CH. 12 - When in Need

I didn't have to wait for him this time.

Danny was already sitting there behind the window slot as I turned the corner. I grew angry, storming towards him as I tried to ignore the flashes of cabin memories that attacked my mind.

The prison guards around me quickly noticed my aggressive manner.

"Why did you do this to me!" I screamed at Danny, slamming my palm onto the glass that separated us, making him flinch. One of the guards rushed over to me, holding me back from hitting the glass again as tears ran down my face.

"I loved you and you ruined me!" I cried hysterically. "I trusted you and you left me like this!" I writhed around in the guard's arms and he called for another guard to restrain me.

"Why can't you just tell me you're sorry for what you did? Not just over the phone, I want to hear it from you. I just want to feel better Danny can't you see that!" I gritted my teeth, bringing my attention back to the guard as the second one roughly pulled my arm back against my back.

I stared at Danny with teary eyes, noticing the slight look of pity he gave me without saying a single word.

The guards began to drag me away from Danny's window slot. "Ugh, let me go!" I screamed, kicking and twisting around attempting to free myself. "Let me go, I said let, me, go!"

My eyes opened immediately before my body knew I was awake. I stared up at the ceiling fan until I regained feeling in my body. I sat up, turning on the lamp by my bedside.

I just, sat there.

Waiting for my heart to stop beating so fast and my breath to slow down.

I touched my face and of course, my fingertips were wet. I had cried in my sleep again. I deeply sighed, hiding my face in the palms of my hands before wiping my eyes. I can't keep up like this.

I reached out for my phone on my nightstand, looking at the time. 5:37am. I hastily called Amelia, hoping there was a chance she'd pick up the phone. I needed a friend at the moment.

I sadly sighed, bringing my phone away from my ear as the ringing stopped and I heard her voicemail.

I laid back down on my side, snuggling into my covers as I scrolled through my contacts, thinking of someone else to call.

My eyes stopped on Christian's name and I hesitantly pressed it, anxiously gazing at the call button on his contact page. Here goes nothing.

I pressed the call button, closing my eyes as I held my phone up near my mouth listening to the line ring.

"Nadia?" His voice was husky. My eyes fluttered open as I didn't expect him to answer the phone. "Hey Christian, sorry I-I didn't mean to wake you up." I sheepishly responded.

He softly chuckled. "Nah, it's fine. I really wasn't sleeping anyway." He paused, exhaling deeply. "Insomnia is a real bitch sometimes."

We lightly laughed and I felt my nerves dissipate. I wondered if he couldn't sleep because he was still grieving.

"What's going on though? You okay?" Christian asked.

"Um, yeah. I just...can't sleep either." I lied. "You know, with everything that happened..." I trailed off, wondering if I could ever open up to Christian about my nightmares of Danny.

"I'm really sorry Nadia. Especially if I was the reason he hurt you."

"You weren't." I quickly responded. I didn't want Christian to blame himself for my actions. "It wasn't your fault at all this was between me and him."

I shouldn't have lied to Leo, I know. I wouldn't be in this mess if I told him the truth.

But that wasn't possible in my mind. I knew Leo wouldn't have wanted me around Christian.

He didn't trust me.

Maybe one way or another, we would have ended our relationship. I mean really, with all the damage I did with Danny was there anything left? He hoped the promise of marriage would save us. It was a last resort.

Leo held onto me because he needed me.

I stayed because I didn't want to be alone.

Maybe Leo was right. I did ruin everything.

"Christian can you tell me a story?" I didn't want to think about how problematic Leo and I's relationship was. "A story?" Christian laughed. A smile crept onto my face at the sound of his laughter. "Yeah, a story." I beamed. "About anything."

He sighed and I imagined his face with a grin, shaking his head at how childish I was being. "Okay, well don't get too excited. This is gonna be the most boring story ever so you can fall asleep."

I giggled, wrapping my covers around my head. "Okay, that's fine." I smiled. I just want to hear the sound of your voice.

...

Seth took a deep breath as he stood in front of Leo's doorstep. He nervously glanced at the doorbell before pressing it. He fiddled with the engagement ring in his pocket until Leo opened the door.

"Oh, hey Seth." Leo lightly smiled at him. The smell of liquor quickly greeted him and Seth tried to mask his disappointment in Leo.

"Hey Leo, uh, can I come in?" He asked sheepishly. "Yeah, yeah sure what's up?" Leo gestured him inside. "I won't be long, I just wanted to talk to you."

Leo chuckled as he shut the front door. "Yeah? About what?"

Seth glanced down at his feet, letting out a soft exhale. "I know what happened."

Leo just narrowed his eyes at Seth, looking at him quizzically. "Last night, between you and Nadia." Seth continued. Leo lightly scoffed, rolling his eyes. "Nothing happened. It's not a big deal."

Seth raised his eyebrows in concern, surprised by Leo's nonchalant manner. "Not a big deal? C'mon Leo, she ran to my house terrified you were gonna chase after her. She was hurt. You hurt her."

"Yeah well, no one told her to lie and cheat on me again." Leo muttered bitterly as he leaned against the door.

"Leo but she didn't cheat-,"

"And how would you know that?" Leo raised his voice, stepping closer to Seth. Seth scoffed, taking a step back away from Leo. "Because she told me what happened. Why would she lie in a situation like that?"

"Because she's a fucking liar Seth! That's what she does!" Leo's face flushed red and his jaw clenched as he tried to control his anger. He felt the urge to cry. "It'll be stupid of you to believe anything she says at this point." Leo sadly mumbled.

Seth shot him a sympathetic look as his shoulders relaxed. "Look, Leo, I know shit went downhill after she cheated on you and I'm sorry about that. But, I'm not here to argue or judge your relationship." Seth reached for the engagement ring in his pocket, handing it over to Leo. "I'm just here to tell you that it's over."

Leo sighed, gazing at the ring that shimmered in the palm of his hands.

"Nadia asked me to give it back to you. I'm sure there's really no surprise there." Seth spoke softly. "Yeah..." Leo whispered, shoving the ring away in his pocket.

"Leo," Seth began, looking at him with a glimmer of sincerity in his eyes. "I know it's gonna be hard to move on from this but you deserve better than what Nadia gave you. And she's not the only one who's gonna be there for you. You have me. You've got Tony, Jake and David too. Nadia shouldn't be your only emotional crutch to prevent a serious relapse. We'll help you out if you need it."

Leo quickly swiped his hand over his eyes, wiping his emotions away. "Yeah, thanks Seth." Leo attempted to smile.

"But seriously Leo, physically hurting her was fucked up. You're lucky, I don't think she plans on pressing charges against you." Leo shamefully glanced down towards the floor at Seth's words. "Yeah, I know, I know." He nodded. "I'm not proud of that. I just-,"

"Drank too much?" Seth interjected. "Yeah you say that a lot."

Leo felt a pang of guilt in his chest.

Seth placed a comforting hand on Leo's shoulder. "I'm telling you this as your friend Leo, I think it's time you sober up before things get worse."
