Marshmallows
The sunshine smile welcomed me home
That day, of sweet surprises awaiting me.
I remember how you hugged me close,
We would always be together.
The two of us. Alone.
Smell of marshmallows filled the air,
Along with crying laughter,
Moving through the wind.
The sweet taste of white foam
Like the creamy pastries mother used to make.
Looking at her photos I can finally remember
That once upon a time she knew how to smile.
It was during those times of
The pink candy, white teddy bears,
Frail dandelions and chalky crayons.
All the ingredients of my childhood.
The secret one being you, Mother how I loved you.
But you were made of marshmallows.
The strong, blazing kind and yet
so sweet and soft inside.
They cracked your shell open,
And took the treasure you held inside.
Your heart, your smile. All was gone and yet
You still looked like sunshine.
You hid a monster under my bed,
The one you claimed to love so much,
Or rather, claimed to have loved us.
And yet would come to haunt my dreams
Every liquorice night.
You tried hard to fight him off but then
Invited him home by the awakening of daylight
Then let him take everything away.
Your brittle smiles cracked open.
Did you not know?
All the pieces of fabric that made darkness black
Had his name woven in threads.
Was it your fault? Was it mine?
Was it the hatred our home
was growing inside?
Your eyes made of cupcakes
Your hair made of candyfloss
Your lips made of chocolate
A heart made of smiles,
Sunshine and laughter
Coloured with the rainbow
And sprinkled tears on top.
The smell of Earth, life and innocence
Your warm, loving voice
Singing me stories to sleep
The sweet and soft and the blazing kind.
How I wish I had a soul like yours
Made of naivety, blazing fire,
Delicate flowers of all shapes
And a beating heart glowing love
Made with the sweetest of marshmallows.
