Companions Never Listen to "Stay Put"
Meanwhile, the Doctor was backing into a corner with Captain Jack Harkness as the weeping angels grew closer. Snow sprinkled lightly around them as they tried to think of a way out of their current situation.
"How's your backup coming, again?" The Doctor asked, staring straight into the face of one of the stone creatures.
"Hopefully soon." Jack replied, staring down a different statute while simultaneously typing on to his wrist comm. "The past is fun and all, but it does have terrible reception."
"Easier to get a message to the future than the past." The Doctor shrugged before smirking. "Unless you have a time machine."
"Just keep digging deeper with that, why don't ya." Jack laughed, feeling his eyes grow watery. "Why don't we go back and warn past Jack not to go into the spooky old building that was obviously no good?"
The Doctor laughed this time, "No fun in that, is there?"
Jack grinned. "Oh, Doctor, I can think of a much more fun time if I can let my imagination wander for a moment."
"Does it even take that long for you?" The Doctor asked as he tried to think a way out of their current situation. "How far are we from Cardiff?"
Jack took a moment before replying. "Far enough, it seems like... We really could of used the short kid's eyes for this."
The Doctor shook his head. "No. He's going to stay put on the tardis, like I said."
"Does that ever really work though, Doctor?"
The Doctor let out a soft groan, only hoping that Frank would be slightly different from his past companions in that aspect. "Don't remind me."
---
Frank was tugging at the tardis door, begging for it to open. He had sat at the control panel for only a few minutes before he decided he could do something. If he could get out, he'd help the Doctor and Jack, whether they liked it or not.
"C'mon, just a crack!" Frank begged the time machine, using his full body weight to tug against the unbudging door. "The Doctor needs me! This is serious!"
Frank's palms were sweaty from his persistence to get the door open. Sweaty to the point that on his next tug at the handle, his grip slipped and he was sent flying backwards.
Frank let out a cry as he fell against the floor, sliding a bit and hitting his head. He only allowed himself to be down for a moment before he rolled over onto his hands and knees, turning to face the door once again.
"If you could just open for, I dunno, ten seconds." He muttered, lowly, pushing himself back up to his feet. "That would be great."
He groaned in frustration. He was resorting to talking to a ship. It felt as useless as trying to talk to the hologram earlier. He just needed out. He needed to find the Doctor to help him. He wanted to prove himself.
"What do you want from me?" Frank asked the empty air, throwing his head back with an irritated groan. How hard could it really be to get a door open? He remembered how his friend had once kicked a giant hole through a wall, and he was nearly the same height as Frank.
"I know you won't let me do that..." Frank sighed as he thought out loud, "You're not really giving me many options, either..."
Frank slowly crossed over the space between the door and himself. Once close enough, he let his head fall against the colored wood, simply resting his forehead there.
"I just want him safe, as much as he wants me safe..." Frank said after a few moments of silence, "I just can't be sure of his safety from in here... Then, what if he never comes back? What am I supposed to do?.."
He extended his hand and pulled at the door's handle weakly, still unable to get it open. Frank was tired. He had been trying so hard, but he had no idea how to coax the door into opening.
"The Doctor talks to you like you're a close friend." Frank said, holding his position of his head against the door. "With how old he is, and how long I assume you've been together, I wouldn't doubt it... He says you have feelings too. So, asking you as a friend of the Doctor's and trying to appeal to your emotions, would you please let me out so that I can make for sure he comes back to you?.."
Frank shook his head. It wouldn't work, he just knew it wouldn't. How could a ship even have feelings? The Doctor was as brilliant as he was mad at times. Frank was still in the process of thinking through everything, when he was flung backwards by the door opening.
He swore, lowly, as he shook his head. He looked up to see a snowy landscape outside of the tardis. Frank laughed, triumphantly, scrambling to rise to his feet. He ran to the doorway, but caught himself before he went completely out of the ship. He leaned back in and looked around the lit up surroundings.
"I owe you one." He said to the empty air of the ship, "Thank you."
After that, he quickly ran out into the snow. He scrunched his nose at the familiar substance as he looked around for any sign of where the Doctor and Jack went. His eyes eventually found faded footprints alongside deep divots in the snow. Frank looked at it, confused, but quickly began to follow them.
---
"They're getting awfully close, Doctor." Jack warned of the obvious sight.
"Well, if we didn't require blinking to remoisturize our eyes we'd be set, now wouldn't we?"
"Oh, feeling a bit touchy, are we?"
"Not in the touchy feely way, so get your hand back over there."
"Apologies..." Jack nodded. He was quiet for a moment before adding, "Very nice butt came with this generation, might I add?"
"I thought the same thing!" The Doctor laughed, "It's great, but not the right time."
"I do miss the accent as well."
"From the beginning I've been complaining about that!"
The two took a step back, which was hardly possible with what little space was behind them. They were in a corner, and help hardly seemed to be on their side.
"How'd we get into this again?" Jack asked with a nervous laugh.
The Doctor shook his head. "You're the one that found them. Never trust a statue, have I taught you nothing?"
"That one stung Doctor!" Jack laughed, once again, as he closed his eyes in a pattern that always left one open to look at the angel ahead of him.
The Doctor just kept locked with his angel. If he could just hold it until help arrived... If the help would just hurry up and get here...
"Doctor!"
Both the Doctor and Jack stiffened at the exclamation. In his peripheral vision, the Doctor could see that Frank was trudging through the snow in the distance, looking at the two with determination, as well as a slight confusion (probably as to why they were both bum to bum in a corner and slowly growing closer still).
"Frankie!" The Doctor exclaimed. He felt both relief for help, but a tear in his heart at the fear for Frank. "I did not give a signal for you to come out!"
"Who needs a signal now a days?" Jack muttered to himself. The Doctor ignored it.
"It's not safe!" The Doctor hollered to Frank, who continued to trudge forward.
"Exactly why you need help, right?" Frank hollered in response. He looked at the stone statue in front of the Doctor, "Just don't blink, right?"
"This is dangerous!" The Doctor scolded Frank. He hoped Frank would at least stay back instead of moving closer. He knew the likelihood of another incident of losing companions to angels in that way wasn't big, but he was still haunted by that moment in a way. Even though he knew how Amelia and Rory's story had ended, he couldn't bear even the possibility again.
"Life is dangerous with you, Doctor!" Frank argued, stepping closer as he stared at the back of the stone statue. "So, they really are like statues?"
"Only hard when someone's watching." Jack smirked, "They're shy."
"How do we stop them?" Frank asked, tilting his head.
"Keep 'em hard." Jack continued to smirk.
The Doctor nodded, "Keep watching." He began to slip to the side, knowing Frank was watching the angel. He still, however, kept his eyes on the statue he was merely centimeters away from.
"Can't do that forever, can we?" Frank asked, biting his lip. He wanted to turn to the Doctor, to make sure he was okay, but that hologram had been very persistent about not blinking. He assumed looking away would be considerable bad as well.
"There are ways to keep them put." the Doctor said as he managed to slip past the angel that had been in front of him with a sigh of relief. "If they stare at each other, it works the same way as someone staring at them, but you have to get them in that position-"
"Have you tried mirrors?" Frank asked, feeling his eyes sting from a lack of blinking. "It's essentially having someone constantly watching them, even if it is themself."
The Doctor turned to Frank in awe. "You brilliant little man!" The Doctor laughed, "Mirrors! Right, where can we get some of them? How far are we from Cardiff again, Jack?"
"Hopefully they get here soon!" Jack called out from where he was still standing, watching his angel.
Frank's eyes were watering as the Doctor questioned Jack further. He wasn't going to be able to hold his gaze on the angel much longer. "Doctor!"
It seemed to happen in slow motion. The Doctor turned in just enough time to see Frank blink. The Doctor quickly attempted to turn his head to stare at the angel, but he ended up catching the split second before Jack vanished into thin air. He had shifted his gaze to the other angel, who was already half turned, but left no one to watch his own angel. The Doctor froze where he stood.
"Where'd he go?" Frank asked, once again watching one of the angels. "Doctor!?"
The Doctor said nothing. He instead pulled out his sonic and pointed it in the direction of the angels, as well as, the spot where Jack had disappeared.
"Doctor, what do we do!?" Frank asked, feeling panicked again.
"Don't blink." Was all the time lord whispered in response. That didn't exactly help the anxiousness in Frank's chest, but he nodded. He wasn't at all sure of what to do other than what the Doctor instructed.
Frank was so busy worrying, that he only noticed the closeness of the Doctor when the time lord had his arm thrown across Frank's torso. He was stepping backwards and bringing the human along with him. Frank nodded, stepping back while keeping his eyes on the statue that was reaching out in the area that the Doctor had been only minutes before.
They continued to back away until the Doctor leaned into Frank's ear. "On my word, run. Run like hell to the tardis." He whispered.
"What about the angels?" Frank asked, continuing to step back further away from the growingly menacing statues with the Doctor.
"We have a head start." The Doctor replied in his hushed tone, "Do you trust me?"
"Always." Frank's reply slipped out without a second thought. He didn't need to think about it. He trusted the time lord completely. Maybe it was the feeling he gave Frank, or the way he protected Frank... But he definitely trusted his Doctor.
The Doctor let a small smile find its way to his lips before he leaned into Frank's ear once again. "On three." He bit his lip as Frank let put a soft noise of confirmation. "One..."
"Two..." Frank whispered with a breath of air.
"THREE!" The Doctor yelled.
Frank and the Doctor both spun on their heels and began running. Their feet thudded against the hardening snow, sending occasional flakes flying up into the air. At one point, Frank nearly tripped, but the Doctor caught him quickly and pushed him forward.
"They're gaining." The Doctor huffed as they got closer to the tardis. He was taking spurratic looks back while Frank focused on the main task at hand.
He made it to the door of the tardis and quickly pushed it open, falling inside. The Doctor hopped over him and quickly shut it.
"Atta boy, Frankie!" The Doctor exclaimed. He looked around, wildly as a pounding began at the door. "We need to find some mirrors."
"Where do you keep portable mirrors?" Frank asked, pushing himself to his feet. The Doctor extended his hand to pull the human up.
"That's a good question."
"DOCTOR!"
"Check the bathrooms!" The Doctor exclaimed, throwing his hands in the air as the pounding on the door continued. "We only need two, at most!"
The Doctor ran off to the side of the ship, leaving Frank a bit frazzled at where to go. He made his way to the stairs, taking them two at a time. He was rushing to the second set of stairs when the ship lurched, sending Frank tripping forward into the stairs leading to the upper levels.
"ANGELS HAVE THE TARDIS!" Frank could hear the Doctor shouting from some still foreign, to Frank, area of the tardis.
Frank began to crawl up the stairs as the tardis lurched again. There was a bathroom just around the corner if he could get to it.
"I GOT ONE! NOW WHERE'S THE DUCT TAPE!?" The Doctor exclaimed, once again.
Frank was at the top of the steps, and scrambling to his feet to run to the bathroom. He made it to the door before the tardis lurched again. Frank was caught by the lightly colored door, with a sigh of relief.
He pushed open the door and looked around the fairly sized room. Somehow, nothing had fallen to the floor and been broken. Including a small, round mirror on top of a shelf above the toilet. He quickly grabbed it, after carefully climbing onto op the toilet and back down again.
Frank stepped out of the bathroom and almost ran right into the Doctor.
"Frankie! You got one, brilliant!" He cheered, holding his own mirror in one hand as well as the duct tape he had been looking for.
"What now?" Frank asked as the Doctor motioned for him to follow.
"I've got a plan!"
"Should I be concerned at all?"
"Oh, hush, you."
They had made it down both sets of steps when the banging on the door began again. The Doctor looked determined as he stuck the roll of duct tape between his teeth and reached out for the door handle.
"Step back." The Doctor's muffled words hit Frank's ears, sending him back a few steps.
The Doctor nodded before a moment of stillness. The banging hit the tardis door again but, as soon as it stopped, the Doctor flung the door open and held up his mirror. Frank looked around the time lord to see the stone angel with outstretched arms and bared fangs. It was only about a foot away from the door, and it made him shudder.
"You look lovely today." The Doctor said as he popped the duct tape out of his mouth and caught it in his free hand, "Wouldn't you like to see for yourself?"
The Doctor propped the mirror against the angel's hand before taking the duct tape and beginning to wrap it up like crazy. "Now..." He nodded when he was done, obviously satisfied with his work. "Where's your friend?"
"We got him."
The Doctor looked around until he saw a black SUV type vehicle parked a distance aways. He smiled, stepping out of the ship, with Frank curiously trailing behind.
"Jack's back up I presume?" The Doctor asked a fellow with dark hair that was speckled with snowflakes, "I'm the Doctor."
"Yes, sir." The man nodded. Even as he spoke to the Doctor, his eyes were scanning the area around us. "Where is he?"
The Doctor frowned. "Nowhere he can't come back from." He assured the worried man. He was going to go on, but a female voice cut through the air.
"Did you say Doctor?"
All three men turned to see a woman in all black, with short, raven dark hair to match, walking up from the distanced car. She looked between Frank and the Doctor with curiosity, as well as, caution. "You're... Jack's doctor?" The woman asked, a bit unsure.
The Doctor nodded. "The one and only."
She nodded and began to dig into one of her pockets. She pulled out a small envelope and held it out to the time lord. "He said, just in case, to give this to you. Regarding an appointment?"
The Doctor took the envelope, quickly opening it and scanning its contents. A slow grin spread across his face as he went on. When he finished, he laughed, waving the paper, slightly.
"Good ol' Jack!" He exclaimed, turning back to Frank. "Whatchya just standing around for? We have an appointment to keep!" He began to hurry off in the direction of the tardis, but stopped. He turned back to the dark haired girl and smiled. "Thank you, Gwen."
The girl seemed a bit dumbstruck as the Doctor grabbed Frank's wrist and hurriedly pulled him away. She watched them in confusion, while also turning to her partner for a split second, before calling out, "But... I never told you my name!"
