Eighteen year old Georgie McCall, sighs and smiles as she finished unpacking the last of her things. Pumpkin and Mira, her two dogs, were waiting patiently in their new home for her to finish unpacking so they can go for a walk. Georgie was a makeup artist and a therapy dog handler; even though she had just finished high school, she was good at her jobs so she decided to head to New York because they needed her the most.
Three years ago, Georgie had read about a plane going missing. Now, just a few days prior, the people on said flight were proclaimed dead. She had come because of that, even though she wasn't quite sure how much they would open up to a person who wasn't a native to New York.
There is a knock on the door, and Georgie's two dogs start barking, "Hmm, I wonder who that could be," Georgie says as she stands up and walks to the front door With her dogs following behind her she then answers the door her dogs growling just a bit at the two women they did not know making Georgie shush them. "Uh- hi, how may I help you." Georgie asks hesitantly.
"Oh, I'm Grace and this," the woman says motion ing to the curly brunette behind her, "Is my daughter Olive. We noticed you just moved in. So we came over to welcome you, oh and with some cake." Grace says as Georgie nods,
"Oh um... well- thank you so much. I just moved a few days ago. I'm Georgie, those are my pups, Pumpkin and Mira." Georgie says motioning to the dogs who were now lying comfortably on the couch. "Why don't you come in?" She asked politely opening up the door a bit wider.
The older woman looks at Georgie, "I would hate to intrude." The mother says, but her child glances inside the home at the dogs. and her dogs in return wags their tail with curiosity. Georgie smiles. Her pups loved meeting new people.
"Mom, I want to meet Pumpkin and Mira." Olive murmurs eyes pleading, causing Georgie to chuckle. She already liked this girl and judging by her dogs tails so did they.
"You wouldn't intrude at all, in fact I would love the company." Georgie admits quietly as if admitting that would get her in trouble. Grace pauses, then smiles, then nods.
"Alright, as long as you don't mind." Grace relents walking into the cluttered home, setting the plastic container down on one of the many boxes Georgie had.
"Sorry for the clutteredness I'm usually much more organized," the young woman murmurs, before gesturing for them to take a seat. "Pumpkin, Mira meet Grace and Olive, they are our neighbors." Georgie turns her attention to her pups as she says this.
Pumpkin wags her tail excitedly, "Nice to meet you– I'm Pumpkin the top dog of this family, that's my sister Mira," the white dog barks directing her greeting to Olive. The smaller one just rolls her eyes with a huff. Pumpkin may be older, but she was wiser.
"They talk?" The twelve year old exclaimed, glancing at Georgie. The young woman gives a quick nod, going along with it. She knew kids always claimed that her dogs could speak. "That's so cool," Olive exclaimed earning a small smile from Georgie. She didn't like kids all that much, but for some reason, she felt this teenager was different.
"Where did you move from?" Grace finally asks and Georgie diverts her gaze to the mother, looking at her timidly. She did not want to think about home there was a reason she moved away.
"Oh- well, I'm from Arizona." Georgie murmurs her eyes looking at her dogs The two dogs just gave a nudge of reassurance to their owner. Georgie wasn't used to older adults being kind to her at home; they all thought she was crazy for chasing her dreams.
"Oh, cool, I've always been a New York girl, same with Olive." Grace tells Georgie who nods. New York was beautiful and much cooler both literally and figuratively and you could blend in way better.
"Where do you work ?" Georgie asks quietly, quickly deciding to change the subject from the current one which was making her comfortable. Grace just gives the girl a small smile. She could tell the girl was nervous and was apparently a little uncomfortable so she didn't mind the change in topic.
"Oh, I don't have a job… yet, my boyfriend helps pay for the food, and I make money by selling some of the food I make. My dream is to start a restaurant, but I haven't gotten the plans finished. What about you." Grace asks kindly and Georgie smiles; this is something she enjoyed talking about.
"I'm a makeup artist and a therapy dog handler. I actually start my job at Broadway tomorrow. Thanks to some connections from my first theater job, both me and my childhood friend have the job we dreamed of as kids." Georgie says, she then looks to the teen sitting on the floor with her puppies.
"And what about you Olive what grade are you in?" Georgie asked as Olive looked at Georgie.
"I'm in eighth grade." Olive says with a smile, as Georgie nods. Olive seemed so happy, much happier than she was at that age.
"Wow, that's amazing. I remember the eighth grade I really enjoyed it." Georgie says as Olive looks to her in confusion.
"You did, I hate it! Especially history. History is so boring, and it's the only class I'm failing in." Olive says as Georgie looks at the young girl.
"I used to love history. It was my third best subject after theater, and math, and theater really doesn't count." Georgie says as Grace just smiled as the two continued talking. Olive hasn't connected that easily to anyone before, not even Danny, her new boyfriend.
"Well we have to get going. Olive has soccer practice. Thanks for inviting us in, and hey I know you're going to be busy, but if you could I'm sure both Olive and I would appreciate some history help. Again that is if you don't mind." Grace says she didn't like doing this to someone so new in the area, but this young woman seemed to take everything in stride.
"I don't mind at all!" Georgie said with a very small smile, "Bring her on by, anytime my car is there, and I'll help to the best of my abilities. Also you can come by anytime I don't mind, and I'm honestly so used to random people walking in by now." Georgie says as the two dogs nod as people walk up and randomly talk to them that they were mostly used to it.
This makes Grace smile. "Great, thank you so much. Now come on Olive lets go." Grace says as Olive got up and followed her mother.
"It was nice to meet you Miss Georgie." Olive says before running to her mother Georgie just grinned. "Well, I think that went well. What do you think pups?" Georgie asks Pumpkin and Mira.
"It went very well, Olive is so nice I can't wait to see her again!" Pumpkin barks out excitedly making Georgie giggle. The white pup cocks her head in confusion. "What's so funny?
"What about you Mira? What did you think of them?" Georgie asked the smaller pup. The smaller pup just looked at her and wags her tail slowly
"They were nice, and actually weren't loud, weird, or creepy." Mira barks out as even though she hadn't been with Georgie long the Cinderella play she and Lily played in gave her enough experience with crazy people namingly Her owner's mother and father.
Georgie just grinned, "Good I'm glad you enjoyed it, because we'll be starting our new job tomorrow and visiting the nursing homes." Georgie says making both dogs wag their tails. Georgie was so ready to work again, and couldn't wait to help people in need.
……….
A week had passed since Georgie had last seen the two nice neighbors from across the street. It was her first day off since getting the makeup job and was just going to hang out with the pups for the rest of the day.
That is when she noticed the dish on her counter and groaned she hadn't brought Grace's container back yet! Georgie goes to grab it so she can take it back before hesitating. Was she going to intrude? She didn't have Grace's phone number so she couldn't call and check…
Georgie takes a deep breath to ground herself before heading over to where the Stone's house stood. When she knocks the older woman immediately answers and a smile illuminates her face. "Good afternoon Georgie, it's so great to see you again." Grace says cheerily and the teenage Olive runs up and hugs Georgie. This causes the eighteen old to freeze for just a moment before hesitantly hugging Olive.
"It's good to see you too and hi Ol!" Georgie says with a smile and Grace looks between her daughter and her neighbor. They were going on a girls trip. Maybe Georgie would like to come.
"Hey are you busy?" Grace asks Georgie who shook her head no slowly and timidly. She didn't know where this was going and was kind of worried.
"No, today's my day off, why?" Georgie asks in quiet confusion and Grace once again brings a kind smile on her face. This poor child always seemed so nervous around her, and it made Grace's heart hurt. She wasn't dumb and knew there must be a reason why Georgie acted like that and Grace didn't want to imagine it. She wanted to show this girl what it was like to have some real fun.
"We were just getting ready to head to the zoo. Would you like to join us?" Grace asks and she could see the girl contemplating what to say. "You don't have to go if you don't want to." Grace added gently and Georgie finally gave a smile.
"I would love to go, plus I'm sure this little seagull wouldn't leave me alone till I would anyway." Georgie says looking at Olive with a glint of playfulness while ruffling her hair.
"Why do you call me a seagull?!" The young teen asks in exasperation and Georgie chuckles at the young teen holding her hand. As Grace takes the bowl in to put it away before leaving.
"Wouldn't you like to know." Georgie tells the girl cheekily and Olive huffs Grace smiles from afar. That's when she knew that this young neighbor standing in front of her with her teen daughter was going to be part of their small broken family, and she was.
………
A year passed before Grace finally got the nerve up to tell Georgie about what happened to her wonderful husband, child, and sister in law… without crying. It took a lot for Grace to talk to someone about this. She tried therapy, but the counselor didn't help her or Olive at all, and she lost all connections to Jared after Michaela was assumed dead. Georgie was barely an adult, yet Grace felt comfortable telling her about it. Plus Georgie who was now like one of the family deserved to know.
Georgie had gotten a lot closer with the small family and was helping Olive with a history report for her ninth grade class in a few days, and when it was nearing bedtime Grace stopped Georgie and her pups before she could walk out the door. "Stay… please, I want to talk to you." Grace says and she immediately notes the uneasy look in Georgie's eyes. "It's nothing bad. I promise it's just something I want you to know." Grace says with quiet reassurance.
Georgie just lets out a breath of relief, "Okay we'll stay." Georgie confirms going to sit on the couch carefully. Grace just smiles as she makes sure her teenager made it to bed.
When she made it back down the stairs Georgie was still sitting right where Grace had left her reading a book about Greek mythology. Grace just slowly sat down beside her with a quiet sigh. "Georgie, I wanted to tell you something. " Grace says and Georgie nods slowly, easily picking up on the seriousness of this chat.
"Do you know about Montego Bay's Flight 828?" Grace asks slowly and when Georgie nods without saying a single word allowing Grace to continue without interruption. "Half of my family went on that plane and died, including my husband and my son." Grace says looking to Georgie who had a look of realization and sympathy in her eyes, and ever so slowly the younger girl inched towards her and hugs her gently.
"Grace…" Georgie started, but words failed the quiet girl; this was part of her job. One of the reasons she was here. She had talked to so many people affected by the flight, but she didn't know her best friends had been affected although it did make so much more sense. "I'm so sorry… I can't imagine what you've been going through… why didn't you tell me before?" Georgie asks and Grace sighs.
"I couldn't get up the nerve to. It's been four years now. I've given up hope, and I tend not to think about it unless I have too. You're the first person we really let in since the incident. You make Olive happy, you make me happy, and I truly appreciate you." Grace says and Georgie nods, taking a breath.
"I appreciate you guys too. Way more than you'll ever know." Georgie says and Grace nods in understanding, slightly surprised at the teen's admittance.
"You know Christmas is coming up, you should join us." Grace says and Georgie looks kind of worried but nods slowly when her dogs whimper.
"Of course, I would love to." Georgie agreed, and she did. For once since her husband died she felt happy as Olive opened her present and Georgie eyed everything in wonder.
Little did they know that their life would change forever the next year.
……….
Georgie was watching Olive practicing soccer with her team a year later. Grace was at work and Georgie was off when the team practiced so Georgie always ended up there, but today was vastly different. As she sat on the very uncomfortable bleachers with her dogs under her feet she received a phone call that would change their life forever.
"Hello?" She answers, it was Grace's number, but why was she calling now? She was busy being a waiter and she never interrupted Olive's soccer practice before.
"Oh good you answered!" Grace's voice sounded panicked causing Georgie to immediately tense up. Why was the always calm and collected Grace sound like that? What had happened to cause her to panic? A million thoughts were running in Georgie's mind, but the last thing she would've thought was said. "The flight my family was on returned our family is back! I need you to get Olive to the airport as soon as possible." Grace says and Georgie had to take a moment to absorb what she had heard.
"Wait what!" Georgie asks in shock. Did she hear that right, how, where, when so many questions came at once, but she knew Grace was just as shocked as she was so she held her tongue. "Olive come here, we have to go!" Georgie calls out to the fifteen year old trying to keep her voice even.
"What why?" The fifteen year old asks in confusion the soccer ball being held at her right side and a smile on her face. Olive was so happy, and Georgie knew that her finally found happiness was about to change. For better or for worse, Georgie didn't know but life was going to be different from here on out.
"I'll explain in the car now let's go." Georgie says in a no nonsense tone and Olive furrows her eyebrows in utter confusion at why her friend was so on edge, but she didn't dare not follow Georgie.
