The Deadly Allegory
Michaela looked up at the sky with a pained groan. She looks above the memories of what happened flashing through her mind, and she calls out for help."Zeke! Drea!" She calls out, grasping her shoulder which was most definitely dislocated.
"Kinda occupied!" Drea calls out and Michaela could hear a commotion "Stop wriggling! " Drea exclaimed and Michaela heard the tell tale jingle of handcuffs before her partner ran over.
Zeke by her side, "You okay Mick!" Zeke calls out, and Mick winces and shakes her head. The two figures above her look at one another before nodding. Zeke carefully climbs down the ledge of the cliff as Drea rummages through her go bag.
Zeke manages to make it down with little trouble and hugs Michaela gently. "Alright now it's time to get you back onto higher ground." Zeke murmured and Michaela looks at him in confusion.
"How Zeke I have a dislocated shoulder I highly doubt if I'd be able climb up." Michaela says and Zeke nods. This was going to be hard, that is until he hears Drea shout.
"Heads up!" She calls out as a bulky rope tumble down the cliff edge Drea holding onto the other end tightly. "Zeke get Michaela situated then climbed back up and help me pull. Drea called out and Zeke nodded.
"Do you have everything in that go bag of yours?" Michaela asks playfully and Drea rolls her eyes slightly. She had always been one to prepare even more so once she met Georgie who was the queen of preparedness and also stuffing things into one bag.
"What can I say, Georgie's rubbing off on me." Drea says causing Michaela to giggleas Zeke tied the rope around Michaela's waist securely. "Okay M, if it's start to hurt tell us." Drea says as Zeke scales back up the cliff
They make quick yet gentle work on pulling Michaela backup to solid ground. Drea looking absolutely exhausted by all the strain she had put on herself.
………..
Pumpkin whimpers as Grace leads them to the old hideout that Grace and Tarik use ro hide in. Pumpkin had been picked up the night before by Tarik at the request of Grace and Cal.
This fact made Pumpkin nervous. Yes she was an amazing guard dog. She knew when to attack and when not to. She was great at search and rescue, but the truth is she is still a maltipoo. She wasn't big in fact she was pretty small. When it came to three guys who had already successfully killed Zeke if it wasn't for the calling he wouldn't be alive right now.
Pumpkin wasn't cut out for this she was a therapy dog not some police dog. Georgie was having doubts and Pumpkin was too. They came here to do their job. Now they were put into situations that Pumpkin hadn't imagined. She loved Cal, the small boy was her best friend. What if she couldn't save him this time.
Okay guys stay in here do not let anything in. Pumpkin keep them safe girl. I'm trusting you to protect them." Grace says and Pumpkin nods solemnly. She was sure going to do her best. As the two adults leaves the tween and baby in the care of a teenage dog.
………
"Alright Michaela," Drea starts as they continue walking the path quickly after they caught their breath. Drea knew they had to fix Michaela's arm. She would ask Zeke to do it but since he could feel exactly what Michaela was feeling when they touched and Drea had more medical experience due to her pesky sister. She knew exactly how to place a shoulder back in the socket.
"This is gonna hurt." Michaela says and Drea nod sympathetically. She knew how much getting a shoulder popped into a socket could hurt. She had it happen once as a teen and when her sister popped it back in… it wasn't pretty.
"Yeah I know, I'm doing it in three… two…" Drea says pushing the shoulder back into socket and hears the pop loudly. Anf Michaela let out a pained scream making Drea wince
That when shots were heard causing them all tk speed up their family was in trouble and they needed to be there for them.
………..
They all ran into Grace pointing a gun at Jace's head causing the woman to put her hands up. They had a girl's day a few weeks ago and learned just how good a shot Grace was. Drea looks at her fancy watch checking the time and showing ut to Michaela. It was a few minutes before the time on the surveillance they watched months ago now.
"Grace, don't shoot him, he's going to die in a few seconds anyways. It is not worth it." Ben tries to reason with his wife there was blood on her face and her eyes were pained.
"He killed my younger brother. He is not getting to our kids." Grace grits out and Drea suddenly had a flashback to a day just like this eight years ago.
"Grace don't do it, I know how you feel and not saying that to sympathize with you. My younger sister was killed almost eight years ago. I was just training to be a cop back then and when it happened I shot the guy in self defense and out of my own hatred. It tore my family in half. I haven't seen any of them since.
"Don't ruin your life like I ruined mine." Drea says quietly maintaining eye contact with Grace she never lets herself be this vulnerable not in front of her friends, but she didn't want her friend to ruin her life like she did.
……….
"I made some of my mom's world famous pasta." Olive says shoving Georgie a little trying to get her head out of the book she was reading through as Georgie drank her fourth cup of coffee.they have been working since three in the morning and it was now getting close to six in the evening.
"Thanks Ol," she mutters, glancing away from the book, grabbing the bowl from Olive carefully as she continues reading through the old book. A lot of it was actually not The Last Trial. When she finally found it she mentally cheered. "I finally found it Ol call your Aunt!" Georgie says reading through the first few pages of it.
………..
"What am I looking at here? Are those the same shadows as Cal's calling?" Mick asks a few minutes after Olive called Georgie just shrugs.
"Yeah, I think so, but... There's more than that. You know, I'm... I'm pretty sure this is a version of the famous etching called "The Last Trial" . Olive told Michaela who looked at her in confusion, "Okay..."
Georgie quickly steps in telling the story. "'The Last Trial' depicts the story of three prisoners who were given a second chance to correct the mistakes they made in life. The first prisoner used his chance to find love and was rewarded with a companion".
"Pete." Michaela says as Georgie and Olive nod before continuing.
"The second prisoner put past grievances to rest and was rewarded with peace....But the third prisoner chose vengeance, and a river of blood was shed". Georgie says as Olive looks at it
"Kind of gruesome for a teenager don't you think?" Olive asks as Georgie just chuckled. I know I never read this one before I just saw the illustrations and recognized them." Georgie says
How does this end? How do you stop it?" Michaela asks as Georgie just looks at Olive,
"Stop it? I don't think you can, it's an allegory. It's a lesson about redemption." Georgie says as both Olive and Michaela look at her. "Come again,"
"Miss Georgie, how is a river of blood a story of redemption?" Olive asks in confusion. "Because it was called "The Last Trial" for a reason. It was a test. If the last man had chosen to forgive his enemies instead of taking revenge, then he would have been rewarded, but... he didn't, so..." Georgie says before turning the page to the last page of the story.
"So what Georgie? What happened to the last man?" Michaela asks as they were basically living this allegory myth thing Georgie was talking about. Georgie then looked at the story and closed it, looking at Olive with dead seriousness on her face
"If one does wrong they all die." Georgie says, her voice shaking slightly as she reread the last paragraph again. This was going to turn out horribly.
"G what do you mean? The other two chose to do good. They're fine while Jace is drowning from the inside out. Mick says as both Olive and Georgie grimace.
"Too much information Mick.! They both say at the same time before Georgie continued
"The last trial isn't about each person being judged individually. They all came back together, and now they're all being judged together." Georgie says
"That doesn't make any sense. Jace died, but Pete and Kory lived." Mick says turning the camera around to show Pete and Cory alive, not even noticing a black mist. "Um Olive, are you seeing this?" Georgie whispers as Olive nods, "Yeah we were too late." Olive admitted as Georgie nodded. They were definitely too late.
With that they heard a scream and the line. Was disconnected. "Dad? Mick? Great, they lost service. I feel so bad we didn't talk fast enough." Olive says quietly as Georgie nods,
"I know, but Olive things happen, it's not our fault. Now come on I know you're tired. Why don't you sleep in my room for awhile. It doesn't sound like you're mom and dad won't be home soon." Georgie says as Olive nods.
"Alright. I highly doubt I'll get any sleep though." Olive says as Georgie nods. She knows the feeling now that she was up she wouldn't be able to go back asleep.
"Even if you don't we can just talk. Remember Olive this is just as much part of my job as it is my dogs. " Georgie tells Olive who nods, "Thanks Miss Georgie it means a lot. We're lucky to have you on our side." Olive says. As both just hung around for the next few hours enjoying each other's company.
