Chapter 11
Zack kept his gaze on the road as we drove to the hospital. I got the address from officer Alkaline after we left the police station. I gave him the number from which the attacker texted me from. It turned out that the last number he called me from, tracked down to an out of service phone. I was really disappointed that we didn't get anything from it. I hoped that this number would get us somewhere.
"Here." The car stopped moving. We both got out of the car. We got into the hospital, the clean air conditioner made my hair fly behind my neck. Last time, I had a conversation with Kylie, we ended up fighting and she said that she didn't need me. It all seemed to come back after we got her in time yesterday.
"You okay?" Zack asked. I seemed to have zoomed out a bit. "Yeah, yeah. I am fine." I nodded. "Let's go, then." He walked in front me. I followed him. I watched him as he knocked the door slowly a couple of times. He opened the door for me. I got in first. Kylie was laying in the hospital bed, wrapped in a hospital dress. Her pixie cut still the same.
"Hey." I said slowly. She looked at me. Her arm was heavily bandaged. "Hey." She said. "We're glad you're alright, Kylie." Zack came closer to her bed. I was glad he said something. I could feel the tension building up between us. I couldn't do anything about it. "I thought you hate me now?" She raised her eyebrow. Zack smiled. "It's water under the bridge." He looked at me and then back at her. I walked a bit closer to stand beside him.
"I appreciate it." Kylie nodded. "Don't mention it." He said. "How are you?" I asked, finding my voice. "I got shot but I am okay." She shrugged. "I knew you were a tough one. Wonder how he actually kidnapped you." Zack said. "Can't do anything when you're drugged, Zack." She said. "What happened?" I asked. "I am really too tired for an integration, Jane." She rolled her eyes.
"You're right, sorry." I apologized like an idiot. The door knocked breaking the silence surrounding us. The door opened revealing Alexander. My mind started to ask a lot of questions. What is he doing here? I didn't trust him, not for a minute. He looked at us in surprise. "Alex?" Kylie frowned. "What are you doing here?" I asked in defense.
"Hey." He cleared his throat. "Go out or I am calling the cops." I crossed my arms, standing in front of him. He looked at me with squinted pair of eyes. I raised an eyebrow. "Jane, let him be. Don't make a fuss." She said. I didn't understand why was she so scared. Kylie wasn't exactly the type who would be scared of a guy. He was holding a bouquet of tulips. Kylie didn't like flowers. She thought they were too soft.
"Kylie, you shouldn't be hanging out with him anymore." I demanded. I didn't care if I hurt his feelings. "Jane, I can take care of myself, thank you for your visit." She said. She was pushing me away. I didn't understand why. I wanted to know. I really did. "What? I don't understand, he hurt you before!" I asked, filled with fury. "Stop, alright! I said I don't need you to get into my business!" She yelled.
I was angry not hurt. My anger seemed to take over my hurting part. But, I wasn't capable of saying anything, either. I clenched my jaw and stormed out of the room. I wanted to scream. I wanted to curse myself for spending all these years, believing that a girl like Kylie ever wanted to be my friend. A part of me wanted to cry so hard. This part wasn't functioning at the moment.
I was never this angry before, not even when my parents didn't show up for my graduation. Like, I told Zack before she was all I had. She was the only person who stood up for me and treated me good. Who actually cared about me. That's why I never wanted to lose her. Ever. My legs stopped as I reached the highway. It wasn't so crowded. A couple of cars came and went by.
I breathed heavily as the cold wind rubbled through my clothes. "Jane!" Zack apparently caught up with me. I turned to him. "Hey, you alright?" He asked, once he caught his breath. I sighted. "Look, I don't know what the hell happened back there, but, you didn't do it alright? It's not your fault." He said. Something about Zack always seemed to calm me down. I think it was his blue eyes. They were so calming.
I could have drowned in them and it wouldn't matter. "I just can't believe she said that." I said, with my hands on my hips. "Screw her, alright?" He smiled. I smiled back. He was right. "Yeah, screw her!" I demanded. He chuckled. "Yeah, scream it out, baby! Screw her!" He laughed. "Screw her!" I yelled into the wind. My vocal cords vibrated as I yelled the same words over and over again.
It felt good. I didn't feel guilty at all. She deserved it for not caring about me anymore. I looked at Zack who was admiring me with a soft smile. "What?" I panted. "You just look beautiful." He shrugged. I smiled. "So, wanna grab something to eat or you got a class?" He asked. "I have a class in about an hour." I shrugged. "You not gonna study before it?" He dramatically asked. I rolled my eyes as I walked ahead of him. "Jane Brown, I definitely ruined you." He smirked as he walked beside me.
"Maybe I ruined you?" I asked. "Oh, I am still failing some of my classes, thank you." He said. I laughed. He laughed along. A tiny part of me liked Zack. I thought as we walked together. I liked the thought.
