31. A New Mission
Once the trio reached Barbara's home, they were met with a confused, yet delighted, Potter family. Realization dawned on Barbara.
"Hey, Lily."
"Hmm?"
"You know you're going to be spending the next two weeks with James, too, right?"
That's when it hit her. Her eyes went wide; and she let out a frustrated sound. Barbara and Sirius laughed as James shrugged his shoulders innocently with his parents smiling knowingly behind him.
"Lily, don't worry, sweetheart. We'll make sure James isn't an 'arrogant toe-rag' for as long as we can." Lily turned a lighter shade of red
than Vernon had previously with Mrs. Potter's comment.
Suddenly they heard something explode in the kitchen. "Yikes! I forgot about the potion on the fire!"
"Fleamont you didn't!" Euphemia gasped. He rubbed the back of his head like his son did when he was in trouble.
"Like father like son, I guess." Barbara snorted at Sirius's comment.
Before Barbara could respond, there was a series of knocks at the door. Euphemia, with her wand grasped firmly in her hand, walked over to the door. "State your name and reasoning for being here!"
The older man's voice on the other side of the door made everybody relaxed after he spoke. "Albus Dumbledore; and I am here for Barbara."
Curious, Barbara watched Professor Dumbledore step in with a solemn expression. "Good evening, students."
"Evening, Professor." They said in almost perfect unison. The air of respect around Dumbledore was thick while he seemed to be exhausted.
"Dumbles, what's wrong?" Barbara questioned her mentor. She noticed that his age was showing, the wrinkles in his face more prominent than usual, and the absence of a twinkle in his eye.
James left his seat on the couch to sit next to his sister on the floor. Dumbledore thanked James and took his seat next to Lily on the end of the couch. Barbara laughed inwardly at Lily's face with sitting next to Sirius, who smirked at James in turn.
"I am sending you on your first mission, Miss Potter. And I'm warning you now that it will not be easy. Do you wish for everybody to know of it or shall we talk privately?"
"That depends, Sir," Barbara began cautiously, "why would I need to here is privately?"
Dumbledore sighed, which made Barbara frown. He never looked so beaten down before, which made her believe he was trying to send her as a distraction. Maybe he wants to worry about someone else rather than who is really on his mind. "It concerns the matter of another student at Hogwarts, someone who is in this room, in fact. I do not know if he or she should know the mission in case it frightens them."
"Professor, if this is about my family of crazies I'm entitled to know." Barbara's attention on Dumbledore moved to Sirius, who had a knowing look in his eyes.
"Then I shall say it in the open, Mr. Black," Dumbledore responded, "I am sending Miss Potter to arrest your father for endangering the welfare of a child, conspiring against the Ministry, and conspiring to kill the Minister himself. I'm sorry, Mr. Black."
Barbara's eyes widened almost as much as Sirius's. She watched as Sirius's breaths became nearly shallow. Before he could have a nervous breakdown, she got off from the floor and took his hand in hers. "I'm going to need to discuss it a little with Sirius, Professor. Give me five minutes."
She guided Sirius upstairs to her room, where she gently pushed him in the bed so he could sit down. Barbara took his hands in hers and, while ignoring her rapid heartbeat, spoke to him soothingly.
"Sirius, I've been training for a situation like this for almost two years. Every couple of weeks I've trained with Dumbledore or Angel, who helped me strengthen my Vampire capabilities. I've taken on notable Aurors and Vampires during the trial I had to do I border to become an Auror. I also took on Dumbledore. Granted, I didn't win when they were all together; but aren't the Lestranges in a different country? Won't Regulus and your mother go to tea with somebody or possibly be out?"
"Yes, but-"
"-But nothing, Sirius. You need to think about how much training I've done rather than the age gap. Anybody can be more skilled than anybody else as long as they've practiced enough."
"You haven't done this before! You could get killed by him!" She heard his voice crack at the end of the sentence.
"I promise you I won't. Would you feel more comfortable if you came with me to 'supervise' me? This will not be a one time thing, by the way."
Barbara noticed his shoulders relax as he nodded his head. She didn't know that Sirius was so scared of losing her at the hands of his father.
It only made her wonder what he did to Sirius.
Once the two made an appearance downstairs, Barbara relayed the plan to Dumbledore. At first, he was hesitant, asking Sirius a series of uncomfortable questions about his father. When Sirius answered vaguely but still made good points, Dumbledore gave his permission for the duo to go together.
Dumbledore eventually said goodbye and left to Hogwarts, thinking about his young pupils. There were many notable Gryffindors that he always kept on the back burner in his mind. He knew through letters that Gryffindor alumni were wondering what they could do to help fight for the good guys. And what he saw with the rising Gryffindors was that there were more who were clearly ready to join the fight. He had talked with te Potter twins on multiple occasions; and it was obvious that Barbara wasn't the only one who wanted to fight.
James was just as adamant as helping the good guys. Dumbledore noted that he supported his fellow players during Quidditch and had a good head on his shoulders. The only problem was that James allowed his arrogance to get in the way.
But he knew a certain ginger was going to change that.
