Tongue Tied
WITH A CONFIDENT STRIKE, Mai walked inside the hotel where the restaurant was located. She was ready for her date. Thanks to her friends' encouragement, she felt like she could set the world on fire.
Mai looked at her surroundings and gasped in awe. The architecture of the lobby was modern and elegant in grey and gold tones. A few sofas, on her left, looked so pretty she felt like they belonged in a mansion, but they were probably uncomfortable. She saw business people chatting among themselves, as she walked beside them. Three ladies were sitting on the uncomfortable couch and judging by their hand movement were gossiping. As she walked toward the counter for information, she couldn't help but see two men cleaning a chandelier. One was at the bottom, probably to stabilize the stool. He had short dark hair and was wearing a complete suit with a bow, probably his uniform. She watched him as his mouth moved and looked at the one he was talking to. Her gaze trailed to the other boy who was on top of the stool.
He had short brown hair and a smile plastered his face, probably from a joke his colleague made. He was cleaning the crystal balls carefully one by one. He mustn't have been a lot older than her. She felt like she had seen the guy at the top of the stool before, but she just shrugged it off. She wasn't here to play detective, she was here for a date.
As her gaze left the two boys, she nearly collided with a man in front of her. Shocked, she apologized and stopped, lost, midway to the information counter. What was she doing here? She felt disconnected, everything around her screamed expensive and luxury, from the uncomfortable couch to the two employees in cut-tailored uniform polishing the crystal balls.
With her outfit, which was chosen by her friends, and a bit of acting, she could pretend to belong here. She may fool people with her physique but her personality would give her away.
She wondered what kind of man her date was. She fidgeted with the hem of her purse as she wondered why he would choose this hotel for their date. Did he want to show off his wealth? When Mai really thought about it, she didn't know much about her date. She knew that his name was Tyler, that he was an entrepreneur, and that he was his boss' son.
Wanting to make a good impression and not wanting to let down her boss, she agreed to go on a date with her son. It was plain stupid to accept. But now it was too late. If she didn't show up, it would cause more harm. Stuck in this situation, she had no better solution to enjoy the date. Who knows maybe Tyler would be a nice guy.
She arrived at the information counter and asked the nicely dressed woman where was the restaurant. The lady politely told her that it was on the 15th floor. Mai smiled and thanked the lady before walking towards the elevator.
She clicked on the up button on the elevator. As she waited she saw a crowd gathering around a tall man with sunglasses. She scrunched her eyebrows not wanting to be in the tall man's shoes always having people follow you 24/7. A small noise coming from the elevator was heard which draw Mai's attention. She slowly entered the cabin and pushed on the button 15. If she was quick enough she would be alone in the elevator so she could pep talk herself out loud once more before the date.
The doors were closing and Mai sighed at the fact that she would be alone. Suddenly a hand stopped to door from closing and a guy entered the elevator. A bit shocked by the guy's presence she took a deep breath and gave herself a silent pep talk instead of out loud.
She was standing in the back of the cabin, her shoulders slumped on the cold wall of the elevator. The guy in front of her was a bit taller than her and was wearing a black suit and black pants; seeing the hotel's customers, it could be literally anyone. Her focus went back on her date and forgot about the man in front of her.
She was so focused on her date and trying to please Tyler so she wouldn't get fired that she didn't notice the weird sounds the elevator was making. Suddenly the elevator started to rattle. Mai's heart dropped as what she feared the most happened; the elevator stopped moving.
Mai went to reach the emergency call button, but the guy had already pressed it. He turned and told her, "it's alright it shouldn't be too long."
She recognized him as the guy who was cleaning the chandelier's crystal balls. She took the opportunity to check him out since she couldn't earlier. He was tall and slim. His black suit jacket was tight and she could clearly see his white shirt underneath. His pants were straight which enhanced his long legs. His arms looked rough and Mai was surprised to see a small elephant on one of his fingers. She wondered what it meant. She had found out with time that tattoos were a representation of someone's soul.
The guy cleared his throat, "Well the only thing we have left to do is to wait." Mai nodded and sighed.
