Never would I have thought that I would have been in this position. I never thought I would be one of those girls. The girls who got pregnant in high school. 

It's not like I was a slut who didn't know who the father was, it was my boyfriend, but I still never could have imagined myself being a teenage mum. Much less doing this all without my parents, who were – to say the least – unsupportive.

But my best friend was, well she hadn't been my best friend for a long because of the stuff I had done. Even now, she was supportive from a distance. She had left for a beach house her parents had a month ago now. She'll come back when she's ready. There's a lot of bad memories for her here now.

She got tipped over the edge, her little sister tragically died of cancer and the person she turned to for support ended up cheating on her with another friend of hers. All that pushed her over the edge. I've been staying with Dan, my boyfriend, ever since.

I was surprised when he stuck around when he found out that he was becoming a dad. Most guys don't. He's a keeper I think, he's got that cute little gaming thing that I have no clue about, and he's really smart too. I'm pretty sure that Melody introduced us, and I probably didn't leave the greatest impression of myself.. then again, I was five.

*Flashback*

"Dan, this is Abbey." Melody was a cheerful little girl, introducing me to her new friend. I was unhappy to say the least, that she had found a new playfriend. In hindsight, it was probably a good thing that she made friends with Dan. She was a really shy kid.

"Hi Abbey. I'm Dan." He smiled at me and I glared back, Melody's mine...You can't steal her. Trying to think of the best insult I could, I replied with,

"You look stupid. I don't like you at all."

"ABBEY!" Melody yelled at me. She hated my attitude, and I had plenty of it. I was a sassy five year old.

"Well my mum told me to never lie. So I'm not." I stormed off towards the playground where our other friend, Caitlin (or Cat as we called her) was sitting under the bridge. "Mel's talking to a boy."

"Really? That's gross." She replied. Cat had been our friend all throughout primary school but when we were all in grade ten, her family had moved interstate, taking her with them.

"I know. He's going to steal her and she won't want to be friends with us anymore."

"Don't worry, Mel's good. She won't leave us." And she never did. I pushed her away. With that, Cat and I spied on Mel and Dan all lunch time and she was disappointed to find that they hadn't become boyfriend and girlfriend by the end of the lunchtime. I was honestly relieved, but I didn't tell Mel that.

*End Flashback*

So, my five year old self wasn't the best at making first impressions, especially if they threatened to take Melody or Cat away from me. But apparently Dan forgot that the next time we talked, or he chose to look past that. It was of course ten years later.

*Flashback*

"Oh my god. That guy over there can't keep his eyes off you!" Cat practically screamed over the music. It was her goodbye party, Melody had organised it so it wasn't too big and it was held at my house in the back yard. The guy she was pointing to was drop-dead gorgeous in that slightly nerdy way. "Go over there and talk to him!"

"No! It's your party, it's not about me."

"Oh come on! Do it as a goodbye present."

"But I already got you one of those Cat."

"Stop messing around and go over there Abbey!" She gave me a shove in the right direction and I slowly made my way over to him. Up close I could see he was really tall. Damn, what this guy did to me.

"Hi..." I said awkardly.

He cracked a smile and looked down at me. "Hi. So, you needed some convincing to talk to me?"

Oh God. He saw. "Umm yes, I mean no. I mean maybe?" He laughed at that. "My name's Abbey by the way. I'm –"

"Melody's friend, I know. I'm Dan."

"Oh... So do you want to dance?"

"I'm not really a dancing –" I didn't let him finish his sentence and dragged him close to where the music was playing and people were gathered. "Oh okay then."

As soon as 'When I Was Your Man' by Bruno Mars came on, he placed his hands on my waist and I laced mine around his neck. It just felt right. When the song finished, his his hands still on my waist and mine still around his neck and he bent down and was about to kiss me when –

"ABBEY! CAKE!" That was Cat. We got a special cake made for her goodbye. Although it interrupted our moment, I was only half sad. It was cake afterall. As I walked away, Dan reached out and grabbed my arm.

"Let me give you my number first." I handed him the phone and he quickly typed it in. It wouldn't be until later that I would realise that he wrote his name as Dan Bemygirlfriend.
