Chapter 41
Rosie's POV
I couldn't believe it. I didn't want to believe it. He couldn't have cheated on me. I stood there in front of the woman who I called "mother", frozen in shock, anger, sadness, confusion, etc. "You're wrong", I whispered quietly to myself, trying to believe what I said, but mother must have thought I was talking to her and said, "What did you say, dear?" I turned to faced her and said, "You're wrong." She shook her head at me and took me by the arm and pulled me toward the bed to sit.
"Rosie, I am telling the truth. I saw Daniel leave another room buttoning his shirt. It was early in the morning and watched him enter your room", she said. I couldn't believe her. "I don't believe you. Daniel would never do that to me. He loves me. He would never hurt me. If you are going to accuse him of cheating on me, I want to see proof", I said angry that she would dare accuse him of this without proof.
She was silent for a while, and for a moment, I thought she had given up on this, but of course I was wrong. "Your father has the proof", she said and made her way toward the door. I followed her into what seemed like a vacant room and went toward the closet and pulled out a shirt. I immediately recognized the shirt to be Daniel's because no one else here was his size.
"Mother, what are you doing with Daniel's shirt?" I asked confused on why she had it. "Smell his shirt. Smell it and you will believe me", was all she said and held out the shirt for me to sniff. I looked at her as if she was crazy, but sniffed the shirt anyway. There lingering on the shirt was the faint smell of a woman's perfume. I recognized that perfume. This perfume belonged to my friend, Brigid. Why is her perfume on my husband's shirt?
"Ah, I see that you finally believe me", mother said in a smug voice. I couldn't help the tears that started to form, but I didn't let any of them fall. For if one fell, the rest would follow. "Mother, whose room is this anyway?" I asked gently, not sure if I could take the answer. Mother looked at me, sadness in her eyes and said, "Brigid's."
Daniel's POV
I couldn't believe that that old hag had made up such an unbelievable lie. I would never cheat on Rosie! I would die if I ever did that. I need her. I love her. I was snapped out of my thoughts when I heard the sound of the door knob turn. They were leaving. I had to hide. I immediately ran from my spot in front of the door and ran down the hall.
I watched as Rosie and her mother leave my room and enter Brigid's room. Why would they be going in there? I followed behind them quietly and listened from the other side of the door. "Mother, what are you doing with Daniel's shirt", I heard Rosie ask in a confused tone. Why is my shirt in Brigid's room? "Smell his shirt. Smell it and you will believe me" said her mother. This is weird.
Why is her mother asking her to smell my shirt? What is so special about my shirt that she has to smell it? What will she believe when she does? "Ah, I see you believe me", her mother said smugly. Rosie was silent for a while until she said, "Mother, whose room is this anyway?" She sounded so hurt. I just wanted to go in there and hug her and kiss her tears away.
"Brigid's", said her mother. Rosie was quiet except for the little squeak that came from her lips. She only made that sound whenever she tried to hold back the tears. Soon after that I heard her start to sob and the mere sound made my heart break into little itty bitty pieces.
I couldn't take it anymore. I burst through the door and immediately ran over to my wife who was in a fetal position on the floor. I sat beside her and brought her into my arms, but when she realized it was me who was touching her, she scrambled out of my lap and stood up. "Get away from you, you, pig!" she screamed at me. To say I was shocked was an understatement.
Never had I ever seen Rosie so angry. Not even when she was fighting with her mother not that long ago. "Rosie, you don't believe that I would cheat on you do you? You know me better than anyone Rosie. I would never cheat on you. I love y-" "Save it you man whore. You promised me that you would never hurt me. You promised me that we will be happy together. You promised me. And now you do something like this?" she said. Her voice laced with sadness.
"Was I not good enough?"
"Of course you were good enough. I only need you."
"Then why did you sleep with Brigid? Why is her perfume all over your shirt?"
"I don't know. I haven't even seen Brigid. She left a few months ago"
"Maybe because you were screwing her and she didn't want to get caught."
I was shocked. How could I make her believe me? I had to fix this mess. I had to keep her calm. The doctor said that stress wasn't good for her or the baby and no doubt that her stress levels were through the roof. "What if I could prove that I didn't have sex or cheat on you with Brigid?" I asked hoping she would allow me to explain and fix this. She didn't answer but her mother said, "She doesn't want to hear your proof. She's seen enough."
And with that they left, but before they walked out of the room, Rosie said, "You were the last person I thought would ever betray me. I trusted you with the most fragile thing I owned and you destroyed it. Threw it away as if it meant nothing. I thought you were different. I was wrong." And with that they disappeared down the hall back to our room. From here I could hear her crying, and just like her, I dropped to the floor and sobbed until I fell asleep.
