Chapter 8
Saturday
"This is all very dramatic! I feel like I'm in a drama or an anime!" I giggled, clasping my hands together
"The fourth wall has been broken!" Rachel laughed, turning to watch Ayako on the film who was dressed in her Shrine Maiden uniform and chanting shinto incantations. Two men from the school were stood by her as she waved a long stick with strands of folded paper over the shine in front of her.
"I'm starting to wonder if she can do this..." Monk said to Mai, skeptically.
"I've never seen a shinto exorcism performed before." Naru added in.
"I've never seen an exorcism before." said Rachel, who jumped when Korota appeared behind her.
"Are you trying to give me a heart attack?!" Korota didn't reply, she just glared as Ayako continued her chanting.
"I pray to thee, descend and give us your divine protection." She opened her eyes, her voice quietening "That's it, your fine now."
"I'm quite impressed!"
"It was presented beautifully. " The men gasped, smiling towards Ayako. Me and Rachel groaned, pretending to vomit at the men's obvious attempts at flirting. Mai giggled, stiffening when Ayako turned to glare at her.
"I was half expecting some flashes of light, maybe some ghosts. Something out of Supernatural." Rachel laughed.
"What would you say to a party tonight in your honor?"
"Hell yes! I'll brink the WKD and we can be 'up all night to get Loki'!" I said. It was the right choice to wear a Marvel t-shirt, because the amount of references I had managed to get in to the conversation alone, let alone adding in Rachel's was endless!
"Just because I can't sing, doesn't mean I won't!" Rachel continued, quoting the recent vine she had seen.
"Druunnkeen loovvee!" We sang, in our most ridiculous singing voices earning multiple glares from everyone in the room. aside from John, who was beaming. But then again, when isn't he?
"I can't, I need to stay here for 12 hours to keep an eye on things." Ayako dismissed the men, who looked lost upon rejection.
"She's finally done," Monk yawned, stretching his arms. Mai followed suit and we turned to leave but a loud crack deafened our ears and we saw the window explode into tiny glass daggers.
"Are you okay?!" We all chorused, running to their aid.
"This man is bleeding!" John exclaimed, kneeling down to help him. Luckily they had the strength to reply. As we sent of the men in ambulances, I saw Ayako, Koroto and Masako in the building all with stern faces.
"It was an accident. But I'm not sure your exorcism worked. It couldn't have, as there are no spirits here." Masako stated and I found myself nodding in agreement. It seems she truly doesn't believe there are ghosts here, but if she doesn't and everyone else does...Is she a fake? Or is everyone else pulling us on? We're only students so even I have to admit we can be gullible at times.
"Maybe there's something too strong here for Ayako to drive away."
"My equipment would have readings." Naru huffed. Rachel looked to Mai, who was staring intently at the monitor.
"What's up? Found a ghost?" She joked, leaning to see the screen herself."
"That chair wasn't in the middle of that classroom yesterday..."
"Have you seen anyone go into that room?" Naru asked Monk who shook his head. Naru switched on the sound and replayed the recent events. I'm so glad my voice wasn't heard on the recording because I tend to sound like a man when I record my voice. The sound of a scraping chair replaced the recording and was shown on the screen as it moved by itself. Shocked gasps filled the room and a pang of fear traveled down my spine.
"What?!"
"A. Ghost?" Mai stammered.
"It looks to me like a poltergeist," Koroto nodded, her face calm albeit looking a bit full of herself. How can she be so calm after seeing that?! She's younger than Rachel and I!
"A German word meaning noisy ghost."
"Get the wurst and beer and we can party then!" Rachel regained her normal pulse rate, cracking a joke which made everyone giggle. Apart from Miss nerves of steel.
"Correct, but I don't think that's what we're dealing with. The thermostat shows the chair is cold. Poltergeist have the opposite effect on objects.
"Don't forget; Tesson's criteria." John interjected. (a/n: I couldn't find how to spell Tesson or anything about him, sorry.)
"Who?"
"A french policeman who was the first to classify poltergeist. Throwing objects, strange noises, fires and so on. We fit most of the 9 criteria that suggests there is a poltergeist present."
"You just said there wasn't one here. Make your mind up." Rachel sighed.
"But Korota, she was attacked." Mai asked, glancing towards her.
"That was just her imagination.
"Stop playing games with me!" Korota yelled at Masako and strode off to the other side of the room.
"Scrabble?" Rachel held up her phone with the app for the classic English board game.
"I will try to see if I can sense anything again." Masako left the room, her short hair swishing around her face.
"If there is a spirit here and Masako can't sense it, that would be a shock."
"Culture shock." I agreed. Everyone seemed to know her, apart from myself and Rachel, was she really that famous?
"There is no evidence there are spirits here."
"Apart from the fact you just said 'We fit most of the criteria'" My voice lowered in a mocking tone as we all glared at Naru.
"Your just a sucker for a pretty face." Koroto spat at him, crossing her arms.
"Weak game, Naru, weak game." Rachel snickered, jabbing him in the side.
"I'm just giving her the respect she deserves as she is the best in her field." He replied smugly.
"I'm more talented than she is and I haven't got an ounce of respect!" Ayako raged, her cheeks burning crimson like her lipstick.
"Uh, hello graduating foreign students with A-levels and a passing grades in Japan! Which is the most difficult language to learn when your first language is English." I sulked, waving my hands towards me and Rachel.
"And we speak other languages too!" She added, listing them off on her fingers.
"Korean?" Monk interjected, looking towards Rachel who pointed to me. He turned to face me with a shocked and impressed face.
"Sort of. A girl has to understand her biases!" I grinned. Monk smirked.
"Chinsese?" Rachel raised her hand and I held mine up half-way as to say 'sort of'.
"Tagalog?" He raised his eyebrow
"You got us there!" I laughed.
"I'm impressed, though. You girls know your stuff!"
"Psshh, yeah," We laughed, pretending to be bashful. "Too shy, too shy!" We giggled, turning back to the arguing banshees.
"What did you just say!?" Ayako screeched and a sickening crack was heard -not Naru's nose, unfortunately but the ceiling above us! We heard Masako's scream above us, echoing above the room as it gave way.
"Someone call an ambulance!" John exclaimed. The weak plaster that had boarded up the wall and Masako had lent on it, causing her to fall. She was carefully laid onto the stretcher and lifted into the ambulance.
"There's obviously a spirit here." Ayako concluded, darkly.
"Oh, the one you failed to exorcise?" Monk retorted. Rachel snapped her fingers.
"An unsuccessfully exorcised spirit is like a wounded bear-"
"Like bear, we run." Rachel mimed, her fingers mimicking running on her palm.
-"We're playing with fire." Monk finished.
"'Cause, this girl is on fire!" I sung.
"So it was Ayako's fault?" Mai asked, her eyes narrowing.
"Whoah, lets not play the blame game." I retaliated hastily. As there was no proof, I was certain there wasn't anything here, what happened to Masako was definitely an accident-no-one was with her and no-one left the room. My beliefs had yet to be swayed.
"So what do you think of this guy?" Monk asked, jabbing his thumb towards Naru who was tampering with his equipment-his one and only true love.
"Conceited and a dandy. Definitely from a rich family or has good connections."
"Great connections, look at all the techno-gear he brought to an old school!"
"I don't think the boy-wonder knows what he's doing." Monk joked. I looked towards Naru, who's back was turned, still tinkering with the equipment. His shoulders were stiff and I wondered if he heard us.
There was all to prove on this case.
