39.2 Dinner from Hell
With a spell being on the door, Barbara had to open it with the password she lovingly made. "Open sesame damnit!" She said happily while she swished her wand rather violently.
As the door opened, Barbara couldn't help but have her signature smirk plastered on her face as she saw the couple take in the house. "Welcome to the Potter Household, Petunia and Vernon." Barbara said as politely as she could. But it was clear to Sirius how smug she was being.
"Good evening, Potter," Petunia replied, her horse-neck supporting her stuck-up head, "where should we place our coats?"
"There's a coat rack literally right next to you, Tuney..." Lily commented softly.
With pink beginning to tint Petunia's cheeks, she and Vernon mumbled something in unison under their breath and hung their coats. Why do they have coats on in the middle of the summer? I'll never understand stuck up muggles and wizards.
Barbara was beginning to regret inviting them over. She couldn't stand the awkward silences that overwhelmed the evening. The only rewarding parts of bringing Dursley over was to watch his growing mustache twitch angrily. He clearly didn't like it when people could one-up him; and the Potters were crushing him in between their teeth. Petunia was also getting annoyed, Barbara noticed, because she would always make a small sound and stick her head up higher. Her neck is eventually going to snap, between her big head and holding her head that high.
"Now that the tour is over, lets go outside and sit down for appetizers. Dippy so graciously put a bug-repelling charm around us; so we needn't worry about any." Barbara said to everyone. With a nod coming from Sirius and Lily, the Wizards led the way through the kitchen. Everything was going fine until Barbara heard a screech behind her.
"What is that?!" Petunia shrieked. Barbara swiveled around, thinking there was somebody not welcomed, until she saw the Muggle pointing at Dippy.
"That, is a he, first of all," Sirius growled lowly, "and secondly, his name is Dippy. Dippy, if you can leave the food now can you come over and say hi?"
The little house elf with big green eyes and respectable clothes voiced over happily. "Of course, Master Sirius!"
"Dippy, we've been over this," Barbara commented with a kind smile, "you don't have to call anybody anything but their first or last name. Petunia, Vernon, this is Dippy. Dip, care to tell the muggles what kind of creature you are?"
"Yes, Miss Barbara," he bowed slightly, a pink tint on his cheeks.
"Also, let's get Trixie before we begin. Trixie!" Barbara yelled, ignoring the baffled expressions of Vernon and Petunia. She was trying not to punch Lily's sister because of how rude she had been to Dippy.
Trixie bounded in with a smile on her face. "You called, Miss Barbara? What do you need?"
"I was just wondering if you could help Dippy explain what a House Elf is to the muggles. Would you?"
"Trixie would be happy to help Dippy!" She said gleefully. Trixie stood next to Dippy, who began to explain what they were to Petunia and Vernon. Though they tried to pretend they weren't interested, it was clear that they were. Barbara saw Lily smirking in the corner of her eyes.
Once they were done explaining, Dippy and Trixie bid their goodbyes and went back to work, also wanting to prove how the Potters were great people. Barbara and Lily had ranted to the House Elves before; so they knew what to expect. They remembered how the rude male Muggle treated Barbara when they first met, and didn't like people being mean to her. Barbara was nothing but kind to Dippy and Trixie, and they to her.
The Royal led everyone to the deck, which was decorated beautifully. The table itself was decorated with vines with flowers on them, obviously done by Trixie, who loves nature. The Fairies were more than delighted to move about the table for lighting, something Lily explained enthusiastically to her sister.
They made small talk throughout the dinner, and Dursley was getting worse and worse by the minute. At first, the muggles were nervous with trying even the simplest thing like the salad, afraid it would attack them. But they had obviously registered that they needed to eat something, as they were surrounded, and they both opted for the salad. Vernon continued on to the steak, eating Petunia's as well.
It was dessert, and Sirius brought out the final dish of the three-course meal: cauldron cakes. Barbara obtained the recipe to make the pumpkin pasties because the man who invented them and her parents were friends. She somehow convinced him to let her take the recipe when she was younger, and fell in love with them. She made sure to tell the guests that story, as Vernon kept talking about his stupid drill company.
It was easy for him to talk a lot about it because Barbara and Sirius had no idea what they were talking about. Lily had told them after the first time they met that drills weren't as important as Vernon made them out to be. When he was going on for the seventh minute about drills, Barbara finally said something.
"Yes, drills are clearly important, but are they more important than– um– windows?" She had to think quickly now that she was entering the battle zone: drills versus windows.
"Well, the drills make sure they can go into place, with the nails and screws." She shook off her confusion from what those meant to her and continued on with her point.
"But windows can easily be placed up with magic or tape. I would think that I could do well if magic was allowed to be seen by muggles-"
"No! That would be catastrophic!" Vernon shouted rather quickly. Barbara was stunned, so Sirius continued on Barbara's argument.
"What do you mean by that, Vernon?" Sirius said hotly. "Now that I think about it, what do you really think about us? Are you as fond of the Wizarding World as your girlfriend or her sister?"
His black beady eyes looked between the Wizards fearfully, refusing to answer the question Sirius posed. Petunia stood up abruptly.
"You know what? I think it's time for us to leave. Come on, darling."
Barbara stood up as well. "I'll see you two off. Sirius, Lily, please clean up the table." She noticed Lily's unshed tears and wanted to put her to work. Lily and Barbara exchanged a look, Lily thanking her and Barbara silently telling her that she wouldn't punch them on the way out.
They walked to the front door silently, Barbara clearly biting her tongue and the muggles furious with her.
"Goodbye, Potter." Vernon said while getting in his car.
"Bye." Petunia said curtly. She was about to turn and get into the car until Barbara said something.
"Petunia, you need to accept this world in order to understand your sister. Put your jealousy aside because you'll regret cutting Lily out."
The Evans sister paused, but ignored Barbara and climbed in the car. They drove away without a second glance.
Barbara would later learn that her prediction would be right.
