chapter six | potions class
Mary woke up the next morning, feeling a little bit anxious. She sat up from her bed and stretched her arms out. When Mary looked over at Pansy's bed, it was already made, signaling that Pansy was awake and getting ready for the first day of classes. While Pansy was ready to start the day, Mary was ready for the day to be over.
She got out of bed and made it nice and neat, as if she hadn't been sleeping in it at all. Next, she went to the bathroom, brushing her teeth and hair. Finally, she went back into the dorm and changed into her uniform and looked at herself in the mirror, shaking her head.
"Dreadful, aren't they?" Pansy said, making Mary jump.
She turned around and saw Pansy wearing the same uniform. "They could be worse," Mary replied.
Pansy scoffed. "They're already hideous. What were your uniforms like back at Ilvermorny?"
"Well, they were robes with the colors blue and cranberry," Mary explained, turning around to look at the mirror again. "They are fastened by a gold Gordian Knot. It's the brooch that Isolt Sayre, one of the founders of Ilvermorny, discovered in the ruins of the original Ilvermorny cottage. Her husband, James Steward, helped her design the uniforms."
"Why blue and cranberry?" Pansy questioned, sounding a little disgusted.
"Isolt wanted to be in Ravenclaw House if she had ever attended Hogwarts," Mary replied. "James picked the color cranberry because of his love for cranberry pie."
"They told you this stuff back at Ilvermorny?" Pansy retorted.
Mary, who was now getting annoyed, turned back around and nodded her head. "Yes, Pansy, they told us this stuff back at Ilvermorny."
Once the girls were ready, they gathered their school things and headed downstairs. Draco, Blaise, Theodore, and other boys were waiting for them in the Slytherin Common Room.
"About time you two showed up," Blaise said. "We're hungry."
"You could've gone down to the Great Hall without us," Pansy pointed out.
"Well, I was trying to be a gentleman," he replied. "I know the ladies like a gentleman."
Pansy let out a scoff, raising her eyebrows. "You're hardly a gentleman, Blaise."
Mary cleared her throat and looked at Draco. "So, Draco, do you want to introduce me to your other friends?"
"I was getting there, but Blaise and Pansy were having their own little conversation," Draco retorted, rolling his eyes at Blaise and Pansy. "These are my other friends, Vincent Crabbe and Gregory Goyle. Just call them Crabbe and Goyle. That's what they prefer." Draco looked at his two friends. "Guys, this is Mary Fowler."
Mary gave the two boys an awkward smile, not sure if she could rely on them for any help. Both boys were slightly chubby and stood beside each other as if they were the toughest wizards here.
Draco must've felt sorry for them when he met them for the first time, Mary thought.
Everyone walked down to the Great Hall together. Crabbe and Goyle dashed down the corridor while the others stayed behind and went at their own pace.
"Just so you know, Crabbe and Goyle aren't really..." Draco trailed off, trying to find the right words.
"The brightest wizards at Hogwarts?" Mary replied.
"Yeah, that," Draco said. "But they follow me all the time because they have no one else, really. It's kind of sad."
"It must be annoying as well, having them around you all the time," Mary said.
"It is," Theo stepped in. "They're not following Draco right now because food is calling their names."
Mary smiled and laughed a little at this. "By the way they were running, it looked like it."
Theo and Blaise laughed at her response. "That's the first time I've seen you smile since you've been here," Blaise said, grinning at her.
The Great Hall was packed and filled with food like it was last night. Everyone was talking and eating with their friends before they had to go to their classes.
"Mary, you should come sit with me and my other friends," Pansy suggested.
"I think she'll be fine with us, Pansy," Draco retorted, sitting down, motioning Mary to sit down beside him.
"Fine, then." Pansy shot a glare at Draco, then went to go sit with some other girls at the end of the Slytherin table.
"Who are they?" Mary asked.
"A bunch of girls that you don't want to hang out with," Theo answered, taking a seat across from her.
"Those girls have practically been best friends ever since we set foot into this school," Blaise added, plopping down beside Theo.
"So what's wrong with them?" Mary questioned, getting some food onto her plate.
"They're the most annoying group of girls in Slytherin House," Blaise said. "I mean, I know that we're kind of annoying at times, but those girls...we can't stand them."
"Then why do you guys hang out with Pansy?" Mary pointed out.
"Because of her family," Draco spoke up. "They're powerful people."
"And scary, too," Theo added.
"But Daphne Greengrass and Millicent Bulstrode are the worst. Mostly because they're Pansy's slaves," Blaise explained. "The three of them are not to be messed with. They will destroy you."
"So it's best if you steer clear from them," Draco warned.
"Duly noted," Mary said, nodding her head.
Professor Snape came around the Slytherin table to give everyone their schedules. Fortunately, Mary would be sticking with her new friends for all of her classes, so she wouldn't be alone. Once breakfast was over, Mary, Draco, and Blaise all got up, leaving Theo behind, and headed for their first class of the day: Potions.
"Seriously, why are we taking this class?" Blaise complained.
"Because we have to, that's why," Draco replied. "Let's go. We don't want to be late."
The three went to the dungeons, which was where the class was at. On the way there, Mary spotted the curly-haired boy from the train. He was walking down the corridor with the blonde girl that was with him yesterday. Both of them were wearing the same robes, except instead of sporting green, they had on blue. The two saw Mary and looked at her for a brief moment before they looked away and kept on walking.
"Oliver Campbell and Violet Hamilton," Blaise said in Mary's ear. "Ravenclaws. I noticed you staring at them. They have their own friends. You saw what they were really like on the train yesterday."
Only because everyone was harassing them, she thought.
When they got to the dungeons, Crabbe, Goyle, and Pansy were already there. A bunch of Gryffindors were standing around, avoiding the Slytherins. Mary followed the boys as they stood by the cabinets. Being the only Slytherins in the class, they were basically the outcasts.
Mary recognized two more people from the train. "Andrew Rowland and Eliza Pearce," Draco said. "They like to whisper and giggle amongst themselves."
"So who was the other guy with them?" Mary asked.
"William Scamander," Blaise answered. "He thinks he's cool just because his grandfather is--"
"Newt Scamander," Mary finished for him. "Everyone in America knows who his grandfather is."
"Of course," Blaise muttered.
Once everyone was settled in, Professor Slughorn entered the classroom with a big smile on his face. "Good morning, class! Welcome to Potions! I hope this year will be an exciting year for you all! Shall we get started?" He looked down at all of the potions in front of them and started off by asking questions about the first one.
"I can already tell that this class is going to be boring," Pansy whispered to the others.
While Slughorn was talking, two figures appeared at the door. He turned around and smiled a little. "Ah. Harry, I was beginning to worry. You've brought someone with us, I see."
"Ron Weasley, sir," the ginger introduced himself. "But I'm dead awful at Potions, a menace, actually. So I should just go..." He tried to leave, but Harry stopped him.
"Nonsense, we'll sort you out," Slughorn told him. "Any friends of Harry are friends of mine. Get your books out."
"Um, sorry, sir, I don't have my book yet and nor has Ron," Harry explained.
"No worries just get what you want from the cupboard," Slughorn said, pointing at the cupboard behind them. He turned back around and went back to the potions. "Now, this potion right here, can anyone tell me what it is?" A bushy-haired girl from Gryffindor put her hand up in the air. "Yes, Miss...?"
"Granger, sir," she said. "This potion is Amortentia. It's the most powerful love potion in the world. It's rumored to smell differently to each person according to what attracts them. For example, I smell freshly mown grass, new parchment...and...spearmint toothpaste." She went back to standing beside some other Gryffindor, a bit flustered.
"Now, Amortentia doesn't create actual love. That would be impossible. But it does cause powerful infatuation or obsession. For that reason, it's probably the most dangerous potion in this room." Slughorn placed a lid over the cauldron.
"Sir? You haven't told us what's in that one," some girl from Gryffindor piped up, pointing at the tiniest vial he had displayed.
Slughorn took the tiny vial and held it up for everyone to see. "Oh, yes. What you see before you, ladies and gentlemen, is a curious little potion known as Felix Felicis. But it is more commonly referred to as--"
"Liquid Luck," Mary stated.
"Yes, Miss Fowler. Liquid Luck." He shot a smile at her, then continued to speak. "It's very tricky to make, disastrous if you get it wrong. One sip and you'll find that all of your endeavors succeed. At least until the effects wear off.
"So this is what I offer each of you today. One tiny vial of Liquid Luck to the student who, in the hour that remains, manages to brew an acceptable Draught of Living Death. That's found on page ten of your books. I should tell you this, however, only once did a student manage to brew a potion of sufficient quality to claim this prize. Nevertheless, good luck to you all. Let the brewing commence!" With that, Mary, Draco, Blaise, and Pansy went to a table and got started.
"I think that Liquid Luck would be very useful to us, don't you think?" Mary asked Draco in a low voice.
Draco scoffed. "Well, let's hope one of us can get this stupid potion right, then."
While Mary was opening her book, she noticed Andrew and Eliza staring at her while whispering back and forth. Eventually, the whispering turned into giggles. She was beginning to get annoyed by it, even though she tried her best to ignore them. She scanned over the directions to the potion numerous times and realized that she had to go get some other ingredients from the cabinet. She began to walk towards the cabinet, going past Andrew and Eliza.
"I bet they've already corrupted her," Eliza whispered. "Probably told her how Gryffindors are nothing but worthless gits."
"She'll probably hex one of us sooner or later," Andrew added. "Then we'll see if Ilvermorny taught her anything useful."
The two snorted with laughter. Mary, finally fed up with their comments, slammed the cabinet door and walked up to the two. "For your information, no one has corrupted me or said anything about Gryffindors. I can already tell by what I just heard that you two really are gits. And Ilvermorny has taught me a lot, thank you very much. We can settle this in a duel, if you want to. Maybe then we'll see if Hogwarts has taught you a thing or two."
Andrew and Eliza stood there in shock and speechless. With that, Mary spun around with her head up high as she stormed back to her table.
"Nice one, Mary," Blaise whispered to her.
Mary smiled a bit. "Yeah, it felt good."
Draco smirked. "You really are a Slytherin."
