ying. You don't have to worry about that."
"I know. I love you."
He kisses me.
Of course, he's mine. I don't dare to doubt him. Even if I dared, I don't think I can doubt him.
We stay there looking into each other's eyes for a while.
"Come, let's have breakfast." He finally says. "It's late."
"Noo," I whine as I hug him, trapping him between my arms. I put my leg over his, making it impossible for him to escape. "Stay here. You're warm."
He smiles as he wraps his arms around me, pulling me close, and I know that I won.
When I go back home, Cheng was nowhere to be seen. Well, I had an inkling of where he is. At least, I hoped.
Awesome. I can spend some time alone.
I played some games, had lunch alone, played my guitar with the maximum volume because there's no one to yell at me, and now I'm lying on the couch reading my notes.
After thirty minutes or so, I hear the door open and Cheng appears in the living room. He was typing on the phone, with a rare expression on his face, proving my assumption about where he was.
"Whoa, look at that smile," I say making him aware that I was in the room. The smile disappears back to the grumpy cat mode.
"Shut up." He's back.
He removes his jacket and jumps to the armchair on the other side.
I just stare at him. I know he becomes self-conscious when I do that and that's the best way to get his attention.
"What?" he barks.
"You went on a date I guess," I say.
"None of your business."
"Well, the date was probably with a woman who's two years elder than you, who is like my sister. Of course, it's my business."
"Says the person who's dating a guy."
Haha. "No answer to that."
He shrugs and goes back to typing but I know that I have his attention.
"So it wasn't a one night stand?" I ask with a smirk.
"Why the hell would I do something like that?"
"Well, you were somewhat drunk and you're mostly pent and she's pretty and-"
"That's enough."
"What? Wasn't I telling the truth?"
"No!" he yells.
"Tell me, which part of it is a lie?"
"Everything." He says nonchalantly.
"All right, I'm going to text Qing. 'Cheng says that you're not pretty.'"
He growls. "Fine, what do you want to know?" he asks, irritated.
"How long?" I ask.
"Two weeks."
"Not bad," I say and he growls in reply.
To be honest, it's good. Cheng is a person who needs someone to keep him in line. Shijie had been doing it for both of us for as long as I can remember. Now, since she's not around most of the time, I guess he should have someone like Qing in his life.
I just hope those two hotheads wouldn't kill each other.
A few days later, Xingchen and I skipped the morning class since both of us were tired because of the gig we had the day before.
We played till late and then Lan Zhan kept me up most of the night, leaving me too tired to function. We decided to use that time to have a nap in the music room rather than being unproductive for the rest of the day.
When we go out of the door the corridor was empty. Since we were already late, we decided to take the short cut, so we go in the opposite direction from where we usually go. When we were a few meters away from the door, we hear Cheng's voice behind us.
"Xian." He yells. He was panting as if he had run a mile.
"Whoa, you're skipping today?" I ask with a smirk. It's a very rare thing; him skipping classes at his own will.
"Come with me. Right now." He says in his don't-mess-with-me tone.
"What's-" I start.
"Cut the crap and come with me right now."
"Owkaay."
"See you guys later then," Xingchen says and Jiang Cheng turns around and walks to the same side he came from. I shrug at Xingchen and go after him.
He doesn't utter a word on the way. He kept on walking like a grim reaper till we reach the back of the auditorium. After making sure that no one's around, he finally looks at me.
"What the hell is this all about?" I ask.
He just takes his phone turns it on and holds it right in front of my nose. I take it to look at what he was showing.
It was an article, from the magazine of our old school. And yeah, about the most shocking rumor of the year. The guy who killed his girlfriend.
"Why are you showing this to me?" I ask.
"Do you know where I got this from? This shit was group texted to almost everyone."
I stare at him for a good couple of seconds. "You're kidding."
"Why would I?" he scoffs. "It's spreading around. Again."
I take a deep breath. If there's one thing I've learned, that is that I should stay calm.
"Who sent his?" I ask.
"Wen Chao. If you kept your fucking mouth shut, none of this would have happened."
"What are you talking about?"
"Seriously?" he scoffs. "That comment you sent from Lan Wangji's account. Do you really want me to believe that he insulted Lingjiao online at two in the middle of the night?"
I stare at him for some time, too frozen to say anything. "But they don't know that it's me. They think it's him." I mumble.
"That's the whole point!" he yells. "He has a clean record. So they're digging your shit up."
I hate it, but it makes sense. Telling Wang Lingjiao that we're dating, then the tweet. Of course, this is revenge. This is not the first time Wen Chao has ruined someone's reputation for her say.
"Cheng, don't freak out-"
"Don't freak out?" he yells. "We were nearly kicked out of the school because of this shit. That looks bad enough. Look Wei Wuxian, I don't mind if you hook up with anyone, I don't mind if you're gay, I don't care if you kill anyone for fuck's sake. But your shit affects me. Ruin your life whatever the way you want. Keep me out of it."
The fear and anxiety he felt were all visible in his eyes. He is silent. Either he was waiting for a reply, or he ran out of things to say, I don't know. But I know that what he said is true. All I do is cause trouble for people who care about me.
"If the same thing happens again, I won't forgive you Wei Wuxian." He snaps.
He turns around and walks away with no more words, leaving me stuck in such a dangerous place. My own mind.
