Chapter Eleven
Lupin
Lupin had never felt so full in his life, when he saw Mrs. Albescu emerge with another plate full of buns he decided it was time to make strategic exit.
"Thanks for all the tasty buns Mrs Albescu, but I'm gonna be late for Vespers. The Abbott will make me scrub the refectory for a week if I'm late again." Lupin was talking rapidly as he was backing out the door.
"Wait Lupin! Try my apple and garlic bun, here take some for the rest of the brothers!" She was hastily filling up a wicker basket.
"You are being far too generous Mrs. Albescu, the brothers will think they are in heaven when they taste these" Lupin kept nodding and smiling.
"Lupin don't forget to ask the Abbott about presiding over Masha's wedding next month" Mrs. Albescu followed him out the door.
"I won't forget" he turned to go.
"And Lupin don't forget to ask the Abbott about Gosha we haven't heard word since she has been gone!" She was waving vigorously.
"I won't forget", Lupin started to run. Oh geesh I think I like the mean Mrs. Albescu better, the nice Mrs. Albescu is scary!
As Lupin entered the Abbott's office, the Abbott greeted him lugubriously. "Lupin you are late for preparations for Vespers...again"
"Father this time I have a good excuse!" Placing the overflowing basket of buns on the Abbott's desk.
"What is the meaning of this?"
"I think Mrs. Albescu has gone crazy!" He exclaimed.
"Lupin, being charitable is not crazy"
"She would be happy to hear you say that Father"
"I'm afraid to ask why"
"She wants you to find information about her daughter Gosha"
"Simple enough....and?" The Abbott asked suspiciously.
"And she wants you to preside over her daughter Masha's wedding next month. Remember Father, charity" Lupin tried to flee, as if from holy retribution.
"Mother Mary!"
"Father?! If I said that I'd be scrubbing the refectory for a week!" Lupin finally had the upper hand, and it felt good.
