Happy Pills

A week into the incident, Rose was finally able to breathe in relief. Detective Alex had reached out to her again and apologized for ditching her in the hall. He had been called by his fellow officers claiming they saw Robin but she escaped. Rose told him he had passed out in the washroom, which was obviously a lie.

On finally meeting up with the cop, he had warned her about Robin, claiming that she was most probably a stalker of hers. Rose had nodded and promised to stay very careful. However, her peace remained for long enough because Sophie's last belongings were recovered. The police were still looking for her but no one really had any hopes of finding her.

The news had been leaked to the media in no less than three days. The police thought it was someone from the crew itself but they didn't really care. The only ones affected by the news were the cast of the series.

Rose sat in her car, continuously clenching and unclenching her sweaty fingers. The inside of the car felt suffocative to her. Today the driver seated before her was a different one. The previous one had quit abruptly, probably too scared of the police.

"We are almost there Miss Veretta." The man spoke in his gruff voice.

Rose took a white pill, swallowing it down in water, before leaving the car. Darwin had called her early morning again saying that they found a video of her in the memory card of Sophie's camera. While the camera was destroyed, the memory card was camouflaged with the blood of the victims. The police figured that Rose, although entirely unconscious throughout the three-minute video recording, was present in the room. According to Darwin, the recording was halted abruptly as the two men entered the room. It was more than clear what was happening. Rose was called to the station for investigation. It made her annoyed to a great extent.

"We meet agian Miss Veretta." The lady, Lily, sat before her in the dimly lit room.

"Dective Lily." Rose nodded.

"I need you to answer with truth today please."

Rose wanted to scoff at that but that wouldn't have looked good and she was hoping to leave the room today. The unfamiliar and cold stench of the room was making her uncomfortable.

"Please." She said instead.

"Why did your driver say he left you at your home that day?"

Rose rolled her eyes internally, "I wouldn't know that detective but I do have a somewhat blurry memory of Sophie bribing him. I was too out of it honestly. My manager is sure that I was drugged that night."

He wasn't. Darwin didn't even know about any of this. But Robin had said it so it was most probably true.

"And you don't have any proof to prove that?"

"I don't." Rose nodded.

"Why did you lie in the previous questioning?" Lily's eyes were sharp as she shot daggers towards Rose.

"I woke up at the door of my own house the next morning and when my manager informed me that there was no proof of my presence there, why would I want to tarnish my own image? It's not like I did the massacre in that room."

"I think that's for us to figure out." Lily was getting on Rose's nerves. "Now, based on our latest investigations, I am obliged to ask you this. Do you have any idea who is Robin?"

Rose furrowed her eyebrows, "My apologies detective but how would I know who she is?"

"Well you both seem to have a taste for diamonds after all."

"Excuse me?" Rose's mask was slipping away very slowly. It wasn't that she was scared for herself. It was moreso that she was afraid Robin would get mad at this woman.

"If you are aware, Miss Veretta, on several murder sites of Robin, we have found Diamond ornaments. When traced back, they were always only linked with the victims themselves. However, when one of our very competent detectives figured out the connection between you and the victims, it can also be assumed that they were gifted to you."

Rose wanted to laugh, wasn't this way too far-fetched? "Detective, have you ever tried screenwriting?"

Lily didn't take the joke well, she glared harder at Rose, "Please answer what is being questioned."

"Well detective, I am fortunate enough to buy anything I desire for myself. I do not need men to gift me something."

"Right."

What was even going through her head?

The door of the ugly room opened, revealing Detective Marcel. Lily stood up from her desk and left the room, leaving Alex and Rose alone.

"Miss Veretta, I am very sorry about what happened with you." He began.

Rose was too pissed off to care about his condolences. She merely nodded and ignored whatever he said ahead. Finally, he asked a proper question, "Now Miss Veretta, I need you to answer this truly. Was there any bad blood between you and Sophie?"

"No detective, we were fine. The last words I remember from her are 'I really admired you.'"

Alex noted down the little detail in his notepad. "How come you remember this? In the er- video, you were not even moving."

"I couldn't move but I was listening."

"Did you happen to listen to who killed them?"

"I didn't. As soon as the men entered the room, I lost complete conscience."

Alex nodded gravely. Rose could see his hand reaching out towards hers. But she pulled back without thinking. What was comfort anyway?

No matter how much sorry someone felt for the other, they never knew what one truly went through. It was nothing more than a figure of speech.

Alex seemed to have been taken aback but he quickly masked his expressions of disappointment to sincere ones.

"We'll need you to stay here for some time longer. I hope you'll be patient with us Miss Veretta."

"Thank you, detective."

A clicking sound, signifying the lock of the door and it was empty again. Just Rose and the empty room with dull gray walls. She was suddenly more aware of her surroundings, her breathing increasing steadily. She could feel sweat accumulating on her forehead and nape. The pills were in effect already.
