Chapter 25
I know what I am doing might seem a little crazy but I can't be stopped at this point. It's the middle of the night, an owl hoots and I tighten the drawstrings of my black hoodie. After that dream or memory, whatever it was I have to go to the police station right now. I have to talk to detective Adams. The images of Mr Bavis still spin around in my mind. A huge part of me is out of this planet. How can this be my reality? He took away her life, he abused his power and now his trying to do it again with Skyler?
I unlock the front door and close it gently right behind me, I begin to run. My lungs and legs burn from my lack of activity from actually running. I can not let it stop me, but this is not the movies. So I run my footsteps patter, later I am panting. Yep running is not for me. Mazin has to get up.
“Hello”, he groggy answers his phone.
“Hey it's me” I take a deep breathe before going on.
“I know it's late but its an emergency”, I rest my hands on my knees.
“Uh where are you, what is going on?" I can hear Mazin shift around in his bed.
“Still in my neighbourhood but I need to go to the police station,” this time I hear a door bang shut
“okay cool I am on my way”, he yawns.
Mazin's car pulls up and in I go in. I buckle up and he begins to drive. Without asking questions his too quiet probably tired. At this point I am the annoying friend. “Sorry for waking you up” I say softly.
“It's fine, why we going to the station anyways what's up?”
“Mr Bavis he definitely has something to do with Ava's death honestly think he is... you know”
“Yeah I know”, his one hand tiredly drives while the other sits on his thigh. “Get the man into jail”, he finally says.
Even though Mazin drives way slower than usual we make it. He parks into the fairly empty parking lot. You need me to come in with you?
“No but can you maybe drop me off?" I scratch the back of my head
“Yes”, he reclines his seat please take your time” he sheepishly chuckles. “Sorry, but you woke me up at the best part of my dream. I was getting married to Nia Long.”
“Oh wow celebrity crush?” I smirk
“Maybe he says now go away let me sleep.” I close the door. In my slippers and plain black hoodie I walk all the way to the entrance. A policewoman with braids tied neatly in a high bun eyes me up and down.
“Not again”, she sighs and pinches the bridge of her nose “These kids really need to stop taking them drugs.”
“I'm not high or anything. I want to see detective Adams my name is Nora-”
“Grey”, she completes the sentence for me. “Soon as I heard detective Adams name I connected the dots. Listen your here way to early he comes in at 6PM.”
Can't you call him and say it's an emergency? I plead this is a matter of urgency.
“Uh no, do I look like want to deal with him now at this time?” She looks at her wrist, checking out her watch.
“Well then I guess I will wait." And that's what I do. I walk back into Mazin's car, his eyes are shut tight and his hands are tucked under his armpits.
When the sun slowly rises and Mazin opens up the windows, I look directly at my phone its 6:45 he must be here.
I rush in the station again and this time the lady with the braids is not the one standing behind the desk but its a man with a stash and hair that's balding
“Hi”, his eyebrows knit up. His eyes travel down to my slippers.
“I want to see detective Adams it's an emergency.”
“You must be Nora?”
“Yes” I reply quickly
“Alright wait here I'll go get him for you. I guess being close with the deceased in this case has it's benefits."
Adams walks in this time for the very first time his wearing a dark brown coat.
“Did you just wake up?" He asks with concern lacing his tone. I chuckle, “I remember something from that night” I?Immediately his eyebrows raise. Go on he takes out his notebook. I tell him everything from the bizarre look that Mr Bavis gave Ava and I to the way he smelled that night. To even the intense fear that I felt that night. It almost takes back to that night, the hairs on my neck stand and a breeze slides up my spine.
This is almost unreal, a part of me is out of my body floating around trying to make sense of all of this.
Detective Adams closes his notebook. “Are you going to arrest him now?” I ask with my skin crawling. “Well we will bring him in for questioning.” “Questioning is that all!” I take a step back. “His clearly the killer, I mean come on Adams I yell what about the pictures I showed you?"
They match Ava's he simply says I want to grab him by his jacket and push him to the edge of earth maybe to even the core of the earth.
“Look I am not the law there are certain protocols I have to follow." I nod my head but I am still not fully understanding him. And it doesn't settle the lava that bubbles within me. BAVIS. IS. THE. KILLER. Someone arrest that man.
----
There are moments when I wake up in the middle of night forgetting that Ava is gone. It's for a spilt second and then my brain quickly injects all the memories and I say “oh”. Skyler did not show up today at school I don't blame her. I know detective Adams told me not to tell anyone what I told him but I can't keep what I know to myself it will burn me alive. When I told Skyler what I had remembered she was stunned. Too stunned to the point where she even hung up on me.
Next up I told Mazin, he was the definition of shock still is has he cleans the paint brushes. Ava's mural is complete. Here in Mrs Morgan's classroom, marigold and sunflowers cover the wall
with a message in the middle. Her fierceness is never forgotten.
Mason has been quiet this whole day, lost in his mind. We skipped English class today only because passing by Mr Bavis's class made my stomach do cartwheels and backflips. When I told Ameria she cried on my shoulders. A part of me always thought that knowing the truth would be reliving but instead it's painful. It has opened another wound or maybe it has deepened the wound that was there. “Ava would love this”, Ameria sneaks her arms around my waist. “She would especially all the colours, orange, red, yellow and pink. All of them showcase who she was.”
“Yep”, Ameria wipes away a small tear, but soon giggles. “Remember in 9th grade when she came dressed as a chicken for Halloween.”
“Oh my gosh”, I giggle. “She went around class making chicken sounds. Bro all the teachers were so mad especially Mr."
Ameria stops herself and I know she was about to say Mr Bavis's name. “You think he hurt her back then?"
I shut my eyes tight and sigh, “I hope not” I whisper. “Hey” simutalously we turn and we meet with AJ's complexion. “Hi we both say back. “Ameria can we talk?", he looks past me to Ameria. “She sighs I have nothing to say to you.“
“but-”
“Anyways we have to go”, Ameria unwraps her arms from my waist and grabs my wrist pulling me along as we walk out the door. “Honestly still not ready to deal with him,” Ameria says. “Maybe one day we could be friends but not today and I know his going to try his best to get me back but not today.” She goes on and just as she finishes her sentence the bell rings. “Thank god this day is over avoiding AJ and Bavis was draining.” Walking to our lockers from a far distance the clicking of multiple cameras and patting more like thudding footsteps stop me from opening up my locker
“what is that sound?” Ameria looks back at me from her locker.
“Bro I don't know", I unlock my locker but the clicking turns into snapping and it only gets worse with the other students getting out of class. The halls are filled and from the what is that sound questions I hear from other students it's evident Ameria and I are not the only two student who hear the sound.
“Attention students”, the speakers blares and I know its Principal Judith. Ameria's eyes find mine she immediately rolls her eyes reminding me off how dismissive principal Judith was. “No student is to exist Willow High.“
“What the hell are being kept hostage?” one student says. “I repeat no student is to exist those doors, this for your own safety.”
“We heard you!” another student yells. We better not be practising for some fire drill.” Ameria steps away from her locker and stands next to me. The buzzing of conversation begins, some students even begin taking videos and pictures probably for their Instagram pages.
my phone buzzes in my pocket.
From Mazin: What do you think is going on
Me: Bro idk but I wanna go home
From Mazin: You can say that again dude.
“Oh my gosh! the news is outside" a disembodied yet high pitched voice yells and that stirs the students even more. My eyes land on Ameria's phone as she opens up a link from a group chat. The link leads her to YouTube page. The video plays and right at our school doors. Stand an army of reporters ready to burst into our school with their questions. A woman with a mic bigger than her hand and black sleeked hair that shines the whole time as she speaks points aggressively at the school door, pressing on the door as if one finger can open it. The reporter next to her, with big framed glasses that cover his whole face speaks with not only words but his hands too. One minute he points at the school the next he places his one hand wide open like something may fall from the sky into his hands. I can't hear a single thing these reporters say, but the tornado in me begins to form. From the pit of my stomach, the tornado grabs a hold of all toady's lunch, ready to whirl it around.
“I think I might puke” I tell Ameria she immediately exits out the video. “You can say that again”, she begins to fiddle with her golden necklace. My phone buzzes again ands I immediately want to tell Mazin that I want to puke.
However its not a text from Mazin
Skyler: I'm sorry but I had to.
Confusion crawls up my face and sits at my eyebrows Before I can decipher what she means the buzzing conversation is no longer stagnant, but now student make their way to the doors. I look back at Ameria who already has her eyes on mine, she sighs shortly. “Well the only way to find out what going on is to join the crowd.” She grabs my hand, giving it a squeeze and we follow along. The tornado within me gets larger. Something tells me that this is
going to be a mess.
