Chapter 9: Untrained

Okay, listen up. You need to always watch for Trad's pov, because that means something cool's gonna happen. Like this:

Trad's POV:

Robin only nodded quietly to me as she moved forward. I could practically feel the power flowing off her. It made sense, though she should be stronger than that, with her power. Of course, it could work the opposite way, maybe empowering her aura instead of quelling her emotions.

It's my job to ask myself these questions, since no one else will. And if our bladers don't, I will. I'm the beytrainer, I have to.

Free had more or less shredded her bey the first time they battled, but her Phoenix had been badly damaged. Don't think I couldn't see that. I may not have a beyblade, but I can see every single detail in the room, and my photographic memory is a perfect match for it. Each blader who's been here for more than a week has all their information stored in my head, from their launch patterns to stabbing their finger into their palm when they get anxious to how many churros each person wants on Tuesdays.

Free watched her silently, his head tipped to one side. His hand briefly touched his launcher, hesitating before pulling it out. I smiled grimly. He's never liked to lose, and he's actually nervous about the results of this. So he knows something about Phoenix I don't, meaning I need to watch this match way more carefully. On top of that, Robin's new bey seems to have evolved, which if previous data is anything to go by, then she'll have a whole new battle style to compliment it. She seems a little off, though, like she's purposely holding something back.

Sasha gasped as he attached Fafnir to his launcher. "You're using your launcher?"

He gave her a look that clearly expressed impatience. She responded with an obscene gesture, which made the rest of the team laugh.

"Despair Phoenix," Robin introduced briefly, holding up a beautiful shard of metal and plastic that looked more like a knife than a beyblade. Red, silver, and black was used around the phoenix that made up the blades on the energy layer. "But I assume you already knew that."

"Drain Fafnir," he returned the introduction, presenting the gold and green beyblade that represented Andi's favorite transformation. Speaking of Andi, if I have to replace that roof one more time because of her, I'll... I don't know, make her cook while Ange takes a vacation? Is that even a punishment?

Robin knelt in the exact same stance she had before, except her hips were turned slightly to the left. It was too far behind the stadium for Free to see, but it was clear to me. Her eyes glowed, and Free's turned that yellow-orange color he always tried so hard to hide away.

There's a demon inside me, Trad, and I don't want to let it out.

I shook the thought out of my head. "Ready... set!"

"Three!"

"Two!"

"One!"

"Let it... rip!"

Free launched with a zombie-like expression, Fafnir hitting the stadium without so much as a vibration, while Robin went with a vicious pull on her ripcord, brutally shoving the launcher toward the wall on Free's side. Phoenix, a grey blur, bounced off the wall and launched into the air while Fafnir spun in the center, using minimum power on flat ground. The grey beyblade nearly crashed into the energy layer before Free called, "Fafnir! Lines!"

Fafnir streaked out of the middle just before Phoenix crashed down, causing cracks to stream across the beystadium. Robin was sitting in saizo position, head bowed and eyes closed, likely using all her focus on directing Despair Phoenix. From how she was clenching her teeth it looked pretty difficult.

Phoenix didn't move from the center. The mythical bird on the energy layer seemed to glow. Robin spoke quietly as Fafnir gained speed and raced down at her. "S-shield Launch."

Robin really was glowing, her body emitting a ruby-colored light. When I looked around, Free was glowing an emerald color. Sasha shone a royal purple, Valt Aoi a rich blue, Stan brownish-red.

That was most definitely Robin's aura influencing our own as the two beys collided. I made a mental note to have her taught to control it.

Then we all felt Free's energy. It was a literal ocean, completely infinite in its source and impossible to drain. Robin started to shiver as their wills collided again and again as our top blader bounced off various walls and hit the grey beyblade.

Robin suddenly shuddered and shook her head. "What the--" She was clearly thinking about that insane power we are all sensing right now. A wave of something I can only describe as warmer washed over us, forming a thin barrier. Robin's energy, and I highly doubt she realized what she was doing.

And suddenly Phoenix burst.

Robin's eyes snapped open and she jolted back in surprise. "Huh?"

"Two points to Drain Fafnir," I sighed, excitement gone. "Again."

"Again," Free agreed with a half smile.

Stan gasped. "You made him smile! Teach me your secrets!"

"No."

Everyone's auras faded as Robin looked around, clearly startled.

Valt started clapping. "OH MY GOSH THAT WAS AWESOME AND --"

Sasha covered his mouth. "If I go deaf, it will be you who pays for it," she mumbled in his ear, which I could still hear. I told you, I notice just about everything.

As you can guess, my Obsessive Compulsive Disorder starts to come in handy at some point.

Kris approached me, and I nodded. "Continue practicing. We'll have the results by tomorrow."

Valt whined. This kid was kind of getting annoying, but he was somehow super cool as well.

I hate contradictions.

"Can't you give us the results no-? MMF!" Sasha put her hand over his mouth again.

"What did I just tell you," she growled. Andi glared at her, and after a muttered warning, she released Valt. Good timing, because he was about to pickpocket her bey.

"So what do you think, Trad?" Kris asked at her office. She hugged her teddy bear, the one that I got her as a birthday present.

I sighed. "Not even close to what we need. Embarrassingly, the closest are the new people, specifically... Valt Aoi."

The door open and shut. Free walked in calmly. "Rantaro Kiyama, Valt Aoi, and Robin Kurenai?"

Kris facepalmed. "Free, could you not!"

He didn't bother apologizing, as we all knew he wasn't particularly sorry. "What about Valt?"

"He has the most potential," I said. "According to what I've seen, he's the one who lasted the longest without using any powers. But he's a joke."

Free's eyes started to glow, but he frowned and they immediately went back to black. "Don't underestimate him."

"Kiyama's almost worse than Valt," I added helpfully, partially because his reaction might be hilarious. "And Robin's basically an untrained mess with her power."

"I was an untrained mess," Free pointed out. "Then..." A hint of his ice-cold power whispered across the room. "And..." He briefly shut his eyes, and the wind stirred, ruffling the teddy bear's bow. "That."

Kris smiled. "Show off. And I'm asking Trad. You get your turn after."

He pouted, slumping on the couch. I tried not to laugh, and continued. "As I said, Valt did the best altogether, but no one's up to standards but Andi." I scowled. "You know what the other clubs say about us? We're all fakes riding Free's coattails to the top."

"They're all morons," Free mumbled sleepily from the couch. He let out an adorable yawn.

"And why do you think that?" I try not to yell at him for interrupting. I don't know if that counts as an OCD thing, but being interrupted annoys the heck out of me. "Not all leaders are stupid."

He smiled at me and yawned again. "I don't have coattails. I don't even have a coat." Free fell asleep. I really wanted to slap him for falling asleep, and then go to sleep too.

Kris shrugged. "Then who do you want to put up this time? Since we've got the hometown advantage, we need to look unbeatable, but I know you already know that.."

I opened my mouth to say, the usual. Sasha, Free, Andi, and Stan. But I never got to. The phone rang, and my best friend picked up. "BC Sol, how may I help you?" she asked in formal Spanish. Normally, we use Japanese, as that's where a lot of our bladers seem to come from, but the song the phone started playing was one keyed to calls from Spain.

I listened as she held the phone to her ear. "No need for formalities," the person replied in flawless Spanish, with only a hint of an accent. "I was hoping I could help arrange your lineup. I was just hoping you could put in my friends Valt, Robin, and H-- Rantaro. Specifically Rantaro."

I already knew who it was. Rantaro's relationship wasn't exactly secret, and there was only a few people who could speak Spanish and called Rantaro Honcho.

"Who is this?" Kristina asked.

"Wakiya Murasaki."

"What do you mean, get out of here?!" Robin yelled.

Sasha stood her ground. "You pervert! Get out!"

"I'm just waiting in line for the showers!" Robin folded her arms stubbornly. "What's wrong with that!"

All she had done was stand in line like all the other girls did. Her hair was securely tied into a knot, making the angles of her face more boyish. She liked it this way better. Sasha just started yelling at her for absolutely no reason.

Andi ran out, wearing a towel. "What's going on!!! I'm trying to shower in peace!" Her towel slipped slightly lower and she adjusted it. "You'd better solve it by the time I come out again, or you're both battling for the rest of the night!"

As she disappeared, she glared at Robin, who glared back. "Bet you enjoyed that, didn't you?"

Robin was just plain confused now. "Enjoyed what?"

"The prettiest girl on BC Sol in a towel!" she burst out, a little bit of pink in her cheeks.

"Why would I enjoy that again?"

Sasha grabbed her roughly. "Stop pretending! Stay in the boys line like you're supposed to!"
Robin went slack, then started laughing. "Y-you think.." she gasped, trying to breathe. "I'm male? HAhahHHAHAHAHHHHHHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAaaa!!!"

Sasha blushed. "What's so funny, you dumbo? The only funny thing I see is you!"

The white-haired girl stopped laughing and pulled her shirt tight around her. Unfortunately, she was flat as a pancake, so it wasn't very obvious. Sasha frowned. "What the hell do you think you're doing?"

"I'm glad," Robin explained. Sasha blinked, then gasped.

"Wait. You're a girl?" She turned red. "Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry! I thought you were a boy!! My bad! It was an accident!"

She started stammering, and Robin laughed. "Did you prefer it when I was a boy?"

She tugged the hair tie out, letting her hair tumble out.

"N-no!" Sasha stuttered. "I-no, of course not. That's stupid."

"Almost as stupid as-"

"Can we pretend this never happened?" She begged. "If you do, I might not even kick you out of the showers."

Robin shrugged. "That's fair. By the way, how did Trad make Free smile earlier? I thought Andi said he didn't smile."

Andi emerged from the shower with actual clothes this time. "Oh, you didn't know?"

Sasha smirked. "It's pretty dirty!" she sang, poking her with every word.

Robin was mystified.

Andi grinned. "Free and Trad are lover with benifi--"

A yellow blur launched itself at the blonde and sent her out an open window. Free, naturally. There was no way that would kill her, but it would shut Andi up for sure.

"I wonder what she was going to say?" Robin wondered, for once being the most innocent in the group.

Bonus content: Trad's POV

I walked through the halls, checking to make sure everyone was asleep. Of course, I could hear any of them from the fifth floor up, but I like it anyways.

I looked at the next door. Closed, as I expected, and each grain was magnified to my eyes. Everything was starting to get a little too bright and too loud, even the quietest sounds. My head was starting to hurt.

A whisper of icy wind wrapped around my neck. My hair fluttered. So did my heart. In all of the world, there was only one person who could make my brain turn off.

"Working so hard," Free sighed from behind me. For all my skills, I can never sense Free when he's the one walking. He moved forward, hand brushing my shoulder as he turned to face me. His huge grey eyes were half-lidded and sparkling. "Why don't you have a little break?"

Free's lips, warm and delicate, brushed mine. He gently stroked my hair, eyes closed. I leaned into it, but he playfully pulled back. I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his shoulders. There, now he couldn't escape me. I pressed my mouth against his, that adrenaline everyone talks about rushing through me.

"You need to rest every now and then, you know." His voice lowered to a seductive purr. "Take the night off."

Something was burning. I think it was my face, and probably my whole body. My lips met his again, kissing each other deeper right there in the hallway, and I started tugging him towards my room. Thank goodness no one was here to see this.

His fluffy hair tickled my ear as Free's lips traveled down my neck. I was pretty glad my outfit includes a turtleneck, because I did not want to see what my neck would look like tomorrow.

Darkness covered my eyes, and at least my vision was blurry now. That meant it was my room. Free pushed me into the bed and climbed in too. He continued kissing me, but I knew he wouldn't go too far with it. "There's a demon in me," he murmured into my skin. "Won't you hide it away?"

I tugged his shirt off and hugged him. "Hmm..." I whispered against his muscular chest. "Lets see..."

I don't feel like telling our readers just what they were doing in there, but I don't really care what you think. This is between Free and I, so deal with it.

He yawned, an adorable sound. Free curled around my head like a pillow. "Good night..."

I brushed a kiss against his forehead. I could already feel my neck beginning to bruise, and it felt good. Free was here, he was a constant, and I loved him. Every day I have to hide it from the other members of Sol, it's so difficult. Hundreds of moments in between practices: a quick kiss in the hallway, a brush of hand against hand in the cafeteria, a shared look in Kristina's office, and the few minutes when he actually shows up to practice.

But I didn't care about that then. All I cared about was Free. "Goodnight, my love..."
