iii. a walking tree and raccoon, nothing new
03 | A WALKING TREE AND RACCOON, NOTHING NEW
Nate and Zari were both on guard duty. The two didn't think it was necessary at all for a well armed time ship, but none of them said no to Sara. The two spun around in their chairs lazily, bored expressions on their faces.
The rest of their team were either sleeping, training or repairing their gear, which made the two envy them slightly. Sara had also strictly told Gideon to prevent any distractions for the two, who had begun playing rock, paper, scissors just to pass time.
The two were so invested in their competitive game that they almost missed seeing a bright blue flash of light that zipped past the ship, the force powerful enough to knock the Waverider to the side with a rumble. Both Nate and Zari yelped and tumbled out of their chairs, grabbing onto the arm chairs for balance.
"Oh, shi-" Nate was cut off when a loud explosion occurred from somewhere behind, more followed after it.
"I am detecting a foreign ship firing straight at us," Gideon spoke. "We will take on critical damage if we don't do something."
"Gideon," Zari grumbled. "Straighten the ship ... please."
The two scrambled frantically for a handhold as the ship angled back. There was a muffled rumbling noise as the blasters below the cargo bay powered up on the side that was titling as the ship slowly levelled.
"Shall I alert the rest of the crew?" Gideon asked as the two straightened themselves.
"I don't think that's necessary," Nate grunted.
"Because they're going to be coming through the door," Zari continued.
The two began counting. "In three ... two ... one ..."
They pointed their index fingers at the sliding doors just as they opened. Sara stormed in followed by Nick, Ray, Amaya, Jax and Stein. Mick had his pet rat sitting on his shoulder, nibbling contently at a piece of fruit.
"What the hell, you two," Mick grunted. "You woke me from my nap. I hate getting woken up from my naps."
The two glanced over at Sara whose expression seemed to be determining what level of pain she was going to inflict on them. Instinctively, the two subtly moved a step back away from the blonde assassin.
"What. Did. You. Two. Do?" Sara glared at them.
"Nothing." The two shook their heads, raising their hands up in surrender. "We didn't touch anything."
"Sorry to interrupt, but I'm afraid that craft is heading straight for us. I am detecting several life-forms aboard, and if we do not act fast, I am afraid that we will sustain critical damage."
"Aliens?" Mick grumbled. "I don't like aliens except for Skirt."
"Everyone, suit up and be ready," Sara ordered before she turned to the two, her voice lowering in a threatening way. "We'll talk later."
Ray leaned over to the two. "You both do realise that means she is going to kick your asses right?"
Zari glared at him while Nate gulped. "Don't remind me."
Sara steered the Waverider forward until they were right on top of the enemy ship. They all strained their necks to look inside the cockpit, hoping to catch a glance of the alien pilot and the crewmates.
To their disappointment, the windows were tinted to prevent anyone from seeing inside. The Waverider flew forward silently until they were right next to the ship, but they still couldn't see inside since they were flying behind the blind side of the ship.
They all knew why Sara was taking such precaution. Despite being in stealth mode, the Waverider could easily be spotted if it brushed against anything. They also had no idea who they were dealing against.
But soon enough the enemy ship collided against the Waverider, sending it tumbling to the side. The Legends groaned painfully from the impact, holding onto the armchairs for their dear life as the enemy ship hovered beside them.
"I am detecting those same life-forms entering the Waverider," Gideon informed. "Six of them."
"How long till we get to earth?" Sara asked.
"Wait, what?" Nate stared at her in shock. "If we take them there, then more aliens might invade ... again."
"We have no choice," Sara replied, gritting her teeth. "We keep them busy here. Gideon, how long?"
"I calculate about two hours, Miss Lance," Gideon stated. "Would you wish for me to inform team Arrow, Flash and Supergirl about your sudden arrival?"
"Yes," Sara replied before grabbing her bo staff and turning to her team, who seemed ready and awaited her orders.
"Let's show these guys never to mess with the Legends."
They all shared a smirk before splitting apart. Nate and Ray went together as did Mick and Amaya, and Sara and Zari, while Jax and Stein fused into Firestorm before checking the back section of the ship.
Sara advanced forward towards the cargo section, clutching her staffs tightly behind her back with Zari tentatively following her, scanning the hallways anxiously for anything.
The two turned their heads around the edge of the wall and were startled to see a ... person?
The man, Zari had decided that he looked too human to be called an alien, had his back to them. He was wearing a maroon coat that went past his knees, and had wavy brownish-red hair. Sara somehow managed to sneak up behind him and gently pressed the end of her baton into the back of his neck.
"Either you turn around slowly, or I take your head off. And drop the ray guns hanging on your sides."
The man stiffened but did not turn around or obey what she had ordered. Instead, he very slowly began moving to grab his weapons.
"I said drop it," Sara hissed, abruptly reaching under his coat, yanking the guns from the belt, and tossing them to Zari, who fumbled with the guns for a moment before managing to grab them successfully.
"I wouldn't have done that if I were you," the man muttered, a magenta glow in his eyes.
Before Sara could reply, a blur of green lunged at her, allowing the man to turn his attention at Zari, staring at his guns in her hands. He advanced forward but Zari aimed his own weapon at him in defence.
The man was suddenly in front of her, trying to disarm her before holding her in a headlock. Zari managed to flip him roughly on the ground before hurling a powerful gust of air at him, sending him flying back against the wall.
She turned to Sara to see her engaged in a heated battle with the green-skinned female, who had that same weird magenta gleam in her eyes. Zari cast a glance back at the man to see him lying motionless before sprinting ahead, coming across Ray and Nate.
They were being chased by a walking tree and a raccoon.
A tree and a raccoon.
Honestly, Zari wasn't even that surprised. The Legends had seen many things but those two probably made it on top of their list, especially a talking one at that. She noticed that they all had the same magenta gleam in their eyes which confused her.
It appeared that they were in some sort of trance that they couldn't break through.
"I am Groot!" The walking tree yelled.
Zari blinked. "Did that tree just talk?"
"I AM GROOT!" The tree replied.
"I am Ray," Ray replied before staring at it excitedly. "This is so cool! A magical tree!"
"Ahh!" Nate cried out, trying to shake off the raccoon that was on his back, thankful that his body was made out of metal. "Get it off! Get it off!"
Zari hurled another gust of wind at the animal, throwing him off Nate's back, who thanked her with relief plastered across his face. But soon enough, the three were tangled in tree branches, restricting them from moving.
"Ew, ew!" Zari grumbled in disgust as the branches grew around her arms. "You still think this is cool?!"
"Yes!"
Before the three could do anything to escape, an antenna woman appeared in front of them, placing her hands around their temples, and before the three knew, their eyes drooped and fell in a peaceful sleep.
