chapter forty-two | the betrayal
"Do you think she's okay?" Oliver was sitting with the girls when he asked the question, pacing back and forth due to his nervousness.
Violet looked up at him and shook her head. "It hasn't been that long since she left, Ollie."
"I know, but I'm still worried, given how intense things were," he admitted.
The more he thought about their argument, the more guilty he was beginning to feel. No, he didn't want her to leave, and he wished he had made more of an effort to show her, to convince her that it was best if she stayed with him, where she was as safe as she could be. The last thing he wanted was for her to get hurt. If that were to happen...
No. He didn't want to think about that. As he did his best to forget the horrible thought, he let his pacing slow down a bit.
"Is she really that important to you, mate?" Andrew asked, throwing some wood onto the ground next to the fire. "Especially after she abandoned us to go after her Death Eater friend?"
Oliver rolled his eyes as he stopped in place and turned towards his friend. "Don't you have some more wood to get?" he asked in annoyance.
Andrew looked down at the pile of wood, then back at Oliver. "I think we've got enough."
"Well, how about that research you started over a year ago?" Eliza spoke up. "You know, the one about the Half-Blood Prince that you were so keen on knowing more about?"
"I stopped that a while ago," he stated. "Didn't get anywhere with it."
"What a surprise," Elza muttered sarcastically under her breath.
"Besides, there were more important things to worry about back then, which just happens to be relevant now," Andrew commented.
Oliver clenched his fists in annoyance. "I know where this is going, and I think you should stop right now."
"You know I'm telling the truth, Oliver. Maybe you'll eventually realize how stupid you're being for taking her side once again."
Before he knew it, Oliver pulled out his wand from his Jean pocket and aimed it at Andrew. "Don't say another word about Mary."
"Ollie, put your wand down," Violet intervened, standing up.
"You don't have it in you to hex me, mate," Andrew retorted, taking a step forward. "I have to admit, your girlfriend seems to have more balls than you."
"Andrew, that's enough!" Eliza interjected, shooting him a warning look, then standing up and heading his way. "Come on. You need to cool down."
As the two strolled away, Violet grabbed Oliver by the arm, taking him in the opposite direction. "You need to cool down as well."
"I'm fine, Vi," he tried to assure her.
"Seeing the way you were reacting when Andrew made those comments about Mary tells me otherwise."
Through the bitter air, Oliver felt his face still hot from the anger burning inside of him. "Well, she's my girlfriend. Of course I would react that way. If he was talking about you like that, Jacob would be annoyed, too."
Violet let out a small chuckle. "That's true. Merlin knows he would be fuming." She paused, looking at her friend. "It's nice to see you with someone that makes you happy."
Oliver shot her a weak smile. "Yeah, she does make me happy. I don't think I've felt this way about anyone before."
The blonde raised her eyebrows, followed by a smirk going across her face. "Well, I'm certainly glad to hear that."
"Why'd you say it like that?" he asked, giving her a suspicious look.
"Like what?" she asked, her expression remaining unchanged.
"Like that, Vi, and what about the smirk on your face?"
"It's nothing, Ollie," she said. "You're happy, which makes me happy. Can't I be happy for one of my best friends?"
"Well, of course you can." He opened his mouth to say more, but the words couldn't come out, unsure of what he wanted to say next. Really, he wasn't entirely sure if Violet was implying anything at all. Instead of making an attempt to figure it out, he just kept walking beside her in the forest.
The two stayed quiet for a while, giving time for Oliver to let his anger subside after his altercation with Andrew. However, his mind wandered to the thought of Mary again, which caused his worries to resurface once more. This time, there was more anxiety than ever, with each terrible scenario as to what could've happened to her in such a short period of time since she left.
Then, all of a sudden, there was a sharp crack that echoed throughout the forest.
"You think that's her?" Violet questioned in a low voice.
"I don't know," he whispered, his heart rate increasing.
As more cracks were heard, the thought of their friends back at the campsite made them quickly turn around and head back. Luckily, they weren't too far, knowing they'd reach them in time to warn about more people being in the forest. Just as they spotted the tent, their hearts dropped when they realized who else was there.
"Well, well, it's nice of you to finally join us," the familiar brown-haired Snatcher from Hampstead. "Now we've got a party."
Oliver and Violet felt the grasp around their arms as Snatchers dragged them beside their other friends. With distressed expressions on their faces, Oliver was confused as to how the Snatchers found them, despite the protective enchantments being up.
Unless...
That was when she walked out of the tent, and he couldn't take his eyes off of her. He noticed her red eyes and wet cheeks as she lifted her head and stared at him. Her mouth dropped as she froze in place, looking as if she wanted to explain herself, but not words escaped her lips. It became clear to him as to how this happened.
Mary led them here.
It seemed as if fuel was being added to the fire when Draco Malfoy appeared behind her.
"Told you so, didn't I?" Andrew muttered beside him.
"Not now, Andrew," Eliza scolded.
Oliver felt his heart drop, a lump about to form in his throat. He didn't want to believe that Mary led them here. After going through the trouble, risking her life to leave those awful people, including her own family, the trust she had built was now dissolved. She betrayed Oliver and his best friends, just like everyone was concerned about. His friends were right about her, and he felt like an idiot for thinking otherwise.
"It's all clear, Scabior," Malfoy announced to the leader, swinging everyone's rucksacks towards the other Snatchers.
"Good," he replied, then strolled towards Oliver when he noticed his lingering stare towards Mary. "Lovely, isn't she? I must say, she definitely made our job a lot easier by giving away your little campsite."
Mary bit her lip, letting out a small gasp. "Oliver--"
"This was all your doing?" he intervened.
"There's more to it than you think," she tried to explain.
"What else is there? It's clear to me that you betrayed us," he retorted. "And to bring Malfoy back with you--"
"Keep my name out of your mouth," Malfoy stepped in. "She's right. There's more to it than you even realize."
"Why should we believe you?" Andrew spoke up. "You two have done unforgivable things."
"Yet here we all are, because you all decided to trust Mary."
Before anyone else could get another word out, the sound of the Snatchers laughing filled the air.
"Well, we sure love a good fight," one of them stated. "But we must get going."
"Where to? The Ministry?" Jacob asked in a snarky tone.
Scabior let out a scoff. "Oh, no. You see, that wouldn't be fun if we let the Ministry handle the rest once we turn you in with them." He paused, using his hands to signal the other Snatchers to grab everyone from the Fire Pack. "Where we're going makes the Ministry look like child's play."
Once the five were secured by the tight grasp of the Snatchers, Scabior used his wand to wrap up the entire campsite, sweeping everything until there was nothing left of it. With that, Scabior Disapparated first, followed by Mary and Malfoy, then the rest not too far behind.
Oliver almost lost his balance as he felt himself being chewed up and spat out from Apparating. He was met with dark skies and a gloomy mansion before him, with the iron gates that were about to open. With each step he was forced to take, a chill went down Oliver's spine, knowing he or his friends couldn't prepare for whatever was about to come next.
"Ladies and gentlemen..." Scabior started once they reached the gates. "Welcome to Malfoy Manor."
