Chapter 16
My days went on with nothing other than hanging out with Zack. It seemed as if the attacker wasn't there anymore. No more attacks happened. I didn't know if he was planning something huge or he just simple got scared. My relationship with Kylie didn't get any better. I think the longest conversation we had was that one, back at the police station.
Deep within me I missed her. Kylie was my only family. It was impossible for me to just wipe off all those memories we had together. She held a pretty big part of me. It pained me that we weren't hanging out anymore. She got back with Alex, despite him abusing her the last time they were together.
I loved Kylie and I knew that sometimes, she didn't see abuse as a reason to leave someone. Her mother wasn't exactly what you would call a nice parent. She had drinking problems like I said before, she would beat Kylie. Her drinking problem started when she got divorced. Tilly's father wasn't happy with her. Kylie didn't care about him, even thought, I thought he was a great man.
He tried his best to take care of Kylie. Kylie didn't notice any of that. I am not saying she was an ungrateful person. She was a kid who wanted her real father beside her. She even tried to look for her real father back at sophomore year. We reached a dead end and she wasn't happy.

"This is a disaster." Zack whined. "What is it?" I asked as I looked at him. "I can't do this. I am going to fail." He buried his face in his hand. "Hey, you will do good." I patted his shoulder softly. "Of course, you would say that. You're brilliant!" I chuckled. "Hey, it will be okay. Just focus on all the important points and you will be as brilliant." I smiled. He smiled back. "No one can become as brilliant as you, Jane." He said.
I shook my head back to my own notes, chest fluttering. I looked around the packed cafeteria. Everyone was getting breakfast and trying to revise anything before their exams. Kylie caught my eyes. She was laughing. Beside her was Alex at a side and Beatrice at the other. I wished for her to do well at her exams. After all she was still my only best friend. I gave her a soft smile when she kept on looking at Alex.
At least she was happy and that was what mattered. I didn't hate her. I couldn't. She meant more to me.

I walked out of the exam hall, proud of how I did, a grin explaining it all. "Hey, Jane." Miss Harries met me into the hallway. "Hey." I smiled nervously, as I remembered the assignment left unopened in my emails. "How did you do?" She asked. "Great." I huffed. "I hope I will be able to give you an A+ on your end of year assignment." She smiled. "Yeah." I tried my best to stop gulping. "Alright, then. Have a great winter break." She said and then left me there. I waved at her as I watched her walk away.
I need to get started on that assignment. I thought as I walked away as well. I went to my room to start packing. I had to go home on winter break, which I wasn't exactly looking forward to. And since I wasn't talking to Kylie, then I would have to spend Christmas alone. I pushed the sad thought away and placed my clothes neatly into a suitcase.
I sat beside my suitcase staring at Kylie's empty side of the room. I buried my face into my hands, sighting. My phone buzzed to snatch me away from my sad thoughts. "Hello." I answered. "Hey, Jane, dear." My mother's voice came through the phone. "Hey, mom." I huffed. "I am so sorry but your father and I are incredibly busy. We won't be able to get you home." She said. Busy. I should have excepted something like that. My parents were always busy. Busy was a word I had grown up hearing all the time.
"Jane, you still there?" She asked, chaos surrounding her voice. "It's fine, mom. I will figure it out." I huffed once again. "Alright, see you back at home." She said and hanged up. I laid back in bed, having another heavy thought running through my mind. How would I get home.
"One ticket to Queens, please." I said to the smiling lady at the ticket booth. "That will be 3 dollars and 30 cents, dear." She smiled at me, handing me the ticket. I gave her a smile as I gave her the money. I took my change, after she wished me a nice trip. I made my way to the bus stop, with the crowd that's waiting there for the bus.
My phone buzzed in my pocket. A text from Zack was asking if I got on the bus. I texted him that I was still waiting for the bus. The phone started to ring. "Hey." I smiled as I answered. "Hi." He said with his sweet voice. "Do you really have to stay home alone at Christmas?" He exclaimed. "My parents are working I guess, like every year. As for Kylie, we're not talking." I shrugged.
"It's just sad." He huffed. "It's okay. I will get through it." I said. "We will get through it." His voice seemed so close. I turned around and there he was standing there, smiling. "What are you doing here?" I asked, trying my best to hide my wide smile. "I can't let you spend Christmas alone, Jane." He shrugged. I ran up to him and hugged him tightly. I don't think I have ever hugged anyone this tightly before, specially not a boy.
"Thanks you." I whispered. He planted a kiss onto the side of my head. "There it is." He nodded at the bus, that was getting packed. "You know that I have never been to Queens before?" He said, as we walked holding hands to the bus.
