chapter eighteen | a heated train ride

"Wait, you saw them doing what?"

The Ravenclaw boy turned back at Andrew as they headed for the Hogwarts Express. "Did you not hear me the first time, Andy?"

"Yes, I did, but I want you to say it again," Andrew replied.

Oliver sighed, tugging at the handle of the one trunk he brought with him tighter and pulling his rucksack farther up his shoulder. "I saw Jacob and Violet kissing."

Andrew shook his head. "I can't believe neither of them said anything to us."

Oliver felt the same wave of shock when he first caught the two snogging in the corridor. His conversation with Violet should've been a hint that there was already something going on between them. Maybe he wasn't as observant as he thought he was. He was still attempting to figure out how Andrew felt about it, which made him nervous for Jacob and Violet.

"So did you say anything to them?" Andrew asked.

Oliver shook his head. "No. They saw me and I saw them and it was just awkward, so I left before they could stop me."

The Gryffindor snorted. "I think 'awkward' sums up your entire night, from what you told me happened at the party."

Oliver scoffed in response. "That word is what should be used to describe this train ride, because we know that's how it's going to be the whole way back to King's Cross."

The two continued on as they talked back and forth about their Christmas plans. While they hated the fact that they wouldn't be with Violet's family, along with Jacob and Eliza, at least the two would have each other, so that was a plus for them.

When they arrived at the station, the other three friends were waiting for them, standing by the train. Oliver and Andrew approached them, to which they received smiles from all three.

"Thanks for waiting for us," Andrew said. "Ollie and I have always been slow at packing."

"Yes, you have," Eliza replied. "Shall we get an empty compartment while we still have the chance?"

"Great idea," Jacob said very quickly, being the first to get his trunk settled in and then hopped on the train.

The others got their trunks in and then followed Jacob. It didn't take long for them to find a compartment. Just as they were all piling in, Oliver stopped when he spotted Hermione out of the corner of his eye. Her eyes then locked with his, beginning a stare off that lasted for what felt like forever. They never spoke a word, their eyes really saying everything. Hermione was the one to break the stare as she turned her back and went back the other way.

"You okay, Ollie?" Eliza asked him, sounding a bit concerned.

He looked at his friend and nodded, getting inside, sliding the door shut, and taking a seat between her and Andrew. "Yeah, I'm fine."

"I'm sorry about last night with Hermione," she said with an apologetic look on her face. "I know you were hoping it'd turn out better." She paused, sighing. "We all were, actually."

"Yeah, but the night was still interesting," Andrew stated, staring at Jacob and Violet across from him. "Right, you two?"

The couple looked at each other, then back at the trio. "We were going to tell you," Violet said.

"We just needed some time," Jacob Interjected. "Like, a lot of it."

Violet rolled her eyes at him. "No, not a lot. Just enough to figure out a way to tell you guys."

"How long has it been going on?" Eliza questioned.

"Since October," Violet answered.

"You mean to tell us that you two have been sneaking behind our backs for two months?" Andrew spoke up, sounding a bit upset.

Jacob turned towards Violet. "I told you he'd react like this."

"Can you blame me? I mean, we're all best mates and you two decide to become a couple and not tell us about it?" Andrew fixed his eyes towards Oliver and Eliza. "I don't understand how you two can be so calm about all of this."

Oliver scratched his head and leaned back. "So when we were talking in the common room that night, you two were...you know...seeing each other, Vi?"

The Ravenclaw girl nodded. "Yes, we were."

Andrew scoffed. "Wait, you two have already talked about this?"

"Andy, I didn't know they were dating at the time of the conversation," Oliver protested. "But we also talked about you not liking it."

Andrew threw his arms in the air out of frustration. "Well, of course I don't like it." He eyed Jacob. "Mate, you do realize this changes everything, right?"

"What, our friendship?" Jacob asked. "Why should it? I mean, let's be honest, we all knew this was coming, didn't we?"

Apparently, not Andrew, Oliver thought.

"We're sorry that we didn't tell any of you and that you had to find out like this, but we wanted to wait when we were both ready and that it was the right time," Jacob told them, grabbing Violet's hand. "We really care for each other. We always have, I think."

Violet turned his way and gave him a small smile, for which he returned the favor. "Yeah, he's right." She looked back at her other friends. "And as our best friends, we hope you can accept our relationship."

Oliver sighed and nodded. "Well, I still stand by what I said that night. I'm okay with it."

Eliza tucked some strands of hair behind her ear, nodding as well. "Yes, I'm okay with it, too."

The couple grinned at them, then faced Andrew. "What about you, Andy?" Violet inquired.

The boy exhaled loudly and stood up. "I need some space." He headed out of the compartment, slamming the door just hard enough to make the others wince.

"Like I said before, he'll come around," Oliver assured her. "Just give it some time."

"But how much time do you think he'll need?" Violet asked.

"No idea," Jacob stated. "But I'm thinking he'll need a lot of it."

For the rest of the ride, the four remained silent, occupying themselves with books and newspapers to keep busy. When Oliver got bored of that, he began to look out the window at the snow covering the land. He tried to feel more at ease and find a distraction with his mind still wanting to repeat the events of last night up to now. Then, he remembered that he and Mary were on good terms again. To Oliver, it was the one decent thing that came out of last night. It made him feel a bit better for some reason.

The train came to a halt, implying that they arrived at King's Cross. Andrew never came back to the compartment, so the others went on and got off the train. Everyone was grabbing their things when they eventually spotted Andrew leaning against the wall with his things, his expression still bothered.

"I better get going," Oliver said. "He's probably ready to go as well, given what just happened."

"Yeah," Jacob responded. "Sucks that you two couldn't stay with Vi's family."

"Well, it is what it is." Oliver shrugged. "We'll see you two soon." He looked over at Eliza. "Make sure they behave, okay?"

Eliza grinned. "Don't worry. I'll keep them in line."

He grinned, nodding and waving at the trio before heading off with Andrew. In a way, he was dreading the thought of being stuck with him in the mood he was in, but maybe he was able to talk some sense into him. At least, he hoped he could do just that.

"About time," Andrew snapped, folding his arms over his chest.

"Are you going to be in a pissy mood on the way home?" Oliver retorted.

The Gryffindor sighed, pushing himself off the wall. "I'll try not to be for your sake."

"Thank you." Oliver nodded and then grinned. "Who knows? Maybe I'll catch you and Eliza snogging in the corridor next."

A small grin and an eye roll came upon Andrew as he playfully shoved Oliver. "Shut up, you git."

So the two began to walk down the station, heading into the Muggle world, waiting to see what was to come for them during these festive times.

A/N: Wow, I actually wrote this in a day?

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this chapter. The next one will be...er...I'll just let you wait and find out.

Song above is Little Secrets by Passion Pit. I think this song fits the situation going on in this chapter (sort of? Lol, I'm terrible at picking songs for chapters).

Comment, vote, more angst to come!
