Chapter 10
Before:
...when the girl of my dreams stepped through the door, holding a bunch of shopping bags and laughing with a blonde girl. Shopping was not Sophie's thing. I spent a couple of seconds staring at her, but then I realized, SHE WASN'T SUPPOSED TO SEE ME! Oops, too late for that thought. She turned her pretty head around her eyes moving straight...
...past me. I sighed a sigh of relief as they took their order and sat down. I was panicking for nothing. I remembered that I got a new wig and contacts when I left, my new hair color being navy blue with turquoise eyes. I looked normal to her. I didn't want to look normal to her. I wanted to look like the love of her life. The man she would see at the altar when she walked up the isle on her wedding day.
I realized as I stood up and discarded my empty coffee cup that that might never happen. That I might just have to settle for being her friend. That hurt me, but I still walked out the cafe door with a longing glance back towards the girl I love.
Sophie POV:
I noticed a guy take an almost sad glance at me as he left. And, oh, did that make my mind wonder. Did he like me? Did he think I was gay for Irena? I internally laughed at the thought. Irena was kinda the touchy type though, which earned me quite a few shocks on our shopping date. But I still got some cute stuff. I took a sip of my Skittles frappucino and zoned back in to our conversation of boys. "...and this one guy, we were gonna have-" Thank goodness for the hot waiter that interrupted that sentence.
"Hey, cuties. Can I get your numbers?" The guy asked, flashing a smile. The guy had on the normal outfit for guys with his job, but I noticed he had a black cloth on his arm with... The Neverseen symbol on it. "Of cours-" Irena began, but I quickly stopped her. "I can do better." I said with a smirk to make it believable. "When does your shift end?" He checked the time on a clock hanging above us. "In 10 minutes." I picked up all our bags and my drink. "Great. Meet us outside." I winked, pulled Irena up, and ran out the door.
I channeled all my energy to my legs as I ran up the stairs to our dorm. Once the door was locked, I dropped our bags and turned towards Irena. "What were you thinking!?!" I said between fast breaths, my panicked body trembling. They weren't supposed to be back. They were supposed to be gone. "What did I do?" Irena's puzzled face morphed into worry as she realized the mood she was supposed to be feeling.
I realized Irena wouldn't know about the Neverseen. Her and her family were banished from the lost cities when she was 3, but her dad managed to get a well paying job and become a millionaire. Her brother also became a TikTok star and earned a million dollars from each reel.
"Irena," I sighed as I recounted the important details of the Neverseen and told her the plan. I ruffled through my suitcase and pulled out Hope (don't ask how I got it through security). I took a moment to do the movements Ro taught me, a smirk on my face. Then I put on its holster under my coat and slipped it in, ignoring Irena's questions as I pulled her out the door.
The guy walked out of the cafe, a smirk playing on his lips as he spotted us. Nothing notable happened as we brought him to an alleyway. Quickly, Irena stunned him and I held him against the wall, Hope slightly piercing his neck. He regained his consciousness, and realized the position he was in. Our weakness? We had no idea what his ability was, or if he even had one.
Suddenly, a light flashed in front of my face temporarily blinding me. When I could see again, I suddenly wished I couldn't. The guy had me in the same position I had him in before, the only exception being the shimmery blue force field surrounding us. Irena, who was outside the barrier, started to approach. "NO!" I shouted, and she stepped back, but my warning only brought more pain as the guy shoved Hope further into my neck.
"Hey, Moonlark. Long time no see. I guess Forkle forgot to teach you manners, because it's not polite to try and kill an old buddy." The guys neck was bleeding, but not as heavily as mine was going to if I made it out of this alive. I could hear faint shouts outside the force field, but I couldn't decifer any words. "Oh, can't you remember me?" The guy asked, his evil grin hardening in my memory. "It's your old friend, Ruy."
"R-ruy?" I rasped. "You're s-supposed to be dead. And your a-ability isn't supposed to work." Ruy scowled, the knife pressing deeper into her skin. He didn't notice, but his force field went away. Irena was still paralyzed in fear. I got an idea, though. I kneed him in the crotch, which made him press the knife really deep into my neck, but police sirens sounded near us, which made him run away. I collapsed onto the ground, Irena crouching next to me. I was able to mutter some last instructions. "Ambulance. J-jumped. D-dagger in m-my suitcase." And then I passed out with nothing but hope that she understood.
That was hard to write. But fun (cuz I'm evil).
