"Right, Jace?" I questioned, feeling uneasy with the way the both of them were acting.
I'm not quite sure why this bothered me as much as it was. Maybe it was because I knew he was keeping stuff from his past from me and being engaged with someone is something you don't forget about.
Jace ran his hand through his hair and over his face. He opened his mouth to say something when a middle aged, blonde, woman walked through the back door. She was in a sleek black suit that fitted her perfectly. The way her wavy hair was scraped back into a tight ponytail automatically gave you the impression that she meant business. She was intimidating, to say the least.
"Mommy!" Sky ran over and jumped into her Mum's arms. Skylar enclosed her Mum tightly in a hug, which she warmly returned.
Jace shifted so he was stood to my left. He slid his hand into mine, lacing our fingers together and rubbing the back of my hand with his thumb in gentle way. The coolness of the rings on his fingers shocked me at first, making me go to pull my hand away, but the warmness of his large hand easily overthrew that within me.
"Hey Mom," Jace said. I looked at his face and a smile was printed on his lips. He looked at his Mum with complete admiration and respect. I liked that about him. Men who respect their Mother's usually know how to treat women with respect.
Even though for a wide variety of people, meeting their boyfriends or girlfriends parents is a scary, nerve-racking thing but right now, I couldn't feel calmer. It was strange, the way I was feeling. I thought I would have started over thinking my every word and every move I made, but I didn't. It strangely felt like it was right. And with Jace stood next to me, I felt as if nothing could go wrong.
Their Mum glanced briefly at me and smiled, making me feel like I shouldn't have worried about anything yesterday. She looked at Jace and nodded while grinning. You could tell that with the way she nodded, some unspoken words had been said and they had that unbreakable mother-and-son bond.
Their Mum looked back at her daughter in her arms, "How is your arm today?" Her voice was coated in a motherly worry.
"It's okay, Mom. I had to remind Jace not to throw me in the pool though." Sky stared at Jace with a sly, cheeky look on her face. She knew that he was going to get told off about it and by the look on her face, she wanted him to.
The sophisticated woman glared at Jace momentarily. I winced at the sternness of her look; she had a look about her that meant no one, if they were smart, would mess with her. This was proven by the way Jace literally took a step back. He lightly squeezed my hand as he gave his Mum an apologetic smile.
I squeezed his hand back, making him look at me. I smiled at him, shaking my head in a humorous way. He grinned back and pretended to be clueless, shrugging his shoulders. We both stood there, smiling and looking at each other till the sound of Sky pretending to cough broke it up.
Moments before Sky interrupted us, I couldn't help but think about how much has changed over these last few months.
When I first met Jace I would have totally categorised him as your typical know-it-all, everybody loves me, type of guy. But the more time I have spent with him and got to know who he is as a person, the more I realised how far from the truth that really was.
I was intrigued by him, almost pulled towards him. We met unintentionally multiple different times and I couldn't be more grateful that we did.
I broke out of my daydream and focused on what Skylar was enthusiastically telling her Mum. As I watched, I noticed how much Jace and Skylar are actually alike. Not just their look, but the way they both use their hands to express how they're feeling when they talk about something they love or are excited about.
"Mom, this is Ivy. She is Jace's friend and they are going to get married and have kids and live together till they die!" Sky ran to my side, pushing Jace out of the way and replacing his hand in mine with her own. I noticed how Sky left out a part that she had said last time and I could not help but wonder why.
My vision turned to Jace. I raised my eyebrows at him and laughed when he began blushing for the second time today.
"Yes, Skylar, I am aware of Ivy's name. Especially with the amount that Jace goes on and on about how amazing she is constantly. He can talk too much about you way to easily." My heart did a little jump as I was immediately taken back to what he told me about being a private person in the car.
"I don't talk about stuff easily unless it's important to me."
I smiled to myself as those words echoed through my head. Maybe I am an important person in his life. That thought and that though alone made butterflies erupt in my stomach and my hands get clammy.
"Mom! What the hell!" Jace groaned but his Mum just rolled her eyes at him.
"What? I'm only telling the truth," she replied and winked at me.
"I'm going to go and get ready," Jace sulked, making both me and his Mum laugh. Ready for what?
"It is nice to finally meet you, Ivy."
"It's nice to meet you too, Miss."
"Ugh, that's way too formal. Please, call me Kate," she stated to me, finishing with a sweet smile. She had this Motherly feel about her, making me feel like I could go to her with my problems and she would magically sort them out. Of course, I wasn't not going to, but it's nice to feel that way with his Mum.
"Mom," Sky shouted, dragging out the end of the word.
Kate turned around and peeked at Sky. She turned back around to face me and sighed, "Hold on one second."
"Yes, Skylar."
"Guess what happened earlier," she didn't even give anyone time to reply before she carried on, "Jace was going to throw Ivy into the pool earlier and I was like, that's not fair. She doesn't want to be. So, I ran up to Jace and started fighting him. He wasn't letting her go so I said, 'Let Ivy go you asshole' and he did so I won," she said proudly of herself. The way she was waving her arms around whilst telling her Mum in a very expressive way and finished by dancing was the funniest thing I had seen all day. She would definitely know how to cheer someone up.
"Skylar, go and get Jace." Kate sounded extremely unimpressed.
Jace cautiously walked into the back yard. He knew what was going to happen, you could tell it by the look on his face. He quickly glanced over at me and winked.
"Hello, Mother." Jace stood with his hands behind his back and the smile that makes my heart melt on his face.
"You know what? Just go and get ready. We're leaving soon," Kate defeatedly said. Where are we going?
Jace walked over to me, grabbing me by my wrist and dragged me inside the house.
