Chapter 33

My eyes flicked open, instantly feeling my sticky body between my blankets and the throbbing pain in my head. I kicked my sheets off of me, trying to cool myself down as I put my palm to my forehead. As a cause of stress that was most likely formed by school, I'd been waking up with migraines in the middle of the night and this one had been a bit worse than the others.

I shut my eyes as I gripped onto my blankets, deciding to get up and take a cool shower despite my clock telling me it was almost 4am. I rubbed my hands over me face as I wearily walked to my bathroom. I flipped the light on and squinted my eyes from the sudden brightness and shielded my eyes with my hand.

I leaned over into my shower, turning it on and searching around for towels. With my luck, I had none. I groaned from the annoyance and headed back out of my room and towards my laundry room. I quickly slipped back into my room and into my shower with hopes that my headache would go away with a short shower.

My body felt heavy as the water hit against my once sweaty body. I brushed out my tangled hair with my fingers and kept running my face under the cool water. I felt better, but the pounding in my head was still there.

I stepped out after about 15 minutes, letting my thick cotton towel hang loosely around me. I dug around in my drawers for my medication, but stopped once I heard a banging on the side of my wall. My head darted in the direction of the broken silence and I swallowed the pill I had in my hand with a raised eyebrow.

The bang was heard again and I realized it was from Luke's room. I secured the towel tighter around my body and left my bathroom with my hair still dripping down my back. I quietly walked towards his room and raised my hand to knock, but stopped when I heard another loud noise from inside his room. I shook my head and knocked on his door, not getting an answer after a few moments.

"Luke?" I called out, clearing my throat after from my tired voice. I heard shuffling in his room and was tempted to just walk right in, but God only knows what he does at this time of the morning.

The door swung open to reveal a very disgruntled Luke. His dissatisfied expression faded as he caught onto what I was wearing, or that I was barely wearing.

"You're naked." He blurted out, raising his eyebrows at me.

"Are you complaining?" I asked and he quickly shook his head. I pushed open his door and saw nothing out of the ordinary in his room which left me confused as to what he was doing. "And what the hell are you doing?" I looked back at him, catching onto his tired eyes that resembled mine.

"That was my bed hitting the wall." He explained which still left me with no answer.

"From?"

"Oh," He started, raising his voice a little. "I dropped something behind my bed and I couldn't squeeze my arm through the side of my bed and I was-"

"Why are you awake?" I questioned, cutting him off. He looked me up and down and crossed his arms over his chest.

"I could ask the same," He replied.

I nodded my head, "You first."

"My room, my rules." He told me. I narrowed my eyes at him then took a step back from his door.

"Let me go put on some clothes." I sighed.

"Wait," He stopped me just as I turned to walk to my room. He searched rather frantically around for something, running out of my sight before coming back a few moments later with his clothes in hand. "Wear mine." He insisted, giving me a gentle smile.

"My room is literally 10 feet away." I chuckled, motioning to my bedroom door.

"Please?" He stuck out his bottom lip at me which was still an acceptable way to try to get me to do what he wants. He stuck out the handful of clothes to me. "Let me be a cute boyfriend." He gave me a cheesy smile and opened his door a little wider, gesturing me to come into his room.

I easily obliged, grabbing the handful of clothes and heading into his bathroom to change clothes. I tugged the clothes over my just dried body and shook my head at his towel and clothing covered bathroom floor.

"You didn't give me any real pants." I said as I exited his bathroom and walked out in a pair of his boxers.

"You were hot." He shrugged. It took me a second to realize that he wasn't actually calling me hot and that he was referring to me waking up sweaty and feeling like I was on fire.

"How'd you know that?" I furrowed my eyebrows at him, remembering back to a day at the library when he tested me on how much better he knew me than I knew myself.

"You always take a shower when you get migraines in the middle of the night." He easily said, sitting down on his bed. I nodded my slowly and crossed my arms, walking towards him.

"Thanks." I gave him a half smile which he easily returned, rubbing his eyes right after. I grabbed the swivel chair from his desk and sat down right in front of him. "So you knew what I was up for, why are you up so late? Or early, I should say." I rested my elbows on his knees, looking up at him with a set stare.

He glanced at me once then leaned back onto his hands that rested behind him.

"I don't know." He sighed, which only made it clear that he knew exactly why he was awake. I squeeze his legs once, getting his attention.

"You haven't been sleeping since we've moved into this place." I quietly said, catching his attention. He said nothing, which wasn't getting me anywhere. "You don't think this place is haunted, do you?" I asked which he gave a short laugh at.

"No," He said. "I just like being awake at night I guess." He shrugged. I leaned back into my chair, hugging my knees to my chest as he explained further on. "It's quiet and I like doing things on my own and I don't know." He fell all the way back onto his bed, running a single hand through his messy hair.

"I'm just a little worried." I told him, pressing my fingertips to the side of my head.

"Is your migraine okay?" He suddenly asked and popped his head up, making me nod a few times. He sighed and sat up on his elbows, his eyes trailing over me as if he was trying to plaster my current position into his mind. I shook out my still wet hair from the feeling that I probably looked rough and sat in the comforting silence between us.

"I do a lot of thinking," He spoke up, catching my attention. "When I'm up at night, I mean." He added. He waved me over next to him and I instantly obliged, crawling over his bed and sitting my his side.

I sat hip to hip with him except I was facing him and had my legs crossed while he hadn't moved from his outstretched position as he rested on his elbows. He lifted one of his hands as I settled next to him, running it over my knee as delicately as he could.

"I think about school and how annoying it is." He started, getting both of us to laugh from how often we talked about this. "And I think about home, because I miss it and all." I nodded my head in agreement as I thought about the last time we were on break which was practically two months ago.

"Even Effy?" I asked. He rubbed his eyes again as he laughed at the memory of when Effy practically ratted me and Luke out.

"Even Effy." He assured. His finger tips kept tracing light paths on my legs, distracting me from the pain in my head. I bit at my bottom lip as he continued.

"And for the longest time I thought about whether or not I should make a move on you, that was hell." He laughed as well as I did, the idea of actually being together with Luke really hitting me.

"Luke, we're in a relationship." I breathed out, signaling between us as we kept on smiling.

"We are. It's nice you caught on, Primrose." He laughed. I shoved him once and he grabbed a hold of my hand, immediately pulling me onto him. "And it only took me from June to December to actually get you to like me."

"Hey, I liked you before then!" He giggled as he peppered my face with kisses. "Remember that one movie night before all of this happened and you were like 'Hey Autumn isn't it weird that we haven't kissed?' and then you kept brushing your lips against my jaw?" I asked, remembering the night probably too clearly.

"Yeah, I did that on purpose." He admitted, laughing more at me than the story. "I was actually going to kiss you, but I chickened out and got scared that you might punch me since you were dating Ellis at the time." He explained.

My smile fell, "I probably wouldn't have." I said.

"You wouldn't?" He raised an eyebrow at me as I fell to the side, scooting back up so I rest my head on his shoulder.

I shook my head, "I didn't mind the first time you kissed me." I told him.

"I thought you were so mad at me." He let out a breathy laugh, causing a smile to pull at the corner of my mouth.

"I was really confused." I said, peering up at him, meeting his eyes. "But I still enjoyed it." I assured him, patting his chest to get my point across.

He rolled his eyes at my statement while still being able to hold his smile. I caught myself practically admiring him, glancing away with a twist in my stomach. Even after everything we've managed to go through, every inch of him still seemed to amaze me.

I cuddled up to him, taking notice in how it was usually Luke who was clinging to my side instead of me. We sat in another silence, the only things keeping me awake were his steady heartbeat against my ear and the corner lamp giving his room light. His fingers would every so often brush through the ends of my hair then trail down the rest of my back which was putting me back to sleep.

"I think about you a lot." Luke softly said, stopping me from dosing off. He continued playing with the strands of my hair and running his finger tips down my spine. "As in, I'm awake at night because I can't believe that this is my life." I heard a small laugh leave his lips and I tilted my head to look up at him.

"What do you mean?" I asked, understanding that I was the reason for his sleepless nights, but I didn't understand why he saw his current position in life as something extravagant.

He leaned over to me and left a lingering kiss on my lips, "Goodnight, Autumn." He said, pulling me closer as we tried to get some sleep, this time me being the one awake with too much to think about.

I riffled through the mail in my hands, keeping my phone pressed to my ear with my shoulder as I was attempting to talk to my mom. We never got much since my parents paid for most of the place and we tried our best to keep unnecessary magazines and letters out of the mail also. What had caught my eye this time was a cream colored envelope with my name neatly written on the front of it.

I listened to my mom babble on about life back at home without me and how quiet it was with just Effy. I said 'mhmn' every so often just to make it seem like I was paying attention, but it was hard after half an hour.

I slipped my finger under the cream paper, tearing it open with ease. I furrowed my eyebrows as I pulled out a white card that was announcing a wedding. I scanned over the typed writing, getting a surprise about who it was.

"Mom, since when is Travis getting married?" I stopped her words with mine, looking around my apartment for Luke to see if he knew anything about this. I read over the card once more. "When did he even propose?" I asked as my confusion continued.

"I asked the same thing." She sighed. "He told me it was a couple months back and he genuinely forgot to tell us." She told me as I walked into my room to find Luke already sitting on my bed.

"'Oh, surprise, I'm getting married.'" I mocked Travis' voice terribly and shook my head at how idiotic he could be sometimes. I read over the wedding invitation once more to see that it was in two weeks.

"I guess I'll see you in two weeks." I huffed into the speaker and quickly said goodbye to my mom, throwing myself onto my bed next to Luke.

I peered up at him as he raised an eyebrow at me.

"Why are you in my room?" I questioned, getting him to roll his eyes at me.

"Because you left mine," He replied "And who's getting married?" He turned around on my bed to face me as I sat up on my elbows.

"Travis." I answered which obviously shocked Luke.

"Your brother Travis?" He asked. I nodded my head slowly, looking down to me feet that were still dangling off the bed. "During his last year of college?" His hand reached out for mine and he pulled me up from my back, getting me to sit next to him.

"I mean, it's their decision. I'm happy for them." I gave him a small smile and lightly squeezed his hand. "I can't believe my brother is getting married." I shook my head as I laughed, remembering how my mom always thought I would be the first to get married.

"Well when you go, tell Travis and the newly wed congrats." Luke smiled, nudging my shoulder.

"When I go?" I raised an eyebrow at him. "You're coming with me." I laughed.

His lips formed an 'O' as he glanced down to the ground. He let go of my hand and let his face fall into his hands, lightly groaning.

"That means I have to dress nice." His voice was muffled, but still able to make out and I rolled my eyes at his comment.

"That's what you're worried about?" I asked. He popped his head up and glared at me, getting off his bed and standing up.

"At least I get to dance with you." He said, stretching his arms over his head.

"I'm not dancing." I laughed as I shook my head.

"Of course you are." He smirked, holding out his hand to me.

"Luke," I began, but never actually ended since he pulled me off of the bed, my hand in his.

"It's easy," He told me as we now stood in the middle of the room. "And it would be a lot easier with music, so I'm improvising."

I giggled as he brought my other hand up to his shoulder, running the tip of his tongue over his lips as he got me to match his footsteps.

"Loving you is easy 'cause you're beautiful." He sang, squeezing my waist in an attempt to tickle me. I remembered the song instantly, it was the same one my dad chose to play at my parent's wedding and my mom always talks about how cheesy it was.

"Oh no, not 'Lovin' You'." I said as Luke pulled me closer to his chest.

"Making love with you is all I wanna do." He wiggled his eyebrows at me and I rolled my eyes, suddenly getting spun in a circle under his arm.

"Loving you is more than just a dream come true." He try holding back his laugh as he pulled me back to him, but not so surprisingly failed.

"Why Minnie Riperton?" I questioned as I looked up to the ceiling then back at Luke.

"And everything that I do is out of loving you." He tilted his head to the side, right before unexpectedly dipping me to the side.

I squealed from the sudden action and clung my arms tightly around Luke's neck. He pulled me back up, singing some very masculine 'la la la's as he continued to dance-or try to dance-with me.

He never finished the song from his lack of remembrance of the lyrics, leaving me to constantly go over the first verse. And it was that moment there where I realized that this was no longer a 'try and see what happens' ordeal, I was truly in love with him.
