Sure as hell didn't see that one coming
I sigh as I push open the doors to the building. Back to square one. It was pretty dumb to think that I'd actually have a chance of becoming the personal assistant to one of the most famous men in the world. I just kinda thought that with Stars connection-
"Please fùcking tell me you did not wear that."
Speak of the devil. I turn to face my sister, sighing inwardly at the mortified look on her face.
"Are you for real? Do you know how hard it was too get you this interview? It's not some crappy Starbucks job! I got you an actual interview with Harry goddamn Styles and you turn up dressed like you're going to college?! Are you for real Lennon? What happened to the dress I bought you?"
"Tyler locked me out of the apartment! I figured you'd be more pissed off if I just didn't show up at all!"
"I can't believe you! What the hell is wrong with you?." Star stares at me and I scowl, combing my fingers through my heavy fringe.
"Lennon." She sighs my name and raises her hand to brush my fringe away from my eyes but I quickly pull away. "You look like a sheepdog with all that hair in your eyes. I just don't get why you won't take anything seriously. This was a real chance for you."
"I did take it seriously. I turned up didn't I?"
She stares at my outfit and opens her mouth to speak before changing her mind.
"How did it go anyway?"
"Crap." I mutter. "I didn't have a chance anyway."
"Well if that was the case I wouldn't have gone to all this effort would I?" Star smiles at me ruefully.
"I know. I'm sorry, but seriously? Me as Harry Styles PA? I can't even remember to put my clothes in the wash, never mind try and organise a world famous pop stars life."
She grins as she looks at my heavy fringe and kohl lined eyes.
"God Lennon, I wish you'd let me give you a makeover. You know that Joan Jett went out of fashion like 30 years ago, right?"
"Joan Jett never goes out of fashion." I say defensively.
"I'll take the dress back for you." I sigh after a minutes pause.
"Which dress?"
"The one you spent £150 on for my interview?"
"Oh, just keep it, you never know when you'll need it." She looks at me thoughtfully. "What are we going to do with you Lennon? You're 19, no job, nowhere to live- yet again- a college dropout. You need to grow up."
I bite back a snappy comment. She's just concerned about me. In her world being a PA to a superstar is run of the mill, one of her best friends is a top Hollywood make up artist, those sort of jobs are just normal to her.
I study her, taking in everything. The perfect make-up. Her expensive designer clothes.
"Why are you staring at me?"
"I'm just thinking. Remember that summer that we went to Italy?"
Our parents had taken all five of us in a battered camper van, drove across Europe and we'd spent the whole summer in a huge house on the Italian coast. Thinking back, I'm not sure if they just squatted there. The house looked as if it had been deserted for years, dad sealed one room off because the ceiling was damp and nearly caving in.
"Yeah. We spend all summer on the beach. And we all convinced you that the back bedroom was haunted." She giggles.
"You dared me to spend a night alone in there!"
"Yeah... But I came in in the middle of the night! I couldn't sleep. I knew you'd be terrified but you'd stay there because you're so bloody stubborn."
I smile at the memory. Star crept in the room in the middle of the night and curled up to me. She left just before morning, so that all of our siblings would think I'd actually done it alone.
I can remember her stroking my hair to get me to sleep and telling me that it wasn't real, ghosts don't exist.
"Everything was so easy then." I sigh. "What happened?"
"We grew up." Star says simply, tucking a strand of my hair behind my ear. "Well I did. And it's time you did the same Lennon. We're not the weird little hippy kids whose parents are stoners anymore. We're adults and you need to start acting like it."
I roll my eyes, the moment has gone now.
"Do you need somewhere to stay?"
"No, I'm staying with Glen."
Star groans.
"Please Lennon, just think about going back to college or-"
"Yeah yeah yeah. I gotta go."
Suddenly she leans forward and pulls me into a hug and I catch the whiff of her perfume. One squirt of it is probably more expensive than my entire outfit.
"Harry Styles is really hot in the flesh isn't he?" She says.
I shrug before answering.
"Yeah I guess so."

Glen is watching Judge Judy when I get in.
I've never met someone as obsessed with trashy American tv shows as he is. I walk in and wait for the barrage of questions about meeting Harry, one of Glens absolute biggest celebrity crushes, but he holds up his hand to shush me and doesn't even acknowledge my presence until Judge Judy has delivered her verdict.
I watch him, trying not to laugh. He's watching it as if Judy is passing judgement on him and her words will impact the rest of his life.
"Ok." He turns to me slowly. He has a slightly annoying habit where he doesn't stop watching the program and you're not allowed to speak until the end credits have finished rolling. His last boyfriend used to get so pissed because apparently Netflix and chill with Glen is watching a movie in complete silence and ignoring the dirty looks he shoots you for eating popcorn too loudly.
Finally though he turns fully towards me and grins excitedly.
"How did it go? Is he an actual sex beast in the flesh? Did the research I helped you with pay off?"
"Research?" I scoff. "Glen, you gave me a list of your top ten 'Larry' fanfics. That's hardly interview prep."
"Yes but at least you went into the interview room knowing the truth."
"He's not gay Glen."
"You keep telling yourself that darling. So, come on, spill."
I tell Glen about the crappy interview. When I get to the bit where I told Harry the joke he starts laughing.
"So... Basically you met Harry Styles and called him a poo."
"That about sums it up." I mutter moodily. "And Star is moaning that I'm not trying hard enough-"
"Stop whinging you miserable bitch, I'd kill for my sister to be able to introduce me to a celebrity. The closest I get with my sister is meeting Gary from IT who was once on 'Who wants to be a millionaire?' Anyway, shut up, storage hunters is coming on."
He turns back to the tv and I laugh laying back in my chair. Suddenly my phone begins to buzz. I groan, wondering what she's going to tell me off about now.
"Hey Star-"
"Tell me how amazing I am." She demands abruptly.
"Okayyyy... You're amazing Star."
"Damn right I am, despite you totally fücking up that interview- you neglected to tell me the bit where you called actual Harry Styles a poo I notice-"
"I didn't I just told him a joke! Why-"
"Shut up a minute." She sounds like she's about to burst with excitement and I get a vague feeling of what she's about to tell me. "You're through to the final three candidates Lennon!"
"What?!" I half shriek.
Glen glares over and makes a point of turning the tv up.
"I have to be honest with you, you weren't on the short list at all but Suzy liked you-"
"Who's Suzy?"
There's a pause.
"Are you kidding me Lennon? You spend 15 minutes in there are didn't even introduce yourself to everyone?!" She sighs exasperatedly. "Suzy is the blonde, she's a good friend. Anyway, she said she can imagine working with you-"
"What about Harry? What did he say?"
"Well apparently he wasn't bothered. He seemed a bit keen on some redhead but Suzy thinks that's only because she was really hot." I think back to the bitchy looking girl in the waiting room. "But overall he didn't care either way. Lydia and Suzy drew up the short list and you were Suzys choice. To be honest I think she's only done it because she owes me a favour-"
"Well thanks."
"Well come on Lennon, even you'll admit you hardly blew them away..."
There's a pause as I try to absorb everything.
"So what's next?"
"The final interview stage, with Harry's management. He won't be there."
My heart sinks. I have no chance.
"Who else is on the short list?"
"I don't know, I'm going to find out. And Lennon?"
"Yeah?"
"Please put in a bit of effort this time! You can't keep treating life like-"
I let her say the same old stuff as my mind wanders.
Working for a pop star has never been something I even considered. After I dropped out of college I just figured I'd tour with Tyler's band and then just drift on from there.
Now I've got the chance to work for Harry Styles.
Funny how life goes.
