Heros On The Drums

The Doctor sighed as he looked around the empty room. He already missed the kids he had just dropped off to Lindsey, who had graciously taken them in. Her small daughter seemed quite excited for the new arrivals as well, already talking Melanie's leg off about her teddy bear.

That had only been hours ago, but the Doctor was getting a feeling on loneliness building in his chest. Frank had disappeared onboard soon after dropping the children off. The Doctor assumed he was in his room, so that's where he went to check.

He hurried down the tardis hall, careful to not trip as he sometimes did when no one was around. When he got to Frank's room, he took a moment to catch his breath before knocking on the door.

"Doctor?" Frank's voice carried through the door, making the Doctor smile.

"Yes, Frankie. Who else would it be?" The Doctor laughed, "May I come in?"

"Sure..."

The Doctor pushed the door open with a smile that quickly fell from his face. Frank was sitting with his legs criss crossed on his bed.

Frank looked up at the Doctor with puffed eyes and teary cheeks, yet he had a small smile on his face. "Hi, Doctor..." He continued to smile up at the time lord.

"What's wrong?" The Doctor questioned, tilting his head at Frank as he walked into the room and sat down on the edge of his bed, "Your smile, it's a sad smile. Look at your eyes, there's tears, yet you're still smiling." The Doctor reached out and swiped some tears from Frank's cheek with his thumb, "It's a smile, but you're sad. It's confusing. It's two emotions at once. It's like you're malfunctioning."

Frank sniffled and shook his head. "It's that sadness that comes from happy memories." He replied, "From those moments you cant relive, but you enjoyed every second of it when it happened. The ones you can't take back, but are extremely glad for their happening..."

The Doctor looked over Frank's face as more tears fell to meet at the still raised corners of his mouth. He could understand what Frank meant. There were times he remembered brilliant things he had done with brilliant people, but now they were simply gone...

"What memories make your emotions twist in confusion?" The Doctor asked as Frank sniffled and wiped tears from his eyes.

Frank laughed, quietly, before he spoke. "My grandfather. My hero who gave me passion for music and raised me to be a good man, at least I hope..."

"You are a good man." The Doctor assured him, "Don't ever let anyone make you think otherwise. You're absolutely fantastic, Frankie." He smiled as Frank wiped away some more of his tears.

"Thank you, Doctor..." Frank smiled at him before looking down. "I just miss him... It... My phone is still set on the time when we left." He explained, quietly, pointing to the small piece of technology next to him. "My timeline... And... It's the anniversary of when we lost him..."

"Oh, Frankie, I'm so sorry." The Doctor frowned. He could see Frank's eyes filling with fresh tears, which prompted the Doctor to reach out and pull Frank into a hug. Frank accepted the embrace graciously, hiding his face in the Doctor's shoulder as he let his tears flow silently.

The Doctor allowed Frank all the time he needed to let his emotions out on his shoulder. Everyone needs to take time for grief. It was perfectly alright to be sad sometimes. It could be worse to hold it in and allow it to bottle up.

After a period of time, Frank sat up with a sniffle. He smiled at the Doctor with more affection than the Doctor had yet seen from him.

"I'm sorry." He spoke softly, "I usually don't really break down that much... I just saw nightmares in that forest..."

"Never apologize for something like being sad for good reasons." The Doctor shook his head as he reached out to hold the human's cheek in his hand, "It's perfectly alright to have those moments, as long as you don't let them consume you."

Frank smiled before looking down. The Doctor leaned forward, as if to press his lips against Frank's skin, but he hesitated. Frank didn't seem to notice, however, as he leaned over against the Doctor's shoulder.

"I just miss him..." Frank sighed, "I only knew him as long as I was alive, but he's always been incredible." A bigger smile fell upon Frank's lips as he thought about it. "Back in the forties, he used to play all the time at clubs with his friends..."

The Doctor raised an eyebrow to Frank. "The forties you say?"

"Mmhmm." Frank nodded. He felt so much better to be next to the Doctor. The time lord just had such a comforting vibe about him, especially when it was just the two of them. "I have pictures, one I got tattooed on my arm, of him performing."

"Some of that skin ink on you?" The Doctor asked as a plot formed in his head, "Can I see it?"

Frank sat up with a nod. He scratched his head before tugging at the hem of his shirt. He pulled it up over his head and threw it behind him. He then angled himself to show off his shoulder with a man's portrait on it.

"He was still alive when I got it." Frank grinned as he pointed to it, "He loved it."

"I bet he did..." The Doctor awed at the picture, observing it and every color of ink trailing down his arm. "It's lovely, Frankie."

Frank felt a twinge of happiness with the Doctor's words. The portrait of his grandfather had always been one of his favorites, and the Doctor's approval just made it even better. He couldn't fully describe it.

"Can you excuse me for a moment, Frankie?" The Doctor asked as Frank moved to grab his shirt back from the bed.

Frank nodded, pushing his palm against the tear stains on his cheeks. The Doctor nodded, hurrying to his feet and shooting Frank a smile before he left the room. Frank laughed, shaking his head. What was the Doctor planning now?

It only took a few minutes for the familiar noise of the tardis to start up. Frank made sure his shirt was on comfortably before he jumped to his feet and made his way out of the room.

Whatever sadness he had been feeling earlier was being replaced by a sense of excitement. When the tardis came to life, there was no telling what kind of adventure would come next.

"So, where are we?" Frank asked, skidding to a stop at the railing that looked down at the main platform where the tardis controls were.

"Wrong question to ask, Frankie!" The Doctor laughed, running around the controls to grin at Frank.

Frank rolled his eyes. "When are we, mom?"

The Doctor laughed as he rushed down to the lower level of the tardis. "That's better!"

"Doctor?" Frank leaned over the railing, just slightly, to catch sight of the time lord. He had just disappeared? "Doctor? Where'd you go?"

Frank walked over to the stairs and made his way down, curiously. Where the hell had the red headed alien gone? Just as Frank was making his way down the lower set of steps when the Doctor reappeared. Frank's eyebrow raised as he observed the Doctor's new outfit, a black tux with a matching black bowtie.

"Do you like?" The Doctor asked, spinning in his shined dress shoes.

"I do." Frank nodded, trying to take in every aspect of the outfit. "Really dig the bowtie."

"Well, I should hope so." The Doctor grinned, adjusting the small string of fabric around his neck. "Bowties are cool."

"Why the wardrobe change, Doctor?" Frank asked, walking over to the time lord.

The Doctor held out his arm, revealing another dark suit. "For a surprise." He said simply, "Get changed."

"What's this for?" Frank asked, taking the suit and draping it over his own arm. He tried to distinguish an era from its design, but he didn't really have an eye for that sort of thing.

"Just go put it on, Frankie." The Doctor insisted, pushing him towards the wardrobe. "Just go and hurry!"

Frank shrugged, allowing himself to be lead to the wardrobe. He slipped inside and the Doctor closed the door behind him. He slipped out of his clothes and observed the outfit given to him by the Doctor once again.

It was a white dress shirt with the black suit jacket and black dress pants. Something you'd wear if you were going somewhere nice, or attending something special. Why would he need this?

Frank was sitting on the floor, lacing up his own pair of shined dress shoes when the Doctor knocked on the wardrobe's door. He stuck his head in and grinned at Frank.

"Lookin' classy, Frankie!" The Doctor laughed, stepping into the room. He pushed his fingers back through his hair and adjusted his coat. "Are you ready to go?"

"Where exactly are we going?" Frank asked as the Doctor hurried over to help pull Frank to his feet.

The Doctor just giggled, squeezing Frank's hand. "You'll see."

The Doctor let go of Frank's hand and motioned for him to follow, to which Frank let out a playful groan.

"Just a hint?"

"Nope."

"What will it take for you to show me?" Frank asked, leaning against the wardrobe door as the Doctor hurried to the door.

"It'll take you closing the door over there and coming over here." The Doctor replied, crossing his arms. "C'mon, now, hurry up!"

Frank dramatically pulled the door closed before slowly trudging over to the Doctor. He could barely keep his grin concealed as he got closer to the Doctor.

"Now you're just a tease." The Doctor said with the shake of his head. He waited for Frank to get within arm's length before he reached out and grabbed hold of him. "Hurry up!"

Frank laughed as the Doctor opened the tardis doors and pulled him out. Frank found the Doctor and himself in an alley, with smoke rising from the ground in some spots.

"I'm guessing... Past?" Frank asked, turning to the Doctor, who was shutting the doors of the tardis.

The Doctor nodded. "Ding dong, okay! You're on the right trail." He spun around with a grin, "Any ideas of where?"

Frank looked around, taking in the bricks of the walls around them. The atmosphere around them gave him the indication that it was night, as it often seemed to be for some reason. The smoke made it feel a bit industrial... Or maybe a city?..

"City in the past." Frank said, walking towards the street.

"A specific city where a specific man is playing a show." The Doctor teased as he followed Frank to the street, "Any guesses?"

Frank turned to the Doctor with a raised eyebrow. The Doctor just grinned.

"Close your eyes." He told Frank, who nodded and complied. He felt the Doctor put a hand on his back and begin to lead him somewhere.

There was honking and faint voices, bit no real indicated of where they were. Frank had no time to focus on the stimulus, however, because the sound of a door opening filled his ears. The air changed from a bit noisy to calm and soft.

The Doctor continued to lead Frank for about another minute before the movement stopped. Frank could hear a chair moving before he felt a tap to his shoulder.

"Alright, eyes open and tell me where we are."

Frank did as he was told, and found himself in the room of a night club. Tables were scattered across the floor and a small stage was just ahead of them.

"I doubt you took me to a strip club, so can I ask what this is?" Frank asked, his eyes scanning over the stage and catching glimpse of a drum set in the corner.

"You dirty little man!" The Doctor gasped, "Not at all! Although, with it being not too long after the age of Speakeasy's and illegal alcohol, you never know what this place was. Currently, however, it is a music club with a very special guest playing tonight."

"What year?" Frank asked excitedly as the Doctor sat in his seat. Frank followed suit, looking eagerly up at the stage. "Is this why we're dressed up?"

"Just wait." The Doctor laughed, "He'll be out any moment."

Frank nodded as the stage lights flickered. He looked back towards them with anticipation. Who was it going to be? Who were some great musicians from... Well, the Doctor had said not too long after prohibition. Frank was lost in thoughts over who it could be, until he heard his own name.

"-And Frank Iero on drums!" A man up on the stage boomed, gesturing over to the drum set.

Frank followed the gesture with wide eyes to be greeted by the man tattooed on his shoulder. Frank's grandfather was laughing and spinning a drumstick in his hand as he sat at the drum kit. It was unbelievable. He looked to be in his twenties or thirties, just like the time that the photo inspiration of his tattoo had been taken...

"Doctor?" Frank turned to the smirking time lord.

"You like it?" The Doctor asked.

Frank felt lost for words. When he had told the Doctor about his grandfather, he had never expected anything like this.

"You're unbelievable..." Frank finally whispered in awe.

The Doctor winked. "Just enjoy the show, Frank. It's a once in a life time moment for you."

Frank nodded, turning back to the stage where his grandfather was just beginning to strike a beat. Frank couldn't describe his emotions as he watched the whole show. He only knew that once it was over, it didn't seem real at all.

"Frankie, do you need the shock blanket?" The Doctor asked, looking at him with a bit of worry. "I do hope you enjoyed it. I know it was a bit rushed bu-oh my hug!" The Doctor laughed as Frank lunged into his arms, holding him around the waist tightly.

"I'm never going to forget this!" He spoke in a muffled voice against the Doctor's jacket, "This was... I can't believe..." He pulled away and looked at the Doctor in awe, "You're absolutely incredible, Doctor, thank you."

The Doctor smiled at Frank. Knowing he had made the human happy made him happy. He loved the little things about Frank when he was smiling. The giggle that would unconsciously escape his lips, the way his eyes twisted when his smile pushed them up, and the glimmer in his eyes that just became so much more apparent with his happiness.

"I'm glad you liked it." The Doctor said, taking in every aspect of Frank's joy. "I really can't wait to see what's next."

Frank nodded. "Me too."
