Chapter 48
Harmony's Pov
I woke up to the bright light of the sun shining through the curtainless window. I turned onto my other side to avoid the brightness of the morning sun trying to sneak into my room. I winced when I suddenly felt a sharp pain throughout my upper body. My eyebrows furrowed in confusion, maybe I slept the wrong way? No, I don't think that would do it. I opened my eyes to take a look around at my surroundings, noticing that I was in a hospital room. I tried to rack my brain as to why I was here until the events of last night started to flood into my mind.
I remember the crash and the fact that Fletcher had cowardly escaped the car without helping me or even attempting to call emergency services. As much as I'd like to blame him for the incident, it was my fault for getting into the car with him in the first place when I should have just stayed at the house where it would have been safer. But I guess now I have to live with my decision and move on though it doesn't mean I'm not the slightest bit resentful towards Fletcher for leaving me. I just don't know who was the one that actually saved me.
"How are you feeling honey?" I heard. I turned towards the voice to see my mother standing at the side of my bed with a worried frown.
"I feel alright" I replied with a shrug. She sighed and sat at the edge of the bed before pulling me into her arms. I instantly wrapped my arms around her, my cruddy mood forgotten.
"You gave me quite a scare last night when I heard what happened" she mumbled into my hair.
"I'm sorry" I apologised, my voice coming out small.
"Don't apologise, I'm just glad you're alright, I don't know what I would have done if something were to happen to you" she muttered, her arms tightening around me protectively.
We stayed like this for a couple of minutes in silence until my grandmother walked in. Her face instantly lit up. She went to hug me after my mother let go of me. I could tell they were both trying to be careful while hugging me, to avoid pressing on any of my injuries. I hadn't gotten a good look at myself yet, I'm scared to because I may not like what I see. I chuckled and hugged back, ignoring my thoughts for now. When she let go of me, she informed me about Daniel and how he was the one that brought me here.
She let me know about the car combusting just after he pulled me out. My eyes widened at the new information. I couldn't have been more thankful that Daniel found me and rescued me on time when he did. I knew he would. He's always there for me when I need him the most. It feels like I'm always drawn to events that put me in troubling situations. It's not even intentional that I find myself in those sorts of occurrences. It's like I put Daniel in these situations with me and there's always a possibility that he could get hurt. I could feel the guilt inside me. I should talk to him and thank him but also make sure he's alright since I was also told of how he seemed stressed and upset.
Our conversation was cut short when we heard a knock at the door. My mother smiled at me while my grandmother stood up. "That should be Daniel, we'll leave you two alone while we go get something for you to eat," she said before they both exited the room, giving a nod to Daniel. When he entered, I noticed how dishevelled his hair was. He looked like he barely got any sleep at all. He closed the door and was at my side in an instant, embracing me in his arms. I was taken aback at first but wrapped my arms around him in return.
"Are you ok?" I asked with a frown. He nodded into the crook of my neck.
"I am now that you're alright and in my arms, awake again" he replied. It was sweet of him to say but my worries didn't disappear.
"Did you sleep at all last night?" I questioned.
"Yeah" Daniel yawned. "Just a couple of hours" he added. I pulled away from him but kept my hands on his shoulders.
"Be honest with me, are you really alright?" I pleaded, looking into his eyes.
"I'm fine, I'm more worried about you, you shouldn't be worried about me, you're the one that just woke up from being in an accident," he said. I smiled and kissed his cheek.
"I think you've worried too much about me but I did want to say thank you, I know that you pulled me out of the car, I'm glad that you were there, that you saved me yet again" I expressed.
"I'm always going to be there for you, the promise ring signifies that" he stated, confidently.
"And I'll always be there for you" I declared.
Daniel grinned and pecked my lips. Soon my mother and grandmother returned with some food for us. I was relieved since I was starving and I'm not so keen to eat hospital food. Daniel ended staying with us until after lunch when he had to abruptly leave. He looked to be in a hurry. I didn't know whether to be concerned about where he could be going or not. I trusted him but if he was emotional then I didn't want him to be alone, I wanted him to confide in me. I felt like he was hiding something from me, I just don't know what.
I was distracted the whole day, even with Ruby and Kylee when they visited after lunch. That doesn't mean I didn't notice that Evelyn hadn't bothered to visit today or even call. I was told by Kylee that Evelyn didn't even go straight home, she went with Keith back to his. I didn't want to believe that she didn't care but that's what it felt like. I'm glad to have met Ruby and Kylee and have them as my friends. Ivy, Ace, Lukas, Thomas, and his whole band piled into my room towards night time with flowers, balloons and chocolates. I was overwhelmed by the amount of care I was getting from everyone.
When visiting hours were over, the others were told to leave but I had to, unfortunately, stay until tomorrow. I didn't want to stay the night in a hospital alone. My mother and grandmother offered to stay with me but I'm not about to make them sleep on the uncomfortable chairs, they deserve proper sleep after barely getting any last night. My mother was supposed to go back to work this coming week but decided to take the week off to look after me.
Whereas my grandmother was supposed to be going to go back home on Saturday but she decided to stay longer because of whats happened. We decided to leave it for a Friday when we can drive her up to her house and stay for the weekend. The nurse soon came to let me know it was lights out and that I should get some sleep. I just pretended that I was but truth was, I couldn't fall asleep. I've never been good with hospitals, their cold and lonely. I wish I had asked Ruby and Kylee to stay over but then again, I'd just feel guilty because I'd be asking for too much.
I sighed as I stared at the window, the clouds blocking the usual beautiful night sky that I loved watching. I should have asked for my sketchbook so I could have at least drawn rather than lying in bed with my mind racing with random thoughts keeping me awake. I huffed, sitting up and swinging my legs over the bed. That was when I noticed a folded note left on one of the chairs put in my room. I scrunched my eyebrows together in confusion before unfolding it. The frown on my face deepened at what was written.
I need your help
I jumped, almost letting out a yelp in surprise when I heard a knock at my window. I spun around, dropping the note on the floor, to see Thomas there with a wide toothy grin. I quickly rushed over to open it for him, letting him crawl in and fall onto the floor. "What the hell are you doing here? It's almost midnight" I hissed in a whisper. My eyes darted towards the door, hoping that no one heard the noise that Thomas made when he fell in.
"Did you not read the note? I need your help" Thomas replied.
"I know but why now? Why so late at night? And why me?" I questioned.
"Because this isn't about me, it's about Daniel."
When he said that, I went rigged, thinking of the worse scenario. I'd hate myself if something were to happen to him. "Spill" I ordered.
"Daniel has been competing in underground fights for a year now" Thomas explained. My eyes widened and I let out a small gasp, taken aback by the new revelation. I shouldn't be surprised that he's been fighting but he promised to try and stop. I'm more shocked that he's doing it illegally and that he was even doing it at all. He's been hurt before but now I know it wasn't from the fights he was in at school, it was from underground fighting. They could have done much worse than give him just a few bruises and a scratch on the lip. "And now I know he's going to kill me for telling you" he muttered once he noticed my shocked expression. He cursed under his breath.
"It'll be stupid of him to get angry over telling me, now continue" I demanded, crossing my arms. Thomas sighed, raking a hand through his hair.
"He quit after you two started dating but this was after Ace's party back in November before your 'fight'" he continued, using air quotes. I inwardly cringed at the mention of our fight. I was so stupid to let Sylvia trick me that day. I was just glad we got through it. I waited for Thomas to continue further with his explanation, hoping he'd hurry because all I knew was that Daniel was in trouble and needed help. I wanted to get to him as soon as I can.
"Today he received a message to do one last fight and he's going now to fight off a guy nicknamed Hammerhead, he's the best of the best and could easily beat anyone he fights, I know for a fact since I've seen him fight, his opponents end up in the hospital, almost killed" he explained. And now my worry is at an all-time high. Why would he accept this challenge to fight some crazy guy? It sounds like he's unbeatable.
"And now you want me to stop him from fighting this guy because he could possibly get beat up to a pulp?" I finished off. He nodded in response. "Well then what are we waiting for? Take me to him" I stated with urgency and determination.
"Wait, might want to change into a pair of spare clothes I got," Thomas said, putting his hand out to stop me. I raised a brow in suspicion as to where he would get any spare girls clothes. "Ruby kind of knows I'm here so she gave me some of her clothes for you to wear," he said with a sheepish expression.
I waited as Thomas quickly grabbed the spare clothes from the trunk of his car. I changed in the bathroom into a pair of dark green shorts and a black Champion hoodie. I then followed Thomas out the window. I'm sure none of the nurses will notice that I've gone missing for a couple of hours. I got into Thomas' car and he sped off to where Daniel was going to be fighting. I bit my bottom lip in anticipation, hoping that we'd get there in time before the fight would begin. Something must have made him accept tonight's fight if he stopped when we first got together. Now I know why he left so abruptly and so early. That must have been when he got the message because it was after he took a glance at his phone.
When we got to what looked like a rundown abandoned warehouse, I recognised Daniel's truck instantly. I exited the car as soon as Thomas stopped the car. I didn't wait for him as I ran inside, stopping in my tracks at the large amount of people crowding around the boxing ring that stood in the middle of the room. There was only one overhead light above the ring that dimly lit the area. People were violently pushing and shoving while shouting cheers for the guy standing in the ring. I could hear the name so clearly, the guy with the weird nickname, the one that Daniel was supposed to fight.
He looked like he worked out 24/7 with a muscular body. He was standing over a beat-up, bloody guy who looked like he was barely breathing. He looked proud and smug over almost killing the guy. My stomach churned at the sight. If he could do that to his opponent, I can't imagine what he would do to Daniel in that ring. I could feel my heart race. I wanted to find where he was but the crowd kept pushing me back, preventing me from even going through them to the ring. It frustrated me.
"Harmony! You can't just run in like that! Daniel would kill me if anything were to happen to you" Thomas scolded when he caught up to me. He looked around at the few men eyeing me, some giving me sideways glances. Nearly everyone here was male except for the few tattooed females that looked intimidating. He lifted my hoodie to cover me.
"Can you please take me to him? I need to find him now before he goes up against that guy" I pleaded urgently. Thomas looked around again before sighing.
"Hold onto me while I lead you to him" he ordered.
I nodded before he turned around. I held onto his shoulder as I followed close behind him through the crowd as he shoved them aside. I felt relieved when I saw Daniel sitting at a bench by the ring, using a hand wrap to protect his hands. He was getting ready to go up. I was about to run over but the presenter had already announced his name. Daniel climbed into the ring before we could stop him. The cheers were so loud after the bell rang, signalling them to start the fight. I flinched when I saw Daniel try to throw a punch but the guy dodged it and threw a jab at him back. Daniel stumbled at the impact. I could see blood start to drip from his mouth. I ran over to the presenter before things could escalate.
"Stop the fight now!" I demanded. He raised one eyebrow with a smirk.
"Sorry lady, the fight has begun, I can't stop it just because you're crying over it" he jested. I growled, clenching my fists. Before I could shout at him, I was pulled back by Thomas.
"Shouting at the presenter won't do shit Harmony, the bastard cares about the money more than the players" he explained. I huffed in annoyance. My head turned towards the ring when I heard a groan in pain. I gasped when I saw Daniel on the floor, trying to push the guy's foot off his ribs. He was putting immense pressure but Daniel was trying to push as much of his weight off him to prevent the guy from crushing him. Daniel glanced over in my direction and his eyes widened before they narrowed towards Thomas standing next to me. "Shit, he knows" Thomas whispered to himself.
I wasn't paying attention to Thomas since Daniel had gotten distracted. The guy took the opportunity to push him down, making him flinch at the impact put on his torso. He was then pulled up by his neck before the guy threw a couple more punches at him while he was vulnerable. The cheers coming from the crowd was deafening. "That's it, I can't watch this anymore" I mumbled to myself.
Thomas called out my name when I ran to the ring and climbed in. Daniel shook his head at me, trying to yell at me to get away but every time he tried to get a word out, he got punched. I grabbed the wooden chair in the corner of the room. I ignored the shot of pain through my arms, especially through my shoulder that I knew was stitched up. I prayed that it didn't open up. I didn't pause to think about my next action despite that before I smashed the chair over the guys head. The crowd quietened as the guy turned towards me, not seeming fazed at all by the impact. I took a step back in fear when he took a threatening step towards me with his fists clenched. I probably should have thought about the consequences of my actions.
"Leave her out of this, this fight is between me and you, not her" Daniel growled. He was in front of me in an instant, protecting me from the muscular guy. his name was too stupid to say, it's just going to make me laugh in such a serious situation.
"She hit me over the head with the chair, she's going to pay" the guy snarled, his nostrils flaring.
"And I said leave her out of this, you'll regret it" Daniel scowled.
"Fine, I'll hurt you first then her," he said, pointing at Daniel then at me. I looked towards the broken chair leg. I quickly grabbed it, going around Daniel to hit the guy again with it but this time below the chest. He doubled over in pain before growling at me. Daniel pulled me back, glaring at me but I could see the worry in his eyes.
"Harmony, you need to stop, you're already injured," Daniel scolded.
"I'm not going to let him hurt you even more than he already did" I retorted stubbornly. He went to argue further but he glanced over my shoulder and pushed me to the side. It resulted in him getting kicked. Daniel fell to the floor, trying not to show any more pain. I ran over to stand in front of him before he could get kicked more. "Leave him the fuck alone!" I yelled as menacing as I could. He looked at me as if I were a joke. He then burst out laughing, hunching over to hold his stomach, acting as if this was the funniest thing in the world. I took this opportunity to kick him between the legs. I watched as he fell to his knees while howling in pain and cupping the spot I hit. "Ring the bell and end this already!" I shouted at the presenter.
His eyes were wide before he scrambled to climb into the ring. The bell rang, finally ending the match. The crowd was cheering while I was taking deep breaths. The presenter tried to announce us as the winner and grab my arm but I shot him a glare making him take a step back. I rushed over to Daniel to help him sit up. I cupped his face to check over his injuries. "How much pain are you in?" I asked softly. He caught both my wrists.
"I'm fine, I'm not in much pain, I've handled worse," he replied. That wasn't helping with reassuring me.
"We need to get you to the hospital" I stated.
"I can't, they'd get suspicious plus I can still function alright" Daniel refused. He tried to prove it by standing up but I could tell he struggled, wincing. I hate to admit that he was right but he needs to be checked up on. I got up from my crouching position. My body felt tired and a little sore from how much movement since I had ignored the slight pain in my upper body and head. I wasn't thinking much but I don't regret my actions. I'm fine, I'm not in much pain as Daniel must be now. I could still move.
"You need medical help Daniel," I stressed, frowning.
"I can treat myself, it'll be fine" he brushed my words off. I huffed in annoyance. There was no way of arguing with him, he was too stubborn. I followed after him with the thought that I would have to treat his wounds. He's lucky I love him.
