Chapter 10

My head seemed to stop working. I was stunned. The words kept on repeating themselves in my head. Say goodbye to childhood bestie. The same cold hard voice said in my head again and again. "Jane? Hey!" Zack snapped me out of my own thoughts. "Kylie." I panted, having trouble breathing once again.

"We should call the police. She is going to be okay, aright?" He took his phone. "No! Wait!" I snatched the phone out of his hands. He looked at me, with visible confusion. I was the only who knew how dangerous this guy was. I knew that he wasn't going to hesitate in killing Kylie if I called the police.

He wouldn't care. "Jane, we have to call help." He said. "We will, just not now. I have to go." I stood up. "Are you out of your mind?" He held my arm. "Zack, Kylie needs me. He said I should go, alone." I freed myself from his grip. "What if he hurts you?" He followed me as I walked to the door.

I didn't care about anything except Kylie. She mattered to me. I couldn't just let her die, despite what she said last night. She was angry. I was sure she didn't mean any of it. "Hey, will you listen to me?" He stopped me. I sighted. A part of what he said was rational. But, all I could think about was Kylie. My head wasn't even thinking this whole thing through.

"I am sorry, Zack. I have to go." I said. "I can't, I won't let you." His jaw clenched. "Look! Kylie is in danger! I have to save her!" I yelled at him. "You can't! You're just putting yourself into danger along with her!" He yelled back. "Let me go, Zack, now!" I snarled at him. "No." He simply answered. "What? I said let me go!" I tried to free myself but his grip only got harder.

"Jane, please, stop this madness!" He watched me. "Don't you get it! She's all I got! She's my only friend!" I cried. She was all I got. I didn't have anyone else. My parents weren't exactly the type you call nice. It wasn't easy for me to make friends. She was there for me all my life. I wasn't just going to risk her life. He sighted. "Come on." He walked to the car. I watched him, confused.

He opened the door and looked back at me. "What? You think I am going to let you go alone?" He said.

The ride was silent. I was trembling. The building that was in the address was old. It was in a poor neighborhood. It seemed to be an old closed store. I gulped at we walked there. The back door was open. "Stay here and call the police." He said. "Wait a second, no!" I grabbed his arm. "Jane, you're not going in there." He said.

"If I am not going in there, then, neither are you." I demanded. He closed his eyes, as if thinking it through. Zack was really a good looking guy. I enjoyed looking at him. "Fine! But, we call help before we go in." He said. I nodded as I watched him dial 911. My heart seemed to be beating way faster than usual. I really hoped that Kylie wasn't harmed in anyway.

"Let's go." He held my hand in his and we went in. The place smelled horrible. It was mostly dark except for a single florescent lamp, that kept on cracking the light. I could feel the sweat in my palm as it mixed with Zack's. We reached the front of the store, that had a swinging yellow lamp, underneath it was Kylie, tied and gagged. I ran up to her. "I wouldn't do that." Someone came in my way, it was my attacker, with a gun pointed at me.

Zack took my hand and pulled me to the back slowly. "How lovely, you're little boyfriend refused to let you come alone." I could have guessed that he smiled under his mask. "Leave her alone!" I yelled at him, after finding my voice. "You're not in a place to demand orders, Jane. I am the one with the loaded gun." He showed us his gun. I gulped. "Why don't you lay that down and fight like a man?" Zack beside me said.

A cold laugh escaped out of him. "I am a man, Zack. I am just a smart one." He said. Kylie was trying to scream through her gagged mouth. "What do you want?!" I asked. "I am kinda of getting tired of this damn question." He said. "You guys are so stupid. Coming here all alone." He clapped in sarcasm. I was glad that he didn't realize that he was the stupid one.

"Do you know what I am planning to do, Jane?" He got behind Kylie. His free hand held her head up, while the other hand set the gun right into the crook of her neck. "Do you?" He snarled. I shook my head, in fear. One wrong move, could kill Kylie. "I am going to kill both of them, and you're just gonna watch." He said.

My first tear came after that. I couldn't help but cry. It was actually the only thing I could do. "You're a fucking coward!" Zack yelled at him. "Come on, Zack. Don't make me start with you!" He furiously said. I gulped, wondering what was taking the police so long to arrive already.

"I told you that you will pay. Some things are just very fucking expensive, Jane." He yelled, my shaking got worse. Sirens grabbed his attention and eased my anxiety as his hands let go off Kylie. "You bitch!" He shouted, looking back at us. "Get down!" My whole body collided with the ground as I felt Zack's arm push me down.

Bullets kept on flying above us. My ears were ringing. I was afraid that Kylie got hit somehow. My eyes were closed and I couldn't hear anything except the ringing. It was terrible.

                              ~~~~~~~~
"You shouldn't have came here all alone, Miss Brown." Officer Alkaline said as a nurse was checking up on me. "How is Kylie?" I asked. I didn't see her. "She got transferred to the hospital." He said. "Is she hurt?" I asked. "A bullet got caught up in her arm. She will be okay." He nodded. This was all my fault. She got hurt because I wasn't carful enough. It didn't matter at the end if I came alone or not. Kylie still got hurt.
"Hey." Zack stood beside the officer. "I will leave you two for now. I would also like to see your phone, tomorrow, Miss Brown." He said. I nodded as he left. The nurse left me alone with Zack who jumped into the ambulance car. "Okay?" He asked. "Was she badly hurt?" I asked. "I didn't see her. I am sure she's fine, Jane." He squeezed my hand softly. "I am sorry." I sighted.
"For what?" He asked. "Putting you through all this crap." I said. "You mean a crazy guy trying to kill me? Don't mind that, I get that all the time." He said. I chuckled. He smiled at me. I was glad that somehow I wasn't alone in this.
