Chapter 16
Getting a horse seemed to hype all the residents of the small base. The sun had barely risen above the horizon, just finishing burning the last few mobs and chasing Creepers back into the forests and caves, when the four adults went back to the fenced area and began to construct the foundation for the stable. Techno had left the house after shoving a carrot into his mouth for breakfast, leaving Phil and Tommy to sleep a bit longer. That didn't hold that long though, as Tommy woke up soon after and accidentally disturbed the winged man when he made himself breakfast. No surprise there.
As usual Phil complained about his back and not getting enough sleep, just to silently eat the breakfast Tommy brought him while staring out the window, too lazy to complain further after he got what he wanted. His back was actually feeling better than it had in days, the burning pain now lowering to a weaker stinging whenever his wings moved. It gave him hope that today might be the last day of active growing and then the feathers will start to develop. From what he can see, the last joint was out now, so there shouldn't be a lot of bone missing until he reached full wingspan, at least without feathers. They had already made quite the jump in size from yesterday morning to this morning.
"Phil?" The blonde turned his head away from the window and towards the teen, who stood by the door, shifting his weight from one foot to the other. "Can I go help the others build? I'm bored. And you look better so..." Phil huffed and shook his head. Ah yes, kids, always wanting to get away from responsibility. Though he can't blame him for it, the house was pretty boring. "You think I am not bored?" "Well... you probably are but..." "Just go before I change my mind. You listen to what the others tell you though. I don't want to hear any complaints from them." "Thank you!"
Tommy grinned, grabbed the stone sword he was given for self defense (As they do not trust him with any other material yet) and rushed out the door, leaving Phil by himself. Well, not by himself, he had Brian with him. The crow trilled and looked up at him, making him laugh. "You think I don't know that? Someone has to tell him what to do or he'll end up causing way too much trouble. Besides, it's not us making him ask for permission to do stuff, that's all him." Brian just crooned and cuddled closer to him, mockingly saying 'Goodnight Dad' before going back to sleep.
Phil decided that he should get some more sleep too, mainly because he can feel how the last part of the wings was starting to slip out and it felt disgusting, so he rather try and not be awake when that happens.

"Oh no, the child his coming." Techno looked up from where he was helping Sapnap with the layout of the stable to see what Dream meant, just to see Tommy sprinting over the small bridge and towards them. For a second he felt panic grip his heart, thinking that something happened with Phil and that he as here to get them to help. But when he stopped in front of them, grinning with his sword at his hip, he knew this wasn't an emergency at all. "Tommy, you are supposed to stay with Phil." "He allowed me to help you guys! He's feeling much better so he doesn't need to be watched." "Did he say that or did you?" "I mean... he implied it." "Tommy-"
"Let the kid help. If Phil would have wanted him to stay he wouldn't be here. Or Brian would have already come over to fetch him." Tommy grinned at Dream, very much appreciating that he defended him and Techno knew that the masked man will be his favorite person for the day, just because he did that. "Fine... Help Dream set up the corners once we are done here." "Got it!" Tommy happily took the offered cobblestone and wood from the masked man as they watched Sapnap and Techno finish the general layout, using cobblestone to mark the walls.
"Do you think it's big enough?" George walked along the small wall that was supposed to mark the sleeping spot of the horse. "Should be. We can make the actual stable part a bit bigger so the horse has enough space to lay down and walk around a bit." "Sure. Carl only deserves the best." Sapnap laughed as he moved the cobblestone a bit further out.
"What if it's a girl?"
"Carl is universal."
"You are an idiot."
"What? You think Phil checked if his crow is a guy before naming it Brian?"
"Phil can understand him and just ask."
"Who says I can't understand Carl?"
"If anything, you should be able to understand Blade, but you can't."
"You don't know that. Maybe I am keeping it a secret."
Dream looked over to his pet pig, who was sat in the grass and watching them with big eyes. He happily grunted once he noticed his owner's attention and waddled over to him for pets. "What is he saying now then?" "He wants treats and cuddles. Obviously." The masked man snorted and sat down to cuddle with Blade for a while with George soon joining him. "That pig has everyone wrapped around his hoof." "Yup, you should have seen the amount of treats he got during the first few days here."
Once the outline of the building was fully finished, they began construction. Tommy and Dream began constructing wooden pillars to act as corners, while George and Sapnap began with the first wall. Technoblade worked on getting a stable floor done as quickly as possible, so they have a solid platform to stand on. It wasn't necessarily a difficult task, but it took long and the sun burning down on their backs didn't make it any easier. Sometime during the construction Brian came flying their way, but only circled them for a second before cawing and flying back. Blade followed him, so it was probably not meant for them.
"We can agree that they are just Techno and Phil in animal form right? They are like, best buds or something." Tommy looked after the two animals, watching as Brian swooped down to land on Blade's back after he almost smashed himself into the button that opens the door for his friend. "Oh they definitely are. When we still shared a house they constantly cuddled together for warmth." "Kinda cute... my dogs aren't this nice to each other." "That can happen. As long as they don't try to kill each other." They continued construction, making good progress for the short amount of time they have spent on it so far.
"Are we out of wood again?!" Techno searched through the double chest of materials they have set up after noticing how many different things they are crafting. "I swear we had more." "Well I don't have any, just stone." "I just got some sticks." Techno groaned and got up, walking back towards the base to grab some more. His crown glittered in the sun as he disappeared into the stone walls, making Tommy grin. "You have it, don't you?" Dream looked down to him from his spot on top of the pillar, slowly starting on the first part of the roof. "Oh yes. That's what the bitch gets for wanting me stuck in that small house all day."
"You are an evil child." "I am not a child!" "You are until you turn 18." The blonde chucked a piece of wood up at the man, who easily moved out of the way. "You are starting to lose favorite-privillage." "What does that even mean..." A loud caw grabbed their attention and soon after a familiar looking hat landed on Tommy's head. "The fuck?" Brian sat down on one of the pillars and cawed again, while Blade waddled over with some water bottles tied to him. Techno was close behind him, carrying more wood.
"Phil sent it out so we take a break. Poor guy dragged himself out of his bed to try and get it tied to Blade before I came in. Hat is for Tommy to not get a heat-stroke." He dumped all the wood into the chest and wiped the sweat off his forehead. "How is he?" "Says he is better and his back is starting to calm down. His wings are almost out, so he should be back on his feet soon." "That's nice."
Everyone put most of their current materials into the chest to take a break and drink some water. Techno's cape was fanned out and put on top on three small fence-pillars, creating some more shade for them to hide under. While everyone grabbed their bottles, he noticed a lot more wood in the chest than what he had brought. So someone was hiding it. And he has a good guess on who it was, based on the snicker of a certain someone when he looked into the chest.
"Tommy!"
The teen just laughed and began to run away from the adult, who was clearly very upset with him. "Come here! This time Phil isn't here to save you!" The other three drank their water and laughed at the small chasing scene, which ended in Tommy having most of his water dumped on him than in his mouth. But he was still laughing, so no real harm done there.
"If you do that again I will lock you in with Phil and you will never help us build again!" "Try and make me, bitch boy." A piece of wood was thrown at him, which he didn't manage to evade like Dream had done. "Ow!" "Your fault." Tommy just crossed his arms and leaned against the half finished wall, pouting. "Are you two done now? We should hurry if we want this done before nightfall." Techno huffed and went to grab his collected wood, immediately noticing that some was missing again. Slowly, he turned to Tommy, who had a shit-eating grin on his face.
"Oh you're dead."
~~~~~~~~~~~
Phil yawned and stretched, immediately wincing afterwards. His nap hadn't lasted long, judging by how the sun was just a bit further than her halfway point. Techno had walked in when the sun was just an hour away from her highest point. Brian was happily munching on some berries he managed to steal from the barrel, but Phil was too tired to tell him off. Carefully, he stretched out his wings and found that they didn't burn as much anymore. A glance over his shoulder showed that quite a large part of the last bone had slipped out while he had slept. There couldn't be more than a few inches still in there.
"Oh thank god... almost over." The flesh on the first part of his wing had already started to darken and he could see small black spots on them. His feathers are already starting to grow in... that's good. Hopefully that won't take too long. But now that his back is hurting less... maybe he can get up? Just a bit. Laying on his stomach for so long made him sore all over... and he really wants to move.
Despite his better judgment, he dragged himself to the corner of the bed and moved his legs off the edge. Okay... so far so good. Slowly, he pushed himself up with his arms, hissing at the dull pain that shot up his spine. But he kept going anyways, too stubborn to really care, and leaned against the wall for support. He managed to fully get on his feet and let out the breath he was holding. It didn't hurt that bad, he can manage this. It's only a little worse than mining soreness.
He hissed again when he stood to full height and straightened his back, almost doubling over when he sudden spike of pain shot both through his spine and his wings. But he bit his tongue and took a step, then another, then wobbled over to the kitchen area. His legs are shaking and his balance his thrown off through the extra weight on his back, but he can manage. Could be worse.
His hands were shaking when he lifted the cup with water to his lips. Brian cooed and tried to bribe his friend back into the bed, who was clearly still in pain. But as usual, Phil was too stubborn and instead slowly made his way to the door. Fresh air... sun on his skin... he missed it a lot. He wasn't even caring about not wearing his undershirt in favor of nothing blocking his wings. It was way too warm outside anyways.
Brian trilled and tried to tug him back to bed by his hair, but Phil just shooed him away and opened the door. He took a deep breath and used the wall as support when he stepped outside. The sunlight hitting his skin felt heavenly after so long inside. Sure, as a streamer people would consider him not much of an outside person, but he does go out for walks or small shopping trips with Kristin quite a lot.
With still shaking legs, he started to wobble over to the farm, wanting to check on his crops and see of Techno had replanted today like he promised. He hadn't. "Little shits... they'd starve if I wouldn't do it for them." They had thought ahead and left a chest with replanting stuff against the wall behind the field, shaded from sunlight so they don't turn bad.
So Phil grabbed some seeds, carrots and potatoes, hissing whenever he had to lean down to grab stuff, before entering the small fenced area. Since leaning down won't work in this case, he just knelt down next to the first patch of farmland and will crawl to the next once he needed to.
Brian watched him for a moment, clearly noticing the pained expression on his friend's face whenever he moved. Once he accepted that Phil will in fact not stop because of the pain, he took off to go get Techno. Probably the only person Phil would actually listen to when it comes to his health.
