Chapter 5
I reached the only place I could think of, my breath heavier than ever, my cheekbone killing me. I walk around the quite sorority house. Hoping to find a window or something. I heard a car pull up the place. I hid in a bush. I watched until he came into view. I sighted as I got up and walked up to him. I didn't really know anyone except him and Kylie. "Zack." I called, finding my voice. He looked at me, eyes wide. "Jane?" He walked up to me.
"Are you okay?" He asked. I guess it was too dark for him to see the bruise on my face. "Yeah, I just. Can I have a cup of water, first?" I said not being able to say anything without bursting into tears. "Yeah, sure. Come in." He walked me to the house. We went to the kitchen. The house was quite and empty, unlike two days ago. He got me a cup of water.
He watched me as I drank it all in one gulp. "Jane? What happened to your face?" He asked. I took a deep breath. "Kylie went all crazy on me. I don't understand what happened." I buried my face into my hands. "Hey, it's okay. We will figure it out." His hand squeezed my shoulder softly. I cried softly into my hands.
"Hey, come here." I felt his strong arms around me. "I am sorry I came here, I just don't know anyone else around the campus." I cried. "Listen, hey, you can come to me whenever you want." He held my chin between his fingers. I looked at his blurry picture. "Let's get you some ice for this bruise." He smiled. I wiped away my tears with my jacket sleeves. He came back with a pack of ice. He held it up to my face, I flinched as the ice touched my cheek.
"I have to go." I said after half an hour of silence. "But, what if she's still there?" He asked. "I will try to reason with her." I shrugged, my fingertips slightly touching the bruise. "I don't think you should go back now, Jane. It seems to me as if Kylie can't control herself." He said. "Don't say that! She's my friend." I came back at him. His face fell.
I have seen Kylie become this bad version of herself lots of times before. I never wanted to be on her bad side one day. She didn't care how bad she could hurt someone as long as she gotten her revenge. "I am just trying to protect you. You haven't seen your face." He came closer. "Thank you for everything, Zack." I said with fury and left.
The room was messy and Kylie's side of the room was empty. I opened my phone and watched the video. It was so bad, I could barely finish it. I don't understand why would anyone take a video of something like this. Why would Kylie sleep with someone other than her boyfriend? I sighted as I kicked off my sneakers and laid in bed.
The next morning, my bruise brought a lot of pain upon my face. I took a painkiller, sitting in bed. Her bed was empty. I couldn't believe what happened last night. I could have never imagined Kylie acting like this with me on day. I remembered one time when we were kids and Tilly, her half sister, was babysitting us one time, she told Kylie to stop watching our favorite show and go to bed already.
Kylie stubbornly said no. Tilly shut the tv off and hurled us to bed. Kylie was so furious that night. Next morning, I woke up on Tilly screaming. The neighbors came and Tilly had a cut across her forehead. She kept saying that Kylie did it, but no one believed her. I did, I heard Kylie get out of bed that night. I just stayed quite, because I was scared of Kylie.
Tilly went into therapy for a while, then she moved with her dad away from her mother and sister. Kylie was raised by her single mother. Her father was a man in a bar that met her drunk mother. I checked my phone. Another unknown message. I opened it to find a voicemail. I clicked it open. "Jane Iris Brown. I am watching you, everyday. Take care of your life, your friend and your stupid boyfriend. I will make you pay!" The voice was cold and raspy.
I was frozen in place with fear. I didn't understand what was going on. Just a day ago I had my best friend, I was alright. I needed to go to the police. I pulled on my sneakers and took my phone and keys. As I opened the door, Zack met my face. He was about to knock. I wasn't sure how bad I looked. My night wasn't so good. I pulled my hood over my messy hair.
"Jane, god, are you okay?" He asked. "What are you doing here?" I closed the door behind me. "Look, I know I was being mean last night. I am sorry." He said, trying to keep up with my fast walking. "It's okay." I said. "Where are you going?" He stopped. I sighted. "I need to get to the police station." I said. "Why? What happened?" His eyebrows furrowed.
"I just need to go." I crossed my arms. "Do you need a ride?" He gave me a soft smile. "That would be nice." I nodded. We got into his jeep. He drove, I kept my gaze fixed on road. "Wanna tell me what is going on?" He asked. "I don't really wanna talk about it?" I shrugged.
We got into the police station, Zack trying to keep up with me. "Hey, slow down your horses, kids." A dark skinned man with a black mustache said as we got to his desk. "I need your help." I demanded with heavy breathes. "Sit down, breath." He pointed to the two chairs in front of his desk. I sat down. "Now, what is going on?" He asked. "I got a message that has a threat this morning." I said.
"A threat?" He asked, staring at my face. I covered my bruise with my hand. "Did you do that, kid?" He turned to Zack, pointing at my face. "No, sir." Zack shook his head. "Who did then?" He crossed his arms. "I was fighting." I said. "You play boxing?" He raised an eyebrow. "Yes." I lied. Zack looked at me. "Alright, then. May I hear the message?" The officer asked. I nodded handing him my phone. He opened the message. I stared at the ground as it played again.
"This could be a joke. Some kind of game. We will look into it and get back to you, Jane." The officer said. "She's in danger." Zack blurted out. "I know, but, it also could be some kids playing some kind of a joke." The officer shrugged. "Leave your number and we will look into it. I promise you, Miss Brown." The officer said. "Alright." I nodded. I wrote down my name and number.
"Why did you lie?" Zack asked as we got into the car. "Look, she didn't mean it. I am sure of that." I said. "Jane, what if she sent you this message?" He asked, fury creeping into his voice. "Why would she threaten herself, Zack? The message said that my friend is in danger and you, too!" I said with fury. "Where did I come into the picture?" He crossed his arms. "Stupid boyfriend?" I raised an eyebrow.
"Oh, I am the stupid boyfriend?" He asked, angrily. "Look, can you just take me home and then you can just forget about me!" I yelled at him. "You think I don't care about you?!" He yelled back. "I don't want you to!" We were both yelling now. "Fuck this, Jane! I like you alright! I lied when I said my mother made me take the fucking class. I took it to talk to you!" He yelled at me.
I looked at him, surprised. He sighted. My life was changing in ways I never imagined. I just wanted my normal boring life back.
