chapter two | moving across the pond

I seriously hate my life right now.

Mary gripped her seat tightly as the plane was landing. She couldn't believe this was actually happening. Today was the day she left her old life behind and started a new one, which she was totally against. Mary only found out after she finished her fifth year at Ilvermorny that she was moving and that was two months ago. Not only that, but she also found out that her family were Death Eaters. They didn't give her enough time to take in the news. Instead, they wanted to get out of America as fast as they could. Now, they were in England, which was their new home.

It wasn't just because Mary was going to become a Death Eater that they left America. Mary and the rest of her family first heard of the rumors that Lord Voldemort returned when Mary finished her fourth year. Around that time, Cedric Diggory, a Hogwarts student, was killed during the Triwizard Tournament. Mary's parents were unsure if he was back or not, so they stayed in America. But a year later, once it was official that Lord Voldemort had returned, Mary's parents managed to find the Malfoy family after seeing their name in the papers. So now, they were meeting them face-to-face after writing back and forth for the last two months.

She looked out the window and groaned at the cloudy skies and the rain that was about to fall. The gloomy weather made Mary even more depressed. Once the plane was finally on the ground, Mary followed her parents and her brother off. They went to go get their trunks, then to Customs. Everything in their trunks were nothing but No-Maj things, so there was nothing to hide. All of their magical things were hidden in a special bag Mary's father had. Once they were done, the four finally headed out of the airport, where they got a rental car and gave the driver the address to go to.

"No-Maj transportation. How unpleasant," Suzanne, Mary's mother, muttered under her breath.

Mary rolled her eyes. Honestly, it's not that bad, she thought.

Once they arrived in town, the Fowler family got out of the car and grabbed their things. Her parents led Mary and Tobias, her older brother, into the town of London.

"Exciting, isn't it?" Tobias asked Mary.

"Oh, yeah, I'm bursting with joy," she retorted in a sarcastic tone.

"Don't have that attitude when we meet the Malfoy family," he warned her. "They're very loyal to the Dark Lord and we need to make a good impression. Besides, they have a son your age."

"And? Do you expect me to marry him or something? Don't tell me there's some kind of arranged marriage for us," she inquired.

"No, but you're going to need someone to show you around Hogwarts," he pointed out. "He's very popular in Slytherin House, you know, so you shouldn't have a hard time making any friends."

"What if I don't get Sorted into Slytherin?"

"You will. I know you will."

Mary shook her head. Tobias and Mary were nothing alike. They had different beliefs, which was why her parents favored him more. He was the trophy her parents liked to show off whenever they could.

Walter, Mary's father, led everyone to a dark alley, taking out a small bag and placing everyone's trunks inside of it. "Undetectable Extension Charm really comes in handy," he told the others.

"I'm sure every witch and wizard in the world knows that already," Mary responded.

Her father ignored her comment and had everyone place their hands in the middle. With no warning, the Fowler family Apparated with a crack!

Mary had never Apparated before, so she almost lost her footing when they arrived at Malfoy Manor. She looked at the gloomy estate, following the rest of her family to the gates. Everyone took turns getting their trunks out of the small bag Walter had in his pocket. Mary looked up at the manor with a bit of curiosity. A woman and a boy were walking towards them, opening the gates.

"You must be the Fowler family!" the woman called out. "It's so nice to finally meet you! I'm Narcissa Malfoy." She shook Walter's hand, then Tobias' hand, then Suzanne and finally Mary. "This is my son. Draco, come and say hello." Draco did as he was told and shook everyone's hand.

Mary eyed Draco as he went to stand with his mother. Does he always look like he's bored to death?

Narcissa and Draco led the others to the manor. Mary and her family were given a tour of the mansion, scanning all of the furniture and plain décor, which was in every room they walked through. Mary looked at the dark interior and the portraits of the family and other wizards and witches that she was not able to recognize. Her hand glided across the clean and wooden walls while looking up at the chandeliers in somewhat admiration. She raised her eyebrows at everything she was seeing, feeling weird about all of it. Overall, Mary was not sure how she would be able to stay in this depressed-looking home with a family she only just met.

"Draco, would you like to show Mary her room?" Narcissa asked her son.

Draco nodded his head and began to walk up the stairs, followed by Mary and her things. He led her to the first door on the left, opening it for her and letting her inside first. Mary walked inside the room and looked around, a bored expression crept upon her face.

"What? Does it not meet up to your expectations?" he inquired in a sneering tone.

Mary placed her stuff on the floor and turned around to face Draco. "It's fine," she replied. Draco let out a scoff. "What?" she asked.

"Are all Americans bad liars?" he asked.

"Are all Brits this rude to their guests?" she retorted.

He raised his eyebrows at her. "In case you haven't noticed, we hardly ever have guests stay over."

"Maybe it's because you're rude to everyone and they don't want to stay over here."

Draco rolled his eyes. "If there's something wrong with the room, then just tell me."

Mary sighed and took another look around. "It's just that...it's so...I don't know...gloomy. It seems like no light ever comes through the window, or through this house for that matter."

"Well, it's usually like that around here," he explained. "If I were you, then I would get used to it."

Mary groaned. "I can't believe this is happening," she mumbled.

"They want you to become one, don't they?" he asked.

"Become what?"

"You know...a Death Eater, like me."

"You're a Death Eater?"

"Well, I will be tomorrow."

Mary widened her eyes. "That soon?" Draco nodded his head. "Are you nervous?"

He shrugged his shoulders. "I'm not sure what to expect, really. Look, no more questions for today. I'll see you tomorrow." With that, Draco shut the door behind him, leaving Mary alone in her new room.

She went to the bed and sat down on the edge, falling on her back. Looking up at the ceiling, she tried to imagine her old ceiling in her home in Massachusetts. Mary wanted to remember everything about her old house. She liked how the warm and bright colors filled the rooms and how her bedroom was decorated with colorful lights that were on whenever it was nighttime outside.

Knock, knock.

"Come in!" Mary shouted, sitting up from her bed. The door opened and Mary's parents walked in. She rolled her eyes and folded her arms over her chest. "What do you two want?"

"We just came to see your new room," Suzanne stated.

"Well, it's boring and depressing to look at, just like the rest of this house," Mary retorted.

Walter sighed and gave Mary a disappointing look. "We would appreciate it if you didn't have that kind of attitude. This is all for the best, especially for you."

"Dad, I just found out that you, Mom, and Tobias are Death Eaters. Now, you're expecting me to become one as well."

Suzanne looked at Walter. "I got this." Walter nodded his head and gave Mary a weak smile, then left her bedroom. Suzanne sat down on the bed next to Mary. "I know this is hard to take in a once, but you have to understand that this is the side you will want to be on when the time comes."

Mary scoffed. "Yeah, like Harry Potter is going to declare war on the darkest wizard of all time."

"No, but the Dark Lord might," Suzanne said.

She rolled her eyes again. "I don't even care anymore. I just want to go back home."

"This is your home, Mary."

"No, back to Massachusetts," she snapped.

Her mother shook her head. "I know you don't see it now, but you'll thank me and your father later once the Dark Lord rises back to power. Maybe then, you'll see that we will always have the advantage." She gave Mary a kiss on her forehead. "Goodnight, Mary." She stood up and left her bedroom, shutting the door behind her.

Mary decided to get under the covers this time. She changed into her pajamas and crawled into bed. She rested her head on her pillow and pulled the comforter and sheets over her body. She was hoping that once she woke up the next morning, she would be back in her old bedroom in America.

But she knew that wasn't going to happen. And so Mary drifted off to sleep, hoping her new life would at least be a little bit interesting.

Maybe this time, I can make some friends.
