15. First Day

James woke up to a push off his bed, laughter followed suit. He grumbled under his breath when he realized that it wasn't his sister who pushed him, but his new friend.

"Sirius, first thing you ought to know about me is that I don't appreciate that," James mumbled, trying to bury under the covers he took off the bed with him.

"James why would you think I'm Sirius? I mean don't you know your own sister?" The voice said, mock hurt. His eyes opened slightly when he heard his sister's voice, silently commending himself with his first guess as to who the culprit was.

"Barbara, you did that!?" James said. His eyes immediately opened to the sight of his sister, who was stepping on his covers on purpose, next to him. She was dressed, and smelled of vanilla. Her hair was in ringlets, and looked like they were done professionally.

"James... why's your sister in here? She isn't welcome into our dorms," said a sleepy voice belonging to none other than Sirius Black, who was just waking up due to the commotion.

"I'm welcome in here whether you like it or not. If you must know, I want to talk to my brother, alone," Barbara replied, sounding annoyed with Sirius.

"Look, sweet cheeks, if we aren't allowed in your dorm, than you aren't allowed in ours, understand?" Sirius retorted, and smiled cheekily at her.

Barbara started laughing, and then replied, "Look, doll face, don't say I'm not allowed to visit my brother or else you'll receive a trip to the hospital wing." She, just as cheekily, blew a kiss and winked at Sirius, before going to the Great Hall, not bothering to wait for her brother.

"James, your sister is pretty annoying," Sirius muttered, irritated with how he was sassed by a girl.

"Don't do anything you'll regret, Sirius. She's my sister, and she's been my little sister for the past three years. Don't do anything to upset her or you'll have to hear from me." James threatened casually, and went to change for his first day.

"Sirius, why'd he say three years, aren't they twins?" Remus asked as he came out of the bathroom, already dressed.

"I was just wondering that," Sirius replied, eyeing James suspiciously as he walked out of the bathroom after a quick shower.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" James asked, confusedly.

"Why did you say the past three years? Yore supposed to be twins!" Remus said. He had a theory in his mind; but he didn't like it and hoped it was something different.

"Um... that isn't my secret to tell," James said quietly, "but the only thing you should know is to not even put a finger on her back." Sirius and Remus watched James curiously as he practically ran out of the dorms.

Peter finally emerged from the bathroom. He looked confused as Sirius and Remus mirrored their expression. "Well, should we go down, boys?" Peter asked the group. They nodded their heads and walked to the Great Hall.

All of the First Year Gyffindors had their classes together with another House. Barbara thought it was nice that the Houses had a chance to mingle and decided to sit next to a Hufflepuff. "Hello, my name's Barbara Potter. And you are-"

"I'm Bartemius Crouch Junior. Call me Barty, Barb," the young Hufflepuff smiled and shook Barbara's hand.

Barbara spent the rest of her time before class talking to Barty Crouch Junior. Barbara didn't mind the nickname given to her by him; and she found it amusing how similar their names were. She learned a great deal about the boy's personal life, such as his father was basically absent from his life because of how in love he was with his job. Barbara pitied Barty because he was obviously bitter about how his father chose work over him, thus leaving the young boy bitter.

Barbara only hoped he and his father could form a relationship in which both parties could be happy.

As soon as Profesor McGonagall walked into the room, the students fell silent. Barty and Barbara broke off their conversation as the profesor motioned everybody to look at the book resting on a stool. Barbara was surprised she didn't notice it before but figured she ignored it because of her conversation with her new friend.

Without a word, Profesor McGonagall changed the book into a cat with a tap from her wand. Barbara and other students were in utter shock. I'll be able to do that... wicked!

"Hello, students. My name is Profesor McGonagall and I am your Transfiguration teacher and the Head of the Gryffindor House. Before Christmas break, plan on taking many notes and doing little spells," she allowed the students to groan whilst she rolled her eyes, "after the break, however, we will be focusing on gradually making sure you're able to complete all spells needed to pass the First Years' exams.

"Now, take out your quills and parchment, we will begin by taking notes explaining the definition and the art of transfiguring another object. I implore you to take detailed notes as this will be your first test in due time."

Barbara smiled as she saw her brother bang his head on the desk a few rows ahead of her. Her smile grew as Sirius wouldn't allow James to move his head from the position it landed.

After eating lunch in the Great Hall with Remus and Peter, Barbara made her way to the library in order to get ahead on her homework. She was happy that, as a First Year, she didn't have too much homework; but her parents warned her and James that the homework load would become a lot heavier. She wanted to make sure she was in the habit of completing her homework in a timely fashion.

In other words, she wanted to be the complete opposite of her twin when it came to homework.

Barbara chose a seat next to Severus Snape in the library. "Hello, Severus," she said politely.

"Go away, blood-traitor," Severus mumbled every so casually under his breath. However, due to Barbara's impeccable hearing (thanks to her Vampire genes), she immediately felt betrayed. Barbara had been polite towards Severus and never once allowed James to talk about the Slytherin behind his back.

"Don't mind if I do, then," Barbara muttered bitterly. She quickly gathered her things and left Snape with his lonesome self.

It was her first taste of rejection from a friendship; and she knew it was bound to happen. Barbara just didn't expect it on her first day of classes from a boy she had been trying to tolerate and keep away from her brother.

I can't be friends with everybody, she thought to herself, or else I would have nobody to make friends with later on.
