Dawn
It was seven o'clock in the morning. The sun shone through the voile curtains, directly onto the sleeping couple. The sluggish air carried in birdsong and the smell of damp grass, causing one of them to stir.
Aaron slowly opened his winter grey eyes, wincing at the brightness of the sun. He rubbed them with his bronze brown hand that had a blotch of white skin on it. Sitting up, he pushed back the covers and sat on the edge of the bed, stretching and yawning as he got used to the sunlight.
He turned back to look at his husband, Jason, who was still sleeping peacefully. Aaron smiled and placed a light kiss on his husband's forehead before heading to the kitchen. He knew Jason would take a while to get up, so he would usually make breakfast for the both of them.
Taking out some of the ingredients and setting the pans out, Aaron got to work. He decided to make one of Jason's favorites, since he knew Jason would have a long day today. He actually had a long few months ahead of him.
Today was the start of hunting season, and everyone around them saw Jason as the one who would always hunt during that time. As a matter of fact, they relied on him to hunt. He was the one who always brought food to everyone's table, and money to his own home.
Still, as much money as they made and the amount of food they had, it was always stressful for Jason. It was even more stressful for Aaron. Jason would be in the cold all day and night, which sometimes made him sick and unable to do much. There was also the fear of an unexpected attack from a wild predator. Jason mostly hunted prey such as hares and deer, but he would sometimes go for the occasional wolf or bear.
As much as Aaron hated it, he knew Jason knew what he was doing. Even before they got married, Jason would go and hunt every year, he had faith and confidence in his husband.
Cracking a few eggs onto the griddle and letting them cook, Aaron got 4 pieces of sausage and put them in a separate pan to his left. On his right, were two pancakes that were almost done.
As he was waiting for everything to cook, Aaron felt a presence moving about, getting closer to him. Just as he turned his head, he felt two rough hands on his waist and a pair of lips on his cheek.
"Good morning to you, too." Aaron greeted, leaning up against his husband as he flipped the eggs.
"The food smells nice. Did I do something good?" Jason asked, looking at the food that his husband was cooking with his blue eyes. Unlike Aaron, Jason barely wore a shirt to bed, showing off his muscular build and tan skin.
Aaron chuckled, "No, silly. Today's the first day of hunting season, so I thought that you would like something to keep you going until lunch or dinner."
"Really? Remind me to return the favor..speaking of hunting, why don't you try it yourself? You're good with a bow and arrow. Plus, you practically grew up in the woods."
Aaron shook his head as he put Jason's serving on one of the plates, "I may have experience, but that doesn't mean I want to. I'd prefer to leave the hunting to you and others. After living in the forest for 23 years of your life, you tend to get sentimental about killing animals." he said, removing himself from Jason's grasp and placing his plate on the table.
Aaron wasn't like most children. Other than his patched skin, he was raised differently than the others. He wasn't raised in one of the neighborhoods or around any other houses. No, he and his 5 adoptive siblings were raised in a house in the forest. They weren't too far away from civilization, but by the time he had found out about the town nearby, he was twelve-years-old.
"Don't worry, I get it. Trust me, I got an earful from your brother the last time I saw him. And your sister, too. I'm surprised you guys aren't vegetarians." acknowledged Jason as he cut into his food and took a bite.
"We're perfectly fine with eating animals. It's just that they were our best friends for majority of our lives, so we don't like to see or hear about them being killed." Aaron clarified. He saw that Jason had an amused smile on his face and was about to open his mouth. Aaron pointed a finger at him, "Don't you judge me! You chose to marry me and marry into this family."
Taking one last bite of his food, Jason smiled at his husband, as he walked away. "And I don't regret it one bit."
