Vacation? It's Never So Simple...
As the two sped down the staircase, the noises of the tardis were softening. The Doctor released Frank's hand and hurried over to the control panel.
"Ah! We've made it!" He exclaimed, clapping his hands together.
"Where to?" Frank asked, walking over. The Doctor turned to him with a wide grin.
"Here! Now!" He said, pointing to the tardis' doors. "Go look!"
Frank rolled his eyes, changing his course of direction. The Doctor was going to keep this a surprise. He stepped down the staircase quickly, getting to the door with building anticipation. He grabbed the door and pulled it open to be greeted by an incredible sight.
The galaxy was laid out in front of him. Stars seemed to dominate the dark atmosphere, scattered with swirling hues of color. Frank remembered looking up at the night sky through his telescope, but it never compared to this.
"Woah..." Frank marveled, stepping out of the tardis. His feet met a metal surface. He looked around to notice that the tardis was in a full metal room with a wall of glass to display the space outside.
"A literal space vacation!" The Doctor exclaimed, jumping out of the tardis. "It's basically a small hotel room that gives you a view of the space your drifting through." He came up next to Frank, holding his hands behind his back and rocking on his toes.
"That's actually what's outside?" Frank asked, pointing to the amazing view.
The Doctor nodded. "We're far from any time you may have been alive in. Welcome to 4639! Or somewhere around there."
"That year doesn't exist." Frank laughed, looking at the Doctor in disbelief.
"Afraid it does, Frankie boy, because we're kind of in it." The Doctor shrugged.
"Are there other people here?" Frank asked, walking closer to the glass that separated them from the infinite space on the other side. "Since it's a space vacation thing?"
"I don't see why not." The Doctor shrugged again, "Feel like exploring?"
Frank grinned, shaking his head eagerly. "Yes! Can we?"
The Doctor motioned for Frank to follow him around the phone box and over to a door that blended with the metal room. He pressed his hand against it, causing it to dissolve away before their eyes.
"Woah..." Frank laughed in amazement, stepping through the now open space. "The future is rad..."
"The future is now." The Doctor grinned, watching Frank look around the metal paneled hallway. "I think the main entertainment rooms are to your left?"
"Can we go?!" Frank asked as another door opened just a few feet away, revealing a tall man with brown hair.
"Please!" The Doctor nodded, gesturing down the hall.
Frank hurried down the hall, with the Doctor right on his heels. It didn't take long for the hallway to expand into a large room. It was full of booths, and people and...
"What are those?" Frank asked as two human like creatures with blue skin and long robes walked past.
"Aliens, Frankie." The Doctor whispered into his ear, "I brought you somewhere entirely new this time. Didn't mess up on coordinates." He looked extremely happy with himself as he spoke the last part.
"How often do you mess up coordinates?" Frank asked with the raise of an eyebrow.
"More than I'll ever admit. Now, come on! Let's look around." The Doctor rushed through his first sentence, pulling Frank into the flow of people before he could question it.
It was like a small street fair. There were strange gadgets (which the Doctor made Frank promise not to play with), exotic fruits, and everything in between. The people around them were just as varying. Humans and alien alike nodded kindly at the Doctor and Frank as they explored.
"This is insane..." Frank muttered as he marveled over a small piece of jewelry with a live fish swimming inside the stone.
"Neato, isn't it?" The Doctor grinned, "Take the fishbowl with you! Problem only comes when it gets hungry..."
The vendor, who was a tall creature with blue scales, shook his head. "We aren't responsible for fish death due to malnourishment."
Frank gently set the piece of jewelry back down as the Doctor made a bit of a unsure face. The walked on, continuing to browse.
"How different is payment here?" Frank asked, watching the exchange of small, metal bars for goods. "Because I'm broker than a tooth fairy in a meth house."
"Colorful mental image, and yes! I believe it's credits..." The Doctor paused, looking around. He stopped the tall man that Frank had seen leaving his room earlier. "Excuse me, is there an ATM or credit dispenser around?"
The tall man nodded. "Yea! Just by the entrance from the rooms."
"Thank you, random giant."
The tall man laughed, shaking his head. "My name's Dallon, but random giant works too."
"Thanks, Dallon." Frank chimed in with a small wave, "I'm Frank and this is the Doctor."
Dallon raised an eyebrow. "Like medical doctor? I didn't think they were allowed onboard."
"No, I'm not much for needles or sticking them in people. It's cringy." The Doctor shuddered before regaining his composure. He tilted his head at Dallon as the rest of his sentence processed in his brain. "No medical onboard? What if someone gets injured or sick?"
"There's a special infirmary a few levels down." Dallon replied, pointing at his feet. "That's the only place medical is allowed. You guys miss the introduction video?"
"Sorry, my Doctor is very distracting." Frank shrugged.
The Doctor turned to him with a strange look. "Your doctor?"
"The Doctor." Frank corrected himself, desperately fighting back the heat that was rising in his cheeks.
The Doctor shrugged, simply turning back to Dallon. "We were busy with books. " he smiled, "Thank you for your help!"
"No trouble." Dallon smiled. He waved his hand slightly before walking off to look over the different oddities.
The Doctor turned back to Frank with a hint of confusion in his furrowed brow. "That's odd... There never used to be a special infirmary level on this station..."
"You've been here before?" Frank asked as the Doctor began to walk back in the direction of their room. A man in a dark robe rushed past them, nearly running into Frank.
"A few times. I like to look at the little things they sell and create. It's a fun outing."
"It's more like a swap meet than a space vacation destination."
"Okay, maybe I was a bit off! Isn't there a song from your era about nobody being perfect?" The Doctor asked as they made their way to the hall they had entered through. Near the opening, there was a small machine that someone was pulling credits from.
"That's so 2007 and so not my taste in music." Frank replied with a roll of his eyes.
"Then how'd you know that much?" The Doctor asked with a smirk, earning another set of pink cheeks from Frank.
"So what is this place, then?" Frank finally spoke after they waited for the credit machine to be clear of people.
"It is where I said in space and time..." The Doctor replied, pressing some buttons on the machine. It made a decline noise, making the Doctor narrow his eyes at it. He pulled out his sonic screwdriver as he continued speaking. "Around 4639... I've been here before, but sometimes things change against my memory of a place..." The Doctor let out a cry of success as the machine spat out some credits. Although, it had only been after he held the sonic up to the machine.
Frank extended his hand as the Doctor passed him some of the metal bars of currency. "This is so weird..." Frank muttered, holding it close to his face.
"Like paper money isn't weird?" The Doctor asked with a laugh, "Something so simple is so valued, yet it can be destroyed so easily."
Frank shrugged. "Got me there..." He brought the credit to his pocket and slipped it inside. He had no idea how it even worked, but it was safer to have it he supposed. He was about to ask the Doctor about it when a loud message echoed through the air.
THE NIGHT IS COMING, PLEASE RETURN TO YOUR ROOMS.
Frank looked up at the ceiling in confusion.
"That's new as well..." The Doctor muttered. People were beginning to file into the hallway next to them. "Why is this a thing?"
"How can you even tell the difference of night and day in space?" Frank muttered, following the Doctor as he grabbed Frank's wrist and pulled him with the crowd.
"Is that really the only part of this you're questioning?" The Doctor asked.
"It's a valid question!" Frank argued, " Anyway, what did it used to be like?"
The Doctor shushed him as they walked down the hallway. They split off from the flow of people only when they reached their room. The Doctor waited patiently, leaving Frank confused.
"Doctor, what-"
The Doctor held up his hand, gesturing to the tall man, Dallon, that they had met earlier. He was going up to the room right next to theirs. His arm twitched as he reached into his pockets.
"Dallon! Random giant, how are you?" The Doctor inquired, smiling warmly.
Dallon looked up from his door key, quickly smiling when he saw who had been addressing him. "Doctor! Hello again." He waved, "Looks like were hall mates."
"Care to come in for some tea?" The Doctor asked, opening his and Frank's room. "Bit of chit chat?"
Dallon frowned. "We're suppose to stay in our rooms after dark. They really don't like people outside."
"Who's they?" Frank asked.
"Who?" Dallon looked questioningly at Frank, like he didn't know what Frank was talking about.
"You can stay with us for the night." The Doctor replied simply, "Our room is still a room. You won't get in trouble with us."
Dallon's expression switched from confusion to a smile. "I guess that's right. I'd love to." He walked over to the Doctor and Frank's room as the Doctor got the door open. His eyes grew wide as he looked at the large phone booth inside. "My room doesn't have that feature."
"We got a deluxe package." Frank lied, smiling at Dallon. Something seemed a bit off about the taller man, but he wasn't sure what.
Dallon reached out, pressing his hand against the blue wood of the time machine. "Wish I had something like this." He mumbled as he looked at it in amazement.
"You don't know the half of it." The Doctor grinned, walking around the tardis. "I'll get the tea!"
Frank looked around the room as the Doctor slipped into the tardis and Dallon observed the back of the ship. The room seemed to have changed. There were two beds on each side of the room, sticking out of the walls. There was also a table with chairs surrounding it by the door. All encased in the metallic color of the walls.
"The future is weird..." He muttered to himself as he turned back to Dallon. "Wanna sit?" He asked.
Dallon nodded. "Yea, thanks." He walked over, quickly sitting with his gaze still on the blue box. "That box reminds me of stories I used to fall asleep to..." Dallon said, absently.
"Like what?" Frank asked, kicking his feet onto the table and leaning back in his chair.
"Like, stories..." Dallon's face scrunched in confusion as he thought about it, "I... I used to know?"
Frank looked at Dallon curiously. He didn't seem this strange upon their first interaction, then again it hadn't lasted that long either. He just seemed a bit out of it.
"So... What's this area of space like?" Frank asked, "I'm a bit new to it."
"The ship is lovely." Dallon replied, "It orbits one of the most beautiful galaxies..." He sighed, propping elbow up on the table to hold his head.
Frank nodded, bringing his feet slowly down from the table. "It's pretty fantastic, isn't it?.." He asked. He looked over at the tardis, wondering what was taking the Doctor so long. "I'll be right back, Dallon, sorry about it."
"That's alright." Dallon nodded, looking off at the wall.
Frank nodded, sliding out of his seat and moving around the tardis. He opened the door and quickly hurried inside. The Doctor was up by the control panel, holding a mug up to his lips.
"Mmm, Frankie!" The Doctor exclaimed, waving his hand energetically above its head when he saw Frank, not moving the mug from his lips very much. "I tried your coffee drink, and it's so good! I think this new regeneration really loves it, it's so funny how that works sometimes..." He mused, taking another sip.
"That's nice, Doctor, but I had a question about Dallon?"
The Doctor nodded, hurrying down the steps with the mug still held to his lips. "I snuck a sneaky scan with my sonic in the hall." He said, looking at his mug sadly. "I feel like there may be a slight addiction in this stuff."
"Do you take the sonic out on everyone?" Frank asked, raising an eyebrow at the red headed time lord.
"To be fair, I was looking for my psychic paper when I accidentally hit the button. It just so happened to be angled in Dallon's direction..." He trailed off, setting his mug on the staircase railing. "I really wanted to ask him about this doctor below business."
"Did you get something strange on the sonic?" Frank asked.
"Possibly." The Doctor nodded. He started for the door before he spun on his heels. "The tea!" He exclaimed, hurrying back up the steps. "I can get a coffee refill as well!"
Frank laughed, watching the Doctor run down a hallway that Frank had yet to explore. He waited by the door, looking around the main room of the ship. The whole "bigger on the inside" thing was still astonishing to him. He couldn't understand why a man, well alien, would want someone as average as Frank to travel through space with in something like this.
"I return!" The Doctor exclaimed, pulling Frank from his thoughts. He was holding a tray with three mugs and some cookies on it. As he hurried down, he looked at Frank with question. "I forget, do americans call them biscuits? Or do you call them something else?"
"Those are cookies, Doctor." Frank laughed, taking one when he hit the bottom of the steps. "You honestly talk like you're from Europe, but you don't have the accent."
The Doctor pouted. "I hate it! I miss sounding smarter. I am still smart, but the accent added at least twenty clever points."
Frank rolled his eyes, holding the door open for the Doctor. "They're really good cookies, at least."
"Thank you, Frankie. I took them out of the wrapper myself."
Frank laughed again, pushing his hair out of his face as the Doctor walked past him. He followed, being sure to shut the door behind him. He walked around the tardis to see the Doctor at the table with Dallon. He walked over, sitting down in his chair from before.
"Thank you for the tea, Doctor." Dallon smiled, holding his cup tightly. "I feel like I'm dying of thirst." He brought it up to his lips as the Doctor nodded.
"Thank you for coming to talk for a bit." The time lord watched Dallon, carefully. "I wanted to ask you about the lower level."
"The what?" Dallon looked at him with confusion, "What lower level?"
"The one we discussed briefly today." The Doctor replied. Frank noticed the Doctor draw his sonic screwdriver under the table. He pointed it at Dallon, letting it flash green.
"Levels... There are no levels..." Dallon twitched, slightly. "This is..." He twitched again.
"What are you doing?" Frank muttered, leaning close to the Doctor's ear.
"Well, my sonic can only really meddle with technology." He replied, watching Dallon's head fidgit as his eye twitch.
"Th-th-there is only l-l-level one one one!" Dallon suddenly fell forward on the table, still twitching.
"What the fuck!?" Frank cried out as the Doctor stood, "First fucking tentacle porn, then a robot!?"
"Welcome to my life." The Doctor gave Frank a quick grin before looking Dallon over. "This Dallon is different from the first one we spoke to..."
"There's more than one?" Frank asked, reaching for the Doctor's coffee.
"Oi! That's mine." The Doctor snapped, pointing his sonic at Frank.
"I'll leave you some." Frank said, taking a gulp of the warm liquid.
The Doctor shook his head at Frank before lifting up Dallon's arm. He held the sonic up to it, causing it it glow blue before a panel popped open.
"I take it back, I need some comfort coffee." Frank shook his head, drinking more.
The Doctor sighed, looking at the panel that popped open on Dallon's arm. "I think this has to do with the level that suddenly doesn't exist." He grinned. He turned Frank, who was setting the now empty mug down. "I know this was supposed to be a vacation for you, but feel like going exploring?"
Frank looked at the Doctor, letting out a sigh. Did this alien just attract trouble?.. Even if he did, Frank still found himself ready for the adventure.
"Oh, I'm there." Frank grinned widely.
