Chapter 30

I sat at the kitchen table, typing an essay on my computer that was supposed to be due today. Thankfully, we were practically snowed in and classes were cancelled today. It was Friday morning and Luke had just left to get breakfast for the both of us, despite my want for him to stay here and out of the treacherous snow, he decided against me and did what he originally planned.

I pushed myself back from the table, taking a break and picking up my phone next to me. Luke had been gone for a little over an hour and knowing him, he took a detour to 'the cafe right across the street' he had claimed. I scrolled through my contacts, landing on his name and calling him.

I tapped my foot along with the rings, standing up and walking to the coffee pot as I waited. The click of him picking up was heard, along with a few muffled laughs in the background.

"Hey, baby." He dragged on his words, making me roll my eyes.

"Ew." I plainly said, scrunching up my nose at the nickname, but also at the smell of black coffee.

"I could practically hear you cringing." He chuckled.

"That I was." I sighed. I furrowed my eyebrows as I stirred sugar and milk into my drink.

"Where are you?" I asked, changing the topic.

"Ashton's. Calum got back from some trip on Sunday and all they guys are here so I stopped by to say hey." He told me, the sound of laughter and conversation fading away. It sounded as if he had left the room.

"He lives in New Jersey, right?" I questioned, taking a sip from my drink as I walked back to my computer.

"Did you know they don't pump their gas there?"

I laughed lightly, "I do now."

"Proper knowledge that you'll need in life." He boasted, probably proud that he knew the fact. He sighed into the speaker and I instantly bit back my bottom lip from feeling a bit guilty on taking away from his fun. "Give me 20 minutes and I'll be home." I lightly smiled at his words even though he couldn't see it.

"Alright." I quietly replied, leaning back into the uncomfortable wooden chair.

We exchanged our goodbyes and I went back to my work. I rubbed my eyes before I stared at the bright screen again, trying to force out the last two pages. I tied my hair up as I studied the research I was writing the essay on, securing it in a loose pony tail before I continued on.

I went back to working out paragraph after paragraph, but had jumped when I felt a pair of hands on my shoulders. I tilted my head back, seeing Luke already leaning down to me, placing a short kiss to my lips.

"I didn't even hear you come in." I watched as he walked around me, sitting in the chair next to me.

"Your nose has been buried in that laptop since last night." I glanced over to his fallen expression that was supported by his propped up elbow. I subtly frowned as I slumped into my seat.

"I know, I'm just feeling a bit stressed." I rubbed my face with my hands, blinking back at Luke.

"I get it." He shortly said, nodding once. He brought a hand to my back, rubbing over it gently. "Want a day off?" His lips pulled into a thin smile that matched his tired eyes.

"This is a day off." I sighed once again, looking back over to my laptop. Luke slowly shut it, both of us knowing that we needed nothing but to escape school for a little while.

"Come cuddle with me on the couch while we watch reruns of 'Friends'." He insisted, sticking out his bottom lip at me. I inhaled deeply, the smell of the breakfast he had gotten pulling me more towards the idea.

"Sounds cheesy." I replied, my smile widening.

"I've got breakfast and coffee and we have a couch. We can watch horror movies all day if you want." He turned to me, hitting his knees on mine and rested his hands on the top of my thighs. "Come on, actually be my girlfriend for the day." I laughed as I glanced down to the ground, nodding my head at him and pulling him back to the couch where we'd be spending the rest of our day.

-

I yawned as Luke sat back down on the couch, letting our 5th movie start. He went back to his spot where his arms wrapped around my waist and his head laid on my shoulder. My feet were kicked up on the table with a blanket draped over me.

I focused on the opening scene of the movie, yet it was broken once I felt Luke's hair tickle my neck. I fought back my smile, trying not to let it show that him nuzzling into my shoulder was driving me crazy. He stopped for a moment, then suddenly pressed his lips to my neck, being more gentle than ever.

I tilted my head to the side, giving him a bit more room for him to roam. He hummed against my skin instead of leaving marks like he normally did. I let the soothing feeling drown everything out except for him. He scooted closer to me, moving his hands around my waist as he pulled me closer to him.

I erupted into giggles as he kept tickling the skin on both my neck and waist. He smiled as he brushed his lips along my jaw, then quickly went to my lips, kissing them shortly.

"I like when you laugh like that." He muttered, still smiling as his hand grazed under the back of my shirt. His eyes were locked onto my parted lips that were still tingling from when he kissed me.

"Why?" I breathed out. His nose brushed up against mine, if we were any closer I would have my lips over his. He pinched my side once, making me giggle once again.

"Because I'm the only one who can make you do it." He smiled, peering up at me through his thin lashes.

I felt my cheeks warm up and the sides of my eyes crinkle as he leaned back into my, pressing short and soft kisses against my lips. I loosely slung my arms around his neck, only to have him pull away from me shortly after. His closed smile was wide, one that resembled a little kids.

"What?" I asked, poking at his dimple that stuck out. He slightly swayed side to side, resting his head back down on my shoulder as he kept his gaze on me.

"I just like you." He said, still keeping his smile. I ruffled his hair and leaned back into the couch, letting him wrap himself back around my body.

You would think that it would be the short girlfriend clinging to his side, but it was the exact opposite. From day one Luke has always been, literally, at my side. It's part of his protective and/or jealous side that he has with me.

The familiar tone of Luke's ringer was heard along with a short groan from him. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and checked the name, answering it after two rings.

"What's up?" He spoke, running a hand through his messy hair. He quickly glanced over at me then back to the TV. "Yeah, I haven't left since I got back." I watched as he sat up a bit straighter, furrowing his eyebrows. "I don't know, I'm with-"

He was cut off by loud banging on our front door, followed by loud laughs and rushed words. Luke sheepishly looked over to me, getting up and walking to our front door. I leaned over slightly, getting a view of Luke unlocking the door and opening it to reveal three of our friends eagerly wanting to get inside from the cold.

"Can we come inside? It's cold as shit out here." Michael's voice was distinct from the two others, even though they were all speaking fast and with chattering teeth.

"I'm a little busy." Luke told them, yet was pushed aside as they barged into our house, causing him to be left with the most displeased expression.

"What are you even doing?" Michael asked as I leaned back into the cushions and sighed lightly. Luke walked in, sitting back down next to me as we waited for the others to join us.

"Oh." Michael shortly said as he followed into the living room. "You were doing Autumn." He smirked, earning a laugh from Ashton and Calum.

"Girlfriend, bro." Luke reminded him through partially gritted teeth. My cheeks flushed from his stupid remark, making Luke sling around the back of the couch where I was sitting.

"I didn't know, bro." Michael replied, mocking his words. "When did this happen?" He gestured between Luke and I.

"A month ago." He informed him, giving him a short laugh. I shook my head, returning back to the movie whose sound was soon drowned out by the four boys in my living room.

I sighed and pulled my knees to my chest, Luke instinctively wrapping an arm around my shoulder and pulling me close to his side. He ruffled the top of my hair and I let out a short groan, the other boys laughing at my messy hair.

My hands fell into my lap, zoning in on their conversation about Calum getting a beach house in California for the summer.

"My parents bought it just as a summer house, it's not very big, but we'd really only be there to sleep." Calum shrugged his shoulders and I realized I'd missed out on more of the conversation than I thought.

"And they're fine with all of us using it for the summer?" Ashton asked, looking at Luke and I then back at Calum. He nodded his head as his question, leaning back into the chair beside him.

"Obviously we'd have to keep it in good condition and you know, not burn it down or anything." Calum explained. I glanced over at Michael, his smile growing at Luke who had the same expression.

"And how much is rent?" Ashton asked.

"There's no rent. It's my house." Calum laughed as well as the others.

I lost interest in the conversation and grabbed a hold of Luke's leg, squeezing it once before I stood up. He looked up at me, ignoring his friend's conversation, and giving me a subtle pout. I faintly smiled at him, walking back into the kitchen to grab my laptop that I left on the table that morning.

I noticed the low battery flashing at the bottom of the screen as I walked the hallway back to my room. I backed up a few steps poking my head back into the living room where the boys voices had fallen quiet.

"Um, Luke?" I asked, grabbing his attention. He raised an eyebrow at me as he waited for me to continue on. "I'm using your computer charger, mine's fried apparently." I sighed, knowing he hated when I stole his things out of his room, which I did quite frequently.

He nodded, "Okay." His tone was just as easy as his smile, causing me to return the grin.

I trailed back down the hallway and into his room, quietly shutting his door behind me. I stood in the middle of his messy room and I shook my head from the piles of clothes on his bed and floor. Our rooms were set up almost exactly the same and his looked like a completely different place.

I dug around his empty desk and searched through his drawers, my luck running out. I frowned as I stood up, peering around his room once again. I walked over to his bed, seeing the black chord tangled under a shirt of his. I unplugged the chord next to his bed, tossing the shirt off only to reveal his black book wide open, the same one that I had.

I narrowed my eyes at the page, it being the last one. There was a long list of dates, all starting from August then skipping to September then becoming more frequent and soon there was a date of every single day for the past month.

I looped the chord neatly in my hand as I skimmed over his sloppy handwriting, trying to figure out exactly why he was writing down meaningless dates. I took it as some weird project he was working on for himself and ignored it, leaving his room and letting the guys voices linger throughout my house.

I crawled into my bed and tugged my blanket over my legs as I started typing away on my essay once again. I blinked multiple times to try to get over the drowsy feeling I had and to focus harder on the work, which had failed. It felt like I'd been sitting here for two hours when in reality it had only been 45 minutes with only half a page done.

"Autumn?" Luke's voice followed his three knocks he always did, breaking my stare at my screen. He walked in before I could answer and leaned on my door frame.

"The guys left." He informed me. I slowly nodded a couple of times, biting at the inside of my lip. "But they'll be back later with some take out and possibly snow shovels." He laughed, a smile instantly pulling at the corners of my lips.

He sighed along with me as walked towards my bed. He sat right next to me, gripping onto my bed frame. We exchanged a few strange looks, causing the silence in the room to be ruined.

"Are you alright?" He rested his hand on my knee that was still under the covers.

"I feel a little off." I admitted, glancing down at the ground. He started swinging his legs back and forth, but quickly stopped.

"You know what next week is?" He gave me a half smile and scooted towards me, nudging me with his shoulder.

"What?" I breathed out as he gestured for me to straighten my legs out.

"Your birthday." He grinned, resting his head on my stomach. I looked up and then back down to him as I returned the cheesy smile. "And you know what's two days before that?" He ran a single finger up the side of my arm, sending goosebumps all over me.

"Valentine's day?" I said as if it was a question, but Luke asked me this every year. Usually he'd buy me a box of Valentine's cards that you used in elementary school and whine about how stupid the day was, but I shut him up with the box of chocolates I would receive.

"You are correct." He replied, sitting up and getting me to move over so he could lay next to me. "So what do you want to do?" His fingers drew light trails over my exposed collarbone, making me practically melt into him.

"You don't have to do anything." I told him, staring up at him. His head was propped up in his hand by his elbow as he seemed to be studying me.

"But I want to." He pouted.

"How about we stay at home at tell each other cheesy pickup lines?" I suggested, tangling my legs with his.

"We do that everyday." He chuckled, taking in a deep breath.

"Then we can go out to dinner and tell each other cheesy pickup lines." I smiled, but it faded once his hand had ran over my side, making my stomach knot.

"How about we stay home and not tell each other cheesy pickup lines?" He offered, leaning in closer to me. My breath hitched as I pulled an inch away from him, peering up into his softened eyes.

"Then what are we going to do?" My voice fell quiet as I already know what he had in mind. I smiled as he looked to his right then right back to me, giving me a smirk.

"I have an idea in mind." He mumbled right before attaching his lips to mine.
