Chapter 6
I spent the whole day after Zack dropped me off at my place, trying to reach Kylie. I sent her endless messages and called her a thousand times. She didn't respond at all. I didn't get much sleep even with my room's door locked. My nerves were on fire, as I kept on thinking about the message and Kylie. Maybe the officer was right, maybe it is just some kind of a joke.
I woke up the next day, struggling to get myself out of bed. My whole body felt heavy and tired. I washed my face and teeth in the bathrooms, I tried my best to stay standing while showering. I went back to my room. Pulled a pair of sweats along with a dark hoodie. I pulled my wet hair up into a ponytail. I took my books and made my way to the class.
Throughout the class, I ignored Zack and struggled to keep up with my professor. "So, we're not gonna talk?" He walked beside me. I sighted. "I am sorry I lied, Jane. I wanted to tell you." He shrugged. "Why didn't you?" I asked. "I couldn't even talk to you. You were very hard to approach." He explained. I pursed my lips as I looked at him. "Can I have a chance? I really like hanging out with you." He smiled.
I sighted, looking away as we entered the cafeteria. Alexander caught my eyes. I skipped to him, leaving Zack behind. "Hey." I said. He looked up at me. "What do you want?" He crossed his arms. "Where is Kylie?" I asked. "She doesn't want to see you." Beatrice said. "Why not?" I asked, confused. "For fuck's sake, stop playing innocent, Jane." He stood up. He was taller than me. I had to look up at his face.
"We know you leaked that video!" Beatrice said with fury. I gulped. But, I didn't. I didn't leak anything. I got the video like everyone else. "That's not true! I got it like all of you!" I said. "I know Kylie would never do that to me! So you better say how the fuck you did it, you bitch!" My arm felt numb as he grabbed it hard. I tried to free myself from his hold.
"Get your hands off her!" Zack fired back at Alexander, freeing my arm. "Stay out of this, Lakes!" Alexander yelled at his face. My eyes were tearing up. My arm was starting to hurt. "We will just walk away. You better let us, got it?" Zack whispered. They stared at each other for a couple of minutes. Alexander fell back into his chair. Zack took my hand and walked me away.
I couldn't help but cry. My arm was hurting and my face as well. I couldn't believe that Kylie would think that I can do this. Even to her. It killed me the most how she didn't trust me at all. "Hey, it's okay. I am sorry." Zack hugged me again. "Does your arm hurt?" He asked. I nodded into his chest. "Come on, you gotta eat something." He pulled back. I wiped my wet cheeks.
Sitting somewhere under a tree, we were both staring at the ground. I had only taken one bite from the ham sandwich, Zack got me earlier. "What happened back there?" He broke the silence. "They think I leaked that video." I mumbled. Kylie knew very well that no matter how bad she treated me, I still stayed. I always stayed.
"Did you?" He asked. I looked at him, eyes wide. How could he even accuse me of such thing? Kylie is my best friend. My only friend. "No!" I demanded. "Alright, of course not." He looked away. I sighted. "I think Alexander doesn't believe she did anything. He thinks I edited it somehow." I looked ahead. "Whoever did this, wants you and Kylie to fight. You need to talk to her. Tell her you didn't do it." He said.
I really wished it was that easy. Kylie would have been probably plotting her revenge on me. I wasn't gonna like it, she would have made sure of that. "What about that message? Did you get any other messages?" He asked. "No, nothing." I shrugged. "I should tell her that someone is planning on hurting her." I continued. "Where do you think she is?" He asked.
"Maybe at Alexander's or Beatrice's, I don't know." I leaned my back against the wood. "Look, you should take care, okay? Make sure you're safe first." He held my hand. His hand was bigger than mine. They were warm despite the blowing wind. "I will." I nodded. He gave me a soft smile. "I got a class to go to." I took my hand away, getting up. "Are you sure you're up for that?" He asked. "Yeah, I am fine." I smiled.
"Alright. Give me your phone." He held his hand out. I looked at him, confused. "I will give you my number, in case you needed anything." He said. I handed him my phone. "Here, call me if you need anything." He typed in the number. I really hoped I wouldn't have to use it.

A week passed by since my fight with Kylie. I didn't see her at all. I got no more messages, I even decided that it could be a stupid joke like the officer said. I hanged out with Zack most of my free time. He turned out to be such a great guy. His parents got a divorce when he was seventeen. He has a brother. Mike. He stayed in Paris. Zack told me that his mother sent him there.
His father wasn't exactly a part of the picture anymore. Until then, we were just friends. "I am just gonna grab my charger and drop my books." I said as we stood in front of the door. "Just hurry up. If you want to watch that movie." He said. I rolled my eyes playfully as I got into the room. Kylie was standing in the middle of the room.
She looked thinner. Her cheeks were hallow. Her hair was cut short, horribly. Her eyes were puffy and red. "Kylie?" I walked slowly towards her. "Oh, Jane. I am so sorry." She cried, as she threw herself between my arms. I held her. Her cries were horrible. "Are you okay? What happened?" I asked, tapping her back. "Alex, we, we got into a fight. He was horrible!" She sobbed.
I felt so bad for not caring about her all this past week. "I am so sorry. You're okay now." I stoked her hair softly. She pulled back, wiping her cheeks. I noticed some kind of choking marks on her neck. "Kylie, did he hurt you?" I asked, my nerves burning. She covered her neck nervously. "It's nothing, J. I am okay." She nodded. "We have to go to the police." I demanded.
"No, it's alright. I will be okay. Please, Jane, just drop it." She begged. My chin wobbled as I looked at her. "Zack?" She tilted her head. I turned to look at Zack. My shock, seeing Kylie again, made me forget that I left the door open. I walked up to him. "I am sorry, but, I can't come. I gotta stay with her." I whispered. His gaze skipped between me and her.
"Are you going to be okay?" He asked. "I will be fine, Zack." I nodded. "Call me if anything happens, okay?" He said. I nodded with a smile. I shut the door behind him. I walked back to Kylie. She was sitting on her sheet less bed. "You can use my bed." I smiled. She gave me a weak smile. I knew we shouldn't have trusted this Alexander.
