Chapter 16
My parents and Luke's parents always went out the night before Thanksgiving, leaving all of the kids here while Luke joined in with us. But this year, April, Travis, and his girlfriend had tagged along which left Luke and I to stay with Effy. I didn't mind this though since Effy followed directions quite well and would probably be asleep before Luke even came over.
It was 9 o'clock now, I had put my little sister to bed despite her wanting to join Luke and I all night, telling me that she was 'a big girl and can stay up to 11'. This is the only fight she ever put up, but then eventually got the point once I actually left her room and shamelessly left her in her room to fall asleep.
I jogged down the stairs and just on time, there were a few knocks on my door. I jumped off the last step and rushed towards the door, unlocking it and seeing Luke waiting out front with his hands in his pockets.
"Hi." I breathed out, giving him a smile. He returned the expression back as he stepped inside my house. It was strange how this exact moment had happened just 2 years ago. "Effy's already in bed so we've practically got the house to ourselves." I told him as I followed him into the living room.
He sat himself on my couch, stretching his arms out behind the back of the couch and picking his feet up to rest on the rather large coffee table that sat in the middle of the room. I stood in the corner of the room with an eyebrow raised as we looked at each other back and forth for a few seconds.
Luke looked rather tired, from either lack of sleep or because he had just woken up and drove himself over here. It seemed perfectly fine from the gentle smile he was giving me, but it was readable in the weight that settled under his eyes that told me different.
"What time did you go to bed last night?" I questioned as I leaned against the wall.
"I didn't." He finally spoke.
"You didn't?" I repeated. He slowly nodded his head then shifted in his seat. "Aren't you tired?" He shrugged his shoulders, seeing as he wasn't exactly affected by the lack of sleep.
"Not really." He replied.
I glanced down at the ground then back up at Luke who had his arms stretched more towards me, gesturing for me to sit next to him. I walked towards him and sat with my back against the arm of the chair and my legs crossed, letting my knees barely brush the side of his leg. We had a smaller couch than the one in Luke and I's apartment, but it was easy to adjust to since we had sat just like this a thousand times.
"Why did you stay up all night?" I asked out of curiosity. His eyes were focused on whatever was playing on the TV in front of him, but he took a glance at me before turning back.
"Because I could." He told me with a half smile pulling at his lips. I rolled my eyes, not wanting to keep pestering him with a question he wasn't actually going to answer.
Things hadn't felt different between Luke and I even though necessarily things were different. It was clear that we wanted more from each other, I just didn't exactly know what Luke had in mind because we haven't actually talked about it. For all I know Luke could just be confused about everything, but then other things start to come into play that changed my view on that.
I was still facing towards him with my legs crossed, scanning every inch of him as he kept his attention on the screen. My eyes trailed up his torso, to his neck, then his lips, then I froze once I met his eyes. A small smirk pulled at the corner on his mouth.
"Do you really want to know why I was awake all night?" His tone seemed critical as he turned his body to face me.
"Well, yeah." I answered, fumbling with my hands in my lap. His chest rose as he took an obvious deep breath.
He crawled over to me, closing the small space between us. My breathing hitched as he put a hand on either side of me and hovered over me. I kept my head tilted slightly downwards and bit onto the inside of my bottom lip from the nervous feeling he was giving me. I picked up my head the smallest bit and felt my nose brush against his.
"Do you mind if I kiss you?" He asked in a hushed tone.
"N-No." I replied, tripping over my words. I watched as the tip of his tongue ran over his lips, making it hard to keep myself from not moving in right then and there. Just as I thought he began to lean in, he moved down to my ear, closing our proximity even more.
"You said needed a friend right now." He muttered. I didn't answer for moment, but I did the second his lips latched onto my neck. I silently gasped from the sudden touch as I wasn't expecting it.
"I do." I answered back as he peppered kisses along my neck. He pulled back from me slowly, staring down right into my eyes. He switched between them, keeping his slightly swollen lips parted.
"Then what's going on?" He whispered, shaking his head lightly. I opened my mouth then shut it right after seeing as I didn't actually have an answer.
"I don't know." My voice quivered from the slight guilt I felt.
The noise of keys jingling in the door make us both cock our heads in the direction over my shoulder. I looked back at him as he slowly crawled back off of me and to his original spot. His face was blank and his lips pursed as we made eye contact once more. Luke looked up as the door opened, yet I was still getting over the rush he just gave me.
"Hey lovebirds." April called out as she shut the door, snapping me from my thoughts.
"April." I groaned. I brought my hands up to my face, trying to hide the blush that crept onto my face. "Why are you back so early?" I asked, watching as she stepped into the room.
"I just got bored. Adults are boring." She told me as she took off the heels she was wearing. She stood up on the bottom stair where her shoes were now laying and smirked, looking between Luke and I. "And don't think I didn't see you guys by Luke's car a couple days ago."
My face flushed instantly as I went wide eyed and stared at April as she kept glancing between us.
"Oh my God." Luke mumbled. I peered over at him to see that he was just as red faced as I was.
"Typical bad boy move. I didn't know you had it in you." April taunted, tapping her feet along the hardwood stairs as she climbed up them.
"April, shut up!" I shouted. It felt more awkward than anything to know that your older sister saw you lip locking with a boy against his car, let alone have it be a boy that she knows extremely well.
"You know Mom and Dad are going to find out about this." She laughed. Luke and I looked over at each other and I went back up to her, shaking my head lightly.
"Not if you don't tell them." I replied rather harshly.
I knew that if my parents found out that I had all of a sudden became attracted to the boy I was sharing a house with that there would be no way we could go trough with it for the rest of the week, it didn't even matter that it was Luke.
"I won't, I won't." She put up her hands in defense and she reached the top of our stairs.
"But I told you it was bound to happen." She crossed her arms, smiling devilishly down at us. It was very obvious she was pleased with herself and her prediction.
"So you know?" Luke spoke up to April.
"Well, I know you have the hots for my sister." She chuckled. I rolled my eyes, seeing Luke rubbing his temples from the corner of my eye.
"You're so lucky you're at the top of the stairs." He grumbled at her, leaning back into the couch.
"I just hope you're being safe at your guys' apartment." She said before flicking her hair off her shoulder and turning on her heels to go to her room.
"April!" Luke and I both yelled. We heard her door shut, more of a slam than anything, and turned to each other again. I watched him sit up straight, dropping his feet from the table and resting his elbows on his legs.
I realized how serious it could be for the both of us if we got caught by anyone else, it's worse enough to have April knowing since she had the biggest mouth in our family. Right next to Effy, of course, but she has an excuse because she's 7.
"Shit." Luke mumbled. I sighed lightly, thinking over the course of events that just happened. I placed my hand on his shoulder, getting him to look back up at me.
"You have nothing to worry about."

It was around 12 o'clock and we still hadn't left the couch. My feet were propped up on the coffee table and I was leaning back into the cushions of the couch. One hand was combing through Luke's hair, as he had felt that my thighs were a pillow, and one hand was holding my phone as I scrolled through it.
"Autumn?" Luke piped up after not talking for a while. I looked down to him, taking my attention away from my screen. "I want to do something." He pouted.
"We are doing something." I chuckled, referring to the movie that was playing on my TV. He rolled his head over and stared at the screen for a moment then back over to me.
"I'm getting bored." He stated. I gazed down at him and watching as he batted his eyes at me a few times with a childish smile. I laughed lightly, poking the dimple he had on the right side of his face.
"Stop it." He said, trying to swat my hand away. I tested him a little more, pinching the tip of his nose.
"Autumn, stop touching my face." He spoke in spaces since at the same time he was trying to bite at my finger.
"You're so weird." I giggled as he sat up and was now out of reach of my hand.
"And you're a lot more than weird." He chuckled, twisting his body to where his back was pressed to my curled up knees. I shot him a glare yet kept the playful smile on my face.
"What's that supposed to-" I began, but was cut of by Luke's lips on mine. He was there for a mere second, not even giving me time to kiss him back. He pulled back, smiling from ear to ear yet didn't show his teeth.
"You have to stop doing that." I breathed out. He laughed at my words, lightly throwing his head back.
"Stop kissing you or stop taking you by surprise?" He asked, picking his hand up and resting it on the side of my face as his thumb brushed over my cheek lightly.
"What do you think?" I said in a hushed tone, returning the same cheeky smile he was wearing.
He pulled me towards him and kissed me harder than before. I let my legs lay straight, giving him the ability to push me down until my back hit the cushion while he made it obvious that he was dominant in this situation. I clung my arms around his neck, pulling me down even further towards me to where his chest was pressed against mine. I was now laying on my back as Luke supported himself up with one arm on one side of me as the other laid flat on my waist.
It set me off beyond belief from how normal this had felt. Even though it was something new and something I actually hadn't experienced with Luke, it felt like we'd done this a thousand times. He knew where my sweet spots were and how a certain touch on my waist made me weak. Even though it seemed right and normal, it only made me want more. It intrigued me how we seemed to fit to each others bodies perfectly without even trying.
I gripped his hair, encouraging him on. I parted my lips, letting his tongue slip inside. I began to sit up slowly, backing my way up against the arm of the chair to lean my back on. It was so interesting to see this side of Luke before. He definitely knew how to take control and that's something I wouldn't have suspected out of him. It was almost a contrast to his actual personality.
He pulled back from me, just enough to where he could speak. We sat in silence for a few seconds before he spoke up.
"You know," He began, showing off his casual smile. "I never thought I'd be making out with my best friend on this couch." He softly laughed and I followed, feeling his breath on my upper lip.
"There's always a first for everything, right?" I replied. I rubbed my lips together, still feeling his on mine. He sighed as he kissed me once again, this time being careful and soft. His hum sent vibrations through my lips which made me smile into him. We had only been in the spot for a couple seconds before the sound of something falling onto the hardwood floor was heard.
I pushed Luke's chest back, breaking the kiss, and looked over towards the stairs. They were covered by the wall and I was only able to see the bottom step. I squinted my eyes to see that April's shoes were knocked over and now sprawled along the floor.
"Wait here." I mumbled to Luke as I got up from the couch. I sneaked around the corner and stopped right in front of the stairs, seeing Effy standing halfway up them. "Effy?" I quietly called out.
She stepped down, one by one, squeezing her stuffed animal in her arms. Her hair was rather messy and she looked like she had just seen a ghost.
"Why are you awake? Are you alright?" I asked her, picking her up and carrying her into the kitchen. I sat her down on the counter and watched as she kicked her legs back and forth.
"I had a scary dream." She told me, staring up at me with fearful eyes. She then looked over my shoulder which made me follow her actions.
Luke was just now walking into the kitchen with the same pouty lip I had on. His lips were still red and swollen from the scene we had before, which made me worry about what all Effy had seen since she did come to the bottom of the stairs.
"Do you want to tell me about it?" I clung my arms around and felt her shake her head to tell me that she wasn't wanting to talk about her nightmare.
"Okay, then let's get you off to bed." I began to pick her up, but she dropped her legs from around my hips and started to pull away from me.
"Can Luke take me?" She requested as she pointed her finger towards Luke.
"Why not me?"
"Because Luke is big and strong and can fight any monsters." She informed me. I turned to Luke seeing he had his eyebrows raised at us with a smug look on his face. I sighed and stepped aside, seeing that Luke was more excited to take her back to bed than she was.
Luke had been Effy's favorite since she was born, she even favored him over her actual big brother, Travis, but then again Luke was around a lot more. She even favored him over me which Luke bugs me about way too often. Also, Luke was way too good with kids for not having a younger sibling or anything like it.
"Just don't run into any monsters." I joked as he carried her up the stairs and out of my sight.
It was crazy how things seemed to go from new to old, from something I wasn't used to to something that I was. I had gone from making new possibilities on an old couch to going back to the old days when Luke payed more attention to my little sister than me when we were home. And right now I didn't know if I was cherishing the past or longing for our future.
