20. News to Sirius

Barbara's Second Year turned out to be her least favorite year yet. The reason she was looking forward to her Third Year, however, was the fact that she had permission from her parents to visit Hogsmede. She had visited there with the Marauders last year when she accidentally discovered a tunnel.

She was also looking forward to playing Quidditch with her team mates and new team members. While she was a Quidditch lover, her brother's love for the sport made it seem like she was okay. Barbara loved how he had enthusiasm but made sure his ego floated back down towards gravity during the summer.

Barbara helped James realize that he wasn't helping his case with trying to get Lily to like him back. So, Barbara decided to write about James in a better light to Lily instead of talking about the stupid fights they had over the summer.

Lily, in turn, wrote about how awful the first half of her summer was to Barbara. Petunia had been downright scary and Lily begged Barbara to come over for the summer. Unfortunately, Barbara couldn't, because as she aged closer toward her Fifth Year, her Vampire magic grew exponentially.

It was only a matter of time before Barbara became as powerful as Angel.

Valerie also took the summer to help Barbara fight against a werewolf attack if Remus ever turned on her in his wolf form. The rising Third Year now had official permission from Dumbledore to help Remus with his "furry problem," as James called it. Barbara, during July, spent the full moon with Remus and Angel, who was there to make sure all went according to plan. Luckily, Werewolf Remus knew he was in the presence of a Royal and was very tame around Barbara. This helped the Potters and Lupins accept that their children would be together during full moons henceforth.

Barbara hoped it would stay that way.

Barbara groaned as she walked into History of Magic, thankful that Lily was there to hex Sirius if he tried anything. The girls suspected the boys were set on annoying them into oblivion that year.

When she walked in, she immediately noticed another argument was breaking out between Lily and the two gang leaders of the Marauders, her brother and Sirius.

She decided to step in and help both sides as maturely as she could that morning.

"James stop arguing with your crush it's not like she's going to marry you!"

James and Lily both turned a bright red and glared at Barbara, who merely winked and took her seat next to Lily.

Someone tapped her shoulder, and she turned to see Sirius with his hand up. Barbara smiled and high-fived Sirius.

When Professor Binns glided into the room, the mood of the morning was crushed. Barbara was dozing off, dreaming about her bed in the Gryffindor dorms, James began dreaming about Quidditch, Sirius was poking James whenever he finally fell asleep and Lily was trying with all of her might to pay attention, but failed miserably.

Barbara only hoped the year would get better and her bed would become softer.

During lunch, Barbara decided to sit with Barty Crouch Jr. at the Hufflepuff table. She felt bad for not being a great friend during their Second Year because she was focused on making sure Lily and James didn't kill each other.

"Hey, Barty," Barbara greeted the lanky boy. She plopped down next to him and proceeded to munch on a nearby apple.

"Hi, Barb. Did you hear about what happened with Black?" He asked curiously. She shook her head in confusion.

"I heard his brother, Regulus, is supposed to be monitoring him and who he hangs out with. He's supposed to be like their parents' eyes and ears."

Barbara frowned. She knew of the Black family and their reputation; but she was aware that Sirius was the polar opposite of his family. If he had a little brother who had the mindset of "pure blood or dead," then that meant Sirius had to be really careful. Otherwise, he could end up seriously hurt if he had to leave during the holidays.

"I didn't hear about that, no," Barbara said slowly, "and I wouldn't spread it. Shouldn't believe everything you hear or spread other people's business, you know?" With that, she parted ways with Barty in order to find Sirius.

Plus, she didn't like the look Barty was talking to her. It seemed as though he was almost admiring the Black Family's reputation. As half witch and half Vampire, that ultimately made her decide to distance herself from Barty.

Little did she realize that their friendship was his only reason for being loyal to the light.

When she found the Marauders, Barbara made sure to get their attention. "Jamesie!" She yelled to the empty hallway.

Immediately, James turned his head to see Barbara smirking at him. "Never going to stop with that nickname?"

"No, it suits you and your stupid hair," she replied while ruffling her brother's hair. She was almost jealous with how soft it was compared to her own.

"What brings you over to our domain willingly? Here to tell me I'm the best brother in the world?"

"Again, no, you'll never guess the reason. I have to talk to you," Barbara said, pointing at Sirius, "in private. Care to take a walk?"

Sirius looked extremely confused because Barbara was speaking to him willingly and without him starting an argument between the two. Shrugging, and much to Barbara's relief, he didn't make any comments as they walked away from the rest of the Marauders.

"Now, what is it you desperately had to tell me privately? Are you declaring your love for me?" Sirius waggled his eyebrows.

"Ew. I'd rather kiss Snape."

Sirius held a hand to his heart. "Your insults usually sting, but this one takes the cake!"

"I'm here to warn you, Sirius." Barbara and Sirius took a seat on one of the benches, the hallway being desolate.

"Well that doesn't sound ominous at all. What's the threat?"

"Your brother-"

"-Regulus? Don't listen to a word that little psychopath says-"

"I'm not. It's about him. Barty heard a rumor that your family is using him to monitor who you're with."

Sirius chuckled, which surprised Barbara. "That doesn't surprise me. They pulled him off to the side before we apparated to the station last year. Don't worry about it. I've been dealing with those crazies for thirteen years now. Thanks for the concern, though. Now I know you somewhat love me."

Barbara was confused with how Sirius was taking this information. He wasn't angry or scared, he just laughed it off like it was nothing. "Sirius, like you said, your family is crazy-"

"-which means I've been dealt punishments you can't really wrap your head around, Barb. Don't worry about me."

He went to stand up but felt a hand grab his wrist. He sat back down and faced Barbara.

"Sirius," he was utterly confused with how Barbara was behaving at that moment, "I can imagine punishments you've dealt with. Trust me."

"I doubt it." How could a girl in such a great family know his tragedy?

"I... I was kidnapped, met my family and James three years before we came to Hogwarts. So just... just trust me. That's why I'm warning you about your brother, Sirius. You don't need to go through anymore."

Sirius was about to respond but Barbara walked away before he could utter an apology for assuming things.
