CHAPTER TEN

On any normal day I would be making rounds to and from the police department. Especially on a day like this when I had a witness to prepare. My only option was to get Gumshoe to bring the witness to me.

Thirty minutes later a Ms. Sybill Haruki sat in my office. She seemed jumpy and afraid though that wasn't too uncommon among those who had just seen a murder. Or those who pretended to at least.

"I'm terribly sorry I couldn't make the trip down to the police station myself, though I thank you for your compliance."

The woman simply nodded and kept her head down.

"Now if you would please relay the events of the night of the murder, as you saw them."

"Alright. On the night of the murder I was camping out in the forest. I thought it would be fun to "rough it" a mile or so from the trail. It was nearing around 9 at night when I heard a loud scream. It was dark outside but I quickly raced to the trail were I saw two men. A long haired fellow and one man who was rather large. The long haired one raised up a large stick-like thing and proceeded to beat the other man to death. I screamed out loud and the long haired man dropped the stick and fled."

Once she had finished her testimony, I held up the defendants and the victims photos.

"And we're these the men you saw?"

She nodded "That seems about right. It was dark so it's kinda hard to tell."

I sighed. Was this literally the only witness they could find? Her testimony wouldn't hold up in court. Though telling from past experience, the judge was too stupid to tell a concrete testimony from a flimsy one.

I spent the rest of the day preparing the prosecution. I was honestly more than happy to have Phoenix Wright come retrieve me from my personal office. It made me feel... special. He wasn't his usual smiling self though, he seemed to have something on his mind. When we were finally alone in the car, I asked him what as on his mind.

"It's that guy you told me about earlier. Adien? I visited him at the detention center. There's no doubt in my mind that he's not guilty, but the case against him doesn't add up."

"Tell me about it."

"So I went to the crime scene to investigate and then things started to make less since!"

His brow furrowed in frustration. He glanced over at me and smiled softly.

"On the plus side you'll get to see me in court tomorrow.'

"So you're taking the client?"

"Yeah. I could use the money.'

"Wright, you're my boyfriend, what could you possibly need that I couldn't just get for you?"

I turned red the moment I processed what I had just said. Wright was also extremely red, but he still managed to throw me a cocky smile.

"You uh...you've never called me your boyfriend before."

I stared at the floor of my car. "I think the very fact that you picked out my underwear this morning, warrants you boyfriend status."

Wright mockingly pumped his fist, laughing softly. "Mission accomplished."

I couldn't help but laugh as well. He was such a dork sometimes.

"This calls for a celebration. I'm making us a cake."

"Phoenix, me calling you my boyfriend is not a good reason to make a cake."

"If you ask me, 'Miles Edgeworth called me his boyfriend', is the only reason to make a cake."

I rolled my eyes and laughed. "Fine. Make a cake. It better be delicious."

"I make the best cakes in the whole wide world."

That seemed like a tall tale, but I let him drive me home, raid my kitchen, and bake a cake.

I sat in the kitchen with him all the while, and in-between him asking were literally every item in my kitchen was, we discussed the case. He told me about what he found at the crime scene and I explained to him the potholes in Sybill Haruki's testimony. And once the cake was in the oven, Wright coaxed me on to the couch, wrapping his arms around me. We stayed like that in blissful silence until the timer on the oven pulled Phoenix away from me and back into the kitchen.
