Chapter 22
Tam POV:
I didn't bother knocking before pushing open the door, regret coursing through me. Linh was under her duvet, crying. She didn't notice me come in.
I brushed some balled up tissues aside and sat beside her, lifting my feet up onto the bed. I grabbed her shoulder gently, pulling her into a cuddle, sighing. She sniffled. "Are you n-not sad that Biana is missing? Don't you have a crush on her?" She asked, looking into my eyes. My features stiffened.
"Yeah, I am sad..." I replied, trying to look at least a tiny bit guilty. I'm not, though. I'm not guilty about saving my sister. It's all gonna go to waste if her mind breaks, though.
"Linh, c'mon, get up. Depression isn't gonna bring Biana back." I said, making her sit up. She hung her head and wrapped her arms around me. We sat in eerie silence for a minute. Eventually, she sat up, her face bright with an idea. "Tam, you're a genius! I shouldn't stay here lounging around, I should go and find her!" She exclaimed, throwing off the covers and going to her closet to get dressed.
I took her spot in bed, cause, yeah, I can😏
She put on a turquoise tunic and black leggings, finally turning to me after she did her hair and makeup. "Alright, let's go get the old crew, 'cause we have to find the best person to help us find Biana!" She chirped, and I braced myself for the name she was about to say. "Sophie!"
Now that I think of it, maybe it isn't such a bad idea, maybe we can find Sophie, and I can benefit, too. I pushed the covers off and light leaped to Everglen with Linh.
Linh POV:
One thing you wouldn't have known, is that the walk from the gates of Everglen to the front door is actually pretty far. I didn't really care, especially since it gave me an opportunity to ask my brother the question that has been nagging me.
"Tam? Can I ask you a question?" I questioned, hooking my arm in his. We had a time when we were younger where we grew apart for a while. It was mostly me, and that was foolish, especially since it was over a girl. I apologized, and now we're as close as ever.
"Go ahead." He responded, slowing down a bit. "The day before Biana went missing," I paused, afraid I might not be able to finish the sentence without crying. I took a deep breath, calming my nerves. "I heard you and her fighting outside. Why were you fighting?"
For a moment, his calm filter flickered away, showing a bit of panic in his eyes. He looked away, unlooping out arms and tugging on his bangs. I want to say that's a nervous habit, but he does it all the time, and it's rare to see any signs of nervousness coming from him.
He has four moods:
-Angry
-Emo
-agitated
-and calm
He only developed the last one after we supposedly 'defeated' the Neverseen. As much as I hate to admit it, we need Sophie. She was a good friend, and there wasn't anyone I could talk to about her. Keefe ran away, and despite me and Biana's hard efforts to get him out of bed when he was here, he never budged.
"Well," Tam finally replied, wrapping a stiff arm around my shoulder, "Dex helped me look at the registry, and our inception date is soon. We were trying to set up a party for you, y'know, like humans do?" He finished, though he seemed unsure. I wanted to press, asking him why he was acting weird, except we were finally nearing the doors.
We walked the rest of the way in silence.
When we knocked, a red-faced Alden opened the door. We both hugged him, and asked if he was okay. "No reason to worry," he replied, like always.
Alden showed us the way to Fitz's room, and I assumed Tam knew where it was, because of all the sleepovers Biana would host to lighten the mood. On the way, we passed the familiar door that lead to her room, which me and Alden both glanced sadly at.
We reached Fitz's room, and Alden left us knocking on the door. "Go away, I don't wanna talk..." Fitz uttered from inside, followed by a groan. Tam entered anyway, suddenly eager to go with my idea, and we both knew that Fitz would be the hardest to persuade.
Tam stayed next to the door, but I went and sat on his bed, where he was face planted in his pillow. "Fitz?" I placed my hand on his back, which caused him to stir. But he still didn't move. My voice sounded a bit like Della's, so maybe he thought that I was her.
"Fitz," Tam said it this time, in his angsty, Emo, dark voice. Fitz turned and sat up. His red face shocked me a bit, as I had in never seen him in such a vulnerable state. His crying was justified, of course, by the fact that his sister was missing.
"Oh, hi guys..." He mumbled, turning away. I got straight to the point.
"We're going to find Biana. Sitting around crying isn't gonna get her back." I said, straight-faced, my tone strong. I included him in the 'we', because he has no reason to say no. But he knew something else was coming. "What's the catch?" He wondered aloud. I sucked in a breath through my teeth.
"The best way to find her... Is by getting Sophie to help us..." I regretted the words as soon as I began speaking them, but we needed him to help us, since he probably knew her better than me or Tam, maybe even Dex. His tantrums were an unlucky bonus.
He jumped to his feet, any trace of lingering sadness vanishing. He had a crinkle between his eyebrows, and a frown had automatically placed itself on his face. "We can't do that! We all know that Sophie is a no-good weirdo that can't do anything right except endangering us!" He argued, and I looked down and shook my head slowly.
"Biana didn't think that," I persuaded, trying to bring his temper down AT LEAST a couple notches.
It did not work.
"Biana is GONE! I don't care what she thinks anymore. The Neverseen killed her, what else is there to it?!" He screamed, his face red. I looked to Tam for help. "I can sense her shadow," he tried. It got Fitz's attention. "I don't know where she is, but she's definitely somewhere, and alive. I know Sophie has made some mistakes, but maybe it's time to forgive her."
Fitz sighed, sinking back down into the bed. After a horrible silence, he spoke the words we came here for. "I'm in."
"Good," Tam said, moving outside the door, "let's go get Dex."
Then it really sank in. We were going to see Sophie. She was gonna help us, and come back with us, and everything would be okay. Little did I know, it wasn't gonna be that easy...
Another one done! Istg, I'm running out of things to say at these end notes. Anyway...
