Chapter 9

•one week later•

"Is she still mad at you?" Zack's head nodded towards Kylie. I looked at her. Her pixie hair covered by the black hood of her hoodie. Beatrice was sitting beside her on the same table. I noticed Alexander sitting two tables away, watching them as well. "I am not sure." I shrugged. "I don't get her, really." He added.

"Believe me, you will need more than a few weeks to get Kylie." I looked at him. "I just thought she liked me." He picked up a handful of fries. "She just thinks you attacked me that night." I watched him stuff the fries into his mouth. "Do you?" He muffled. "Do I what?" I asked as he chewed. "Think I attacked you?" He said, mouth half full.

I wasn't completely sure, yet. The dreams I have been having over the last week, were terrible. That attacker would always show up. The only thing that is clear about him were his intense eyes. That night was still blurry and out of focus. That's exactly what I told officer Alkaline, when I went to the station last week.

"I know that you wouldn't do such thing." I said. "I really wouldn't." He smiled. "I know, Zack. That's why I told officer Alkaline that you had nothing to do with it." I smiled back. "Right, I just wonder how your parents knew that you were supposed to be with me that night? You told them?" He asked.

He's right. I didn't. The only person who knew was Kylie. I couldn't believe she told them that Zack might be my attacker. "I didn't." I mumbled as I looked back at Kylie, who was listening to Beatrice talking.

                             ~~~~~~~~~~~
Everything seemed much darker around me. My breath was slow and harder to get out of my chest. The room looked as if someone was shooting everywhere. They didn't have a good aim. It was my room and Kylie's. The beds were destroyed. The mattresses were filled with bullets. Kylie was laying in her own bed. Bullets were a part of her fragile body. Blood was everywhere. "I told you, we all have to pay, Jane!" The same cold voice said, echoing around me. The whole room started to spin. "You killed me!" Kylie's dead body stood in front of me and screamed.
I woke up, drenched in cold sweat. The room was dark. I looked at Kylie's bed to find her fine. Sleeping, actually. I sighted as my breath got back to its normal beat. I got out of bed, knowing sleep was a long way out of my eyes. I slipped into a pair of boots. I pulled on a black jacket over my grey sweater and headed out.
I knew that walking out in the dark, all alone wasn't such a good idea, I just needed some fresh air. Cold wind blew against my face. I sat on a bench by a street lamp. The campus seemed to be deserted. The only sound around me was the blowing wind. My nightmares were getting worse everyday. I seemed to miss my boring life. When no one paid attention to the nerdy girl.
They all just liked her hot bold best friend. I didn't like that me and Kylie weren't talking again. I also didn't like the fact that she might be the one who told my parents, that Zack could have attacked me. I didn't like that our differences were pulling us apart now after all these years. I truly loved Kylie. I wanted us to stay friends forever. I wanted the fantasies we used to dream about as kids to come true. That our kids would be best friends as well.
Time changes souls, I guess I learned that a little too late than I should have.
                              ~~~~~~~~~

"Did you tell mom and dad about me meeting Zack that night?" I blurted out as my thoughts drifted from my notes. I looked up at her. She was looking back. "So?" I crossed my arms, waiting for her answer. "What if I did? It was for your own good." She said. I laughed with sarcasm. "You think it's funny?" She raised an eyebrow. "We're not supposed to tell our parents, anything. Remember that?" I got out of bed.

"I was trying to protect you, Jane." She said. "Then, I could have protected you by saying that you got out of bed that night Tilly got attacked?!" I came back at her. Her face fell. "You think I am dumb, Kylie? I heard you get out of bed that night. I know what you did to Tilly!" I furiously said. She came closer to me. I gulped. The last time she was that close to me and angry, I ended up with a bruise.

"I didn't tell you to lie for me, Jane. You did it on your own!" She slowly said. "I care about you!" I yelled. "I don't need you!" She yelled back. My heart ached. How could she say such words? She sighed. My eyes were tearing up. "Stay in your business, Jane." She added before leaving the room. I let my tears fall as I dropped onto the ground. My sobs were silent but they seemed to be killing me slowly.

My arm hit a pair of boot as I turned in my sleep. I rubbed my eyes, sitting up straight. Light was pouring into the room. It was a Saturday morning. Kylie's bed was empty. I wondered if she ever came home the other night. My wonder died as I recalled last night. I needed coffee.

I grabbed the pair of boots and pulled it on. I got up and slid into my jacket. I walked out of the room. I looked at the door as I locked it.

"YOU WILL PAY!!"

The words were written in a bad handwriting, in pure red. My heart started to race as I hit the wall opposite from our door. I could have never imagined that the attacker knew where I was staying. It occurred to me that I wasn't safe anywhere, anymore. I clutched my chest in fear as I looked around the corridor, searching for anyone.

The corridor was empty, not one person was passing by. I gulped as I rushed out of the building. I ran to the only person, I knew would care. My breath was heavy as I knocked upon the door. This time, he opened the door. "Jane?" He stared in surprise. "He k-knows." I panted. I caught my breath. "I don't understand, come in." He wasn't following.

He had to follow. If the attacker knew where I was staying, I had no time left. He could just come in and kill me in my sleep. I sat on the sofa, my head hurting. "Hey, come down. Here." He handed me a cup of water. I took two sips and turned to him. "The attacker knows where I am staying!" I said.

"What?" He looked even more shocked. "I found a message, just before I came. Right on the door." The words seemed to choke me. The air seemed to be so little. Either, my lungs were too small or the air wasn't enough. "Are you sure?" He asked. "It said that I will pay! The same words he told me, the same words in the message. It's all connected to the same person!" I said. "Okay, come down. We will figure this out." He held my shoulders with his big hands.

"You don't understand, we have to find him." I panted, having difficulty breathing. "Jane, breath. I do understand. We will find him. Please, just breath." He nodded at me, rubbing my arms. He started to breath slowly and I followed.  "Good." He gave me a soft smile.

My phone buzzed in my pocket. I got it out, with shaking hands. I clicked the message, I just got open. "I told you that revenge is sweet, Jane. I got someone here, you might wanna have back. Come to the address, I just sent you, alone, or say goodbye to dear childhood bestie." The message left me frozen in place.
