18. Second Year

It was a bittersweet moment for Barbara when she and James climbed onto the Hogwarts Express. She was excited to start her Second Year at her second home but wished she could bring Blazer to Hogwarts and see her parents more often during the school year. However, as soon as she saw Lily, her sad thoughts left her.

Barbara knew that Lily's summer was rougher than her best friend though it would be. Petunia and Lily's friendship went from deteriorating to nonexistent. The jealous sister decided to torment her little sister the whole summer by calling her a freak and words Lily refused to write to Barbara. Lily had written to Barbara telling her that Petunia shunned her when she wasn't calling the witch a freak. Barbara was thankful that Severus was able to comfort Lily during their summer. She may not like the boy; but she was thankful he was able o be there for her while he was out of the country.

When Barbara boarded the train with James, she parted ways with him as he left to find the other "Marauders" in one direction and she left to find Lily in another. It didn't take her long to find Lily, as she noticed Severus leave the compartment. Judging by his slight stamping, Barbara knew her friend and the boy just had a fight.

She stepped into the compartment to see that they were alone. As soon as Lily saw Barbara, she wiped the tears threatening to fall from her eyes away. "Hey, Barb," Lily said somewhat moodily, "how was you trip to New York City?"

"It can be put on hold for now, Lily. What just happened between you and Severus that made you tear up?" Barbara knew that Lily needed to get this off of her chest before they talked about their summers. Lily's needs were greater than hers in that moment.

"He was just insulting Tuney is all. I don't know why he thinks I hate her when I really don't." Barbara took a seat across from Lily, who had her head resting on top of her knees.

"Well," Barbara began, trying to word her thoughts carefully before she accidentally insulted Lily, "I think he just doesn't understand that love is more powerful than hate. Rumors are he has a broken home life; and you told me he wishes his parents will stop neglecting him. You grew up in a loving household and was able to develop love and appreciation for you family members, including your sister. He never had that opportunity so he just interprets in differently."

Lily's odd look made Barbara nervous, thinking that she said something that crossed the line. "Wow, that was pretty insightful, Barb. Ever thought of becoming a therapist?"

"A what?"

"A therapist. In the Muggle World," Lily explained, "people who need to talk about their problems and are looking for advice on how to solve them go to a therapist, who helps them cope with them. Do therapists not exist in the Wizarding World?"

"Not to my knowledge, no." Barbara replied. She and Lily's conversation ended soon after when Lily pulled out a book to read. With nothing to do, Barbara let her thoughts wander to Angel and how helpful she has been for her throughout the years.

Angel and Valerie helped Barbara adjust to being a Vampire as soon as they knew she existed. It had been easy for Barbara to adjust; but she couldn't imagine how she would've adapted to her Vampire powers if they weren't there to help her.

Barbara planned to tell Lily about how she was a Vampire at some point during the year, she just had to figure out how first. Remus was the only one (other than her brother) who knew of her secret. Dumbledore had allowed her to leave Hogwarts during certain weekends in order for to to practice flying with her wings. He also told her that, when she was a Third Year, he would consider allowing her to help Remus during his monthlies.

As a part of the Royals, Barbara could get through to Remus while he was a werewolf. It was common knowledge to all creatures and beings alike that the Royals were extremely powerful and were always the dominant ones in battle. Werewolf Remus wouldn't hurt Barbara because, however his mind wasn't his during the full moon, it still acknowledged her as the superior being. She couldn't wait to help her friend get through his full moons; so she secretly helped him at night; and she never told anybody that she helped Remus before Dumbledore allowed her to.

While her mind was on one of the members of the Marauders, Barbara thought of Peter. His aura hadn't improved since he first met him. Thus, she was usually polite to him when they were forced to be in the same room. Something about him screamed untrustworthy; and she knew to trust that instinct. Her sixth sense was heightened as a Royal to the point where it was just as prominent as her other five senses. She told James over the summer that Peter might not be the best to be around all the time. However, when she tried to explain why, he ignored her and called her sixth sense "bogus." Barbara, after a couple more hours of arguing with her stubborn brother, told him that she was not to be blames if something bad happened in his group because she tried to warn him.

James, as a response, said that she and Lily were definitely on their radar for pranking during their Second Year, which merely made Barbara respond by tripping him while they were walking through Central Park. She knew his threat was empty because she had been pranking him and the other Marauders last year during her free time; so they knew what she was capable of and even Sirius didn't want to be completely on her bad side. However, she knew her pranks would be limited every year because of the amount of homework she was going to receive.

Her final grades for her First Year made her parents have high expectations for her Second Year. Both she and James were told that they would get the latest, best broom model if their grades remained the same or improved. Both she and James made their father proud when he saw that they both had "Outstanding" for Potions. Fleamont was even happier to learn that they were both asked to be a part of the "Slug Club," a club their professor created to celebrate his brightest students. Fleamont was sad to learn that neither of his kids joined it because it was useless.

She and James had assured their parents that their Second Year would turn out to be okay, even though they both weren't in the Slug Club. The Potter twins both were going to try out as Chasers for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. They were both well known enough to be considered and Barbara knew James was good enough to become a Chaser. Her skill and popularity with the Third Years would definitely work in her favor, even if she didn't want to be judged based off of her popularity. She promised herself that if there was another Chaser better than her who did't make it, she would quit the team and let the Gryffindor take her place. Not only was it the right thing to do, but it would help her team win the House Cup.

Because many of the Second Years and other Hogwarts students knew of the Marauders, Barbara's wish to be unnoticed failed miserably as the new school year began to proceed. Girls left and right were making her about how to win over her brother or Sirius while all she wanted to do was have her popularity help her win over Gilderoy Lockhart, a Fourth Year Ravenclaw.

She had began to become close to him when Sprout assigned Lockhart to a project in Herbology the young Gryffindor took an interest in. He had proven himself to be a true gentleman and was always making sure they were on the same page when they did their homework together in the library. Barbara also admired his capability of producing flawless charms when they practiced the incantations. James knew of her crush on Gilderoy and made sure he teased her at least twice a day for it. Barbara was fine with him teasing her; but with Sirius Black it was a whole other story.

Sirius had definitely had it out for her ever since she rejected him the previous year. Barbara, no matter how many times she hexed him, was unable to deter Sirius. He constantly annoyed her and constantly teased her about her crush. Of course, he wasn't mean enough to tell Gilderoy about her little crush; but that didn't mean he kept it well hidden when he saw Barbara and the Ravenclaw together. Barbara was thankful Gilderoy was oblivious.

She just hoped that he wasn't purposefully ignoring that side of their friendship.
