CHAPTER 5 BETRAYAL
AUTHOR POV
Emma hurries through the winding halls of Hogwarts, her mind racing. The stone corridors seem darker and colder than before, every step echoing ominously off the walls. She can feel Jimin's presence somewhere close, and her heart beats faster with a mixture of dread and determination. The memory of his shadowy figure in the mirror lingers in her mind, making her doubt everything she thought she knew about him.
Emma steps out into the courtyard, the night air cool against her skin. The moon casts an eerie glow over the castle grounds, and there, standing under a large oak tree, is Jimin. He looks calm, as if he's been waiting for her, but there's something distant in his expression—something guarded.
Jimin:
(softly, but with a hint of expectation)
"You came."
Emma's jaw clenches, the wave of questions and uncertainty crashing through her. She's not here for pleasantries. She needs answers.
Emma:
(her voice sharp, cutting through the silence)
"Of course I came. But now I need to know the truth, Jimin. All of it."
Jimin shifts slightly, his eyes flickering with an unreadable emotion. For a moment, it seems like he's about to speak, but then he looks away, as if avoiding her gaze.
Jimin:
"There are things... you're not ready to understand yet, Emma."
Emma feels a surge of anger rise up inside her. She's heard enough of this. All her life, people have kept things from her, treated her like she was too fragile to handle the truth.
Emma:
(her voice rising with frustration)
"I'm tired of being told what I am or am not ready for! You've been keeping secrets from me ever since we met. I saw something tonight—something in that mirror. You know more about me than you're letting on, Jimin. Why won't you just tell me the truth?"
Jimin remains silent for a moment, his face unreadable. Then, finally, he speaks, but his voice is softer, as if he's choosing his words carefully.
Jimin:
"It's not that simple. There are forces at play here, Emma—things you can't yet comprehend. If I told you everything, it might put you in more danger than you already are."
Emma steps forward, her eyes flashing with anger and hurt.
Emma:
"Danger? I'm already in danger, Jimin! My whole life has been a lie. My parents weren't even my real parents. I don't know who I am, or what I'm supposed to be. And now, I find out you've been hiding things from me too? After everything we've been through?"
Jimin's face tightens, a flicker of guilt crossing his features, but still, he avoids answering her directly.
Jimin:
"I didn't mean to hurt you, Emma. But I'm trying to protect you. If you knew everything... if you understood the bond between us, you'd see that—"
Emma cuts him off, her voice cold.
Emma:
"The bond between us? Is that why you've been helping me? Because of some... magic bond? Not because you care, not because you wanted to, but because you had to?"
Jimin winces at her words, but he doesn't deny it. Instead, he stays silent, his expression pained.
Emma:
(her voice breaking with betrayal)
"So, it's true. All this time, it was never about me. It was about whatever magic is tying us together, wasn't it?"
Jimin steps forward, reaching out as if to touch her, but Emma pulls back, glaring at him.
Jimin:
"No, Emma, it's not like that. Yes, the bond is real. It's part of our magic—it's something that links us, something ancient. But I do care about you. I've always cared."
Emma shakes her head, her eyes filling with unshed tears. She feels torn between the connection she thought she had with Jimin and the betrayal she now feels.
Emma:
"You had your chance to tell me the truth. But instead, you lied. You let me believe we were just friends—just two people trying to figure this out together. But all along, you were keeping things from me. I can't trust you anymore."
Jimin's face falls, and for the first time, he looks genuinely hurt. He takes a deep breath, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jimin:
"I never wanted to lie to you, Emma. But the truth... it's dangerous. There are people who would use your power for their own purposes. People who have been looking for you since the day you were born. I've been trying to protect you from them, to keep you safe."
Emma's eyes narrow, suspicion swirling in her chest.
Emma:
"Who are these people? And why do they want me?"
Jimin hesitates again, dodging her question.
Jimin:
"There's so much you still don't know—about your family, about your magic. But I swear, everything I've done has been to protect you."
Emma's frustration boils over. She's done with half-truths and cryptic answers.
Emma:
"I don't want your protection, Jimin. I want the truth. You keep talking about this bond between us, but I never asked for it. I never agreed to it."
Jimin steps closer, his voice desperate now.
Jimin:
"You can't just reject the bond, Emma. It's a part of who we are. You felt it the moment we met, didn't you? That connection—it's not something you can just walk away from."
Emma feels the familiar pull of the bond between them, the magic that hums beneath her skin whenever Jimin is near. But this time, instead of drawing her in, it feels like a weight—a chain binding her to something she never asked for.
Emma:
(her voice firm, her eyes blazing with determination)
"Maybe I can't break the magic, but I can walk away from you. I won't be controlled by something I didn't choose. I'll find out the truth on my own."
Jimin's expression falters, his eyes widening in disbelief.
Jimin:
"Emma, you don't understand—"
Emma turns away from him, her hands trembling as she fights back tears.
Emma:
"No, Jimin. You don't understand. I don't need your protection. I don't need you. I'll figure this out without you—and without that bond."
She takes a step back, putting distance between them, the weight of her words heavy in the air. Jimin's face is etched with pain and regret, but Emma doesn't look back. The bond between them still hums, but she's determined not to let it control her.
Jimin:
(his voice barely a whisper, filled with sorrow)
"Emma, please... don't do this."
Emma's heart aches, but she steels herself, her voice resolute.
Emma:
"I have to."
Without another word, Emma turns and walks away, leaving Jimin standing alone under the moonlit sky. She doesn't know where she's going, or how she'll find the answers she's looking for, but one thing is clear—she can't trust Jimin, and she won't let the bond between them define her.
As Emma disappears into the shadows of the castle, Jimin watches her go, his hands clenched at his sides. The bond between them pulls at him, a constant reminder of what he's just lost. But deep down, he knows this isn't the end—because the truth Emma is searching for is far darker than she realizes. And no matter how hard she tries to break free, their fates are bound together in ways even he doesn't fully understand.
Scene fades as Emma walks alone through the darkened halls of Hogwarts, her heart heavy but her mind set on finding the truth—no matter the cost.
Scene: Emma walks away from Jimin, her chest heavy with emotion, but her mind is set. She's determined to carve her own path in this new world, even if that means doing it alone. As she re-enters the castle, her footsteps echo down the long corridors. Soon, a younger student—a first-year—approaches her, guiding her to her dormitory.
First-Year Student:
(nervously looking up at Emma)
"Professor McGonagall told me to show you to your dormitory. It's this way."
Emma nods in silence, following the student. As they climb several staircases, she steals glances out of the castle windows, the moonlight reflecting off the distant lake. It feels like the world has shifted since she learned the truth about her parents, the bond, and Jimin's deception. Now, there's an undercurrent of something darker looming, and she's not sure what it is yet—but she can feel it.
After a few minutes, they reach a large wooden door with intricate carvings. The first-year student pushes it open, revealing a cozy dorm room lit by enchanted lanterns. A few girls are scattered around the room, unpacking and chatting. The room is warm, the walls lined with tapestries, and in the far corner, a bed with Emma's name embroidered on the headboard catches her eye.
First-Year Student:
"Here we are. This will be your bed. I'll leave you to get settled."
Emma nods absentmindedly as the first-year student slips away, closing the door behind her. She glances around, taking in the faces of her new roommates. Most of them don't seem to notice her arrival, except for one girl who turns to Emma with a bright smile, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.
Girl:
"Hi! You must be Emma! I'm Tessa. I heard you're new here, too."
Tessa is small, with curly auburn hair and freckles sprinkled across her cheeks. She bounces on her feet with an infectious energy that feels almost comforting in the midst of Emma's storm of emotions. Despite everything, Emma finds herself smiling back, though it doesn't quite reach her eyes.
Emma:
"Yeah, I'm new. Nice to meet you."
Tessa:
(grinning)
"It's going to be great having you here! Don't worry, I'll show you the ropes. I've been reading about Hogwarts since I was a kid. It's a lot to take in, but you'll get the hang of it."
Tessa's enthusiasm is a brief reprieve from the weight pressing down on Emma's mind. As she begins to unpack her things, she can't help but notice a figure sitting by the window, silently watching. The girl, with sleek black hair and piercing dark eyes, barely acknowledges Emma's presence. Something about her is unsettling, like she's waiting for the right moment to strike.
Tessa leans in and whispers to Emma, noticing her glancing at the girl by the window.
Tessa:
"That's Lyra. She's a bit... well, let's just say she keeps to herself. Don't worry, she's not one to make friends easily."
Emma frowns slightly but nods. There's something more to Lyra than meets the eye—something dangerous. Emma can feel it in the way Lyra's eyes seem to pierce through her. She finishes unpacking and sits on her bed, trying to shake off the uneasy feeling gnawing at her.
Later that night, after the rest of the girls have drifted off to sleep, Emma lies awake, staring at the ceiling. The events of the day weigh heavily on her mind. The revelation about her true lineage, Jimin's betrayal, and the magic bond she never asked for—it's all too much to process. She feels trapped in this new reality, unsure of who to trust.
A soft knock on her bedpost startles her. Tessa peeks over from the next bed, whispering.
Tessa:
"Hey, you okay? You've been quiet since you got here."
Emma sighs, turning on her side to face Tessa.
Emma:
"Yeah, I'm just... it's a lot. This place, everything. It's overwhelming."
Tessa gives her a sympathetic smile.
Tessa:
"Yeah, I get it. Hogwarts is amazing, but it can be scary, too. Just take it one day at a time. And if you ever need to talk, I'm here."
Emma smiles softly at Tessa's kindness.
Emma:
"Thanks, Tessa. I appreciate it."
As Tessa drifts back to sleep, Emma closes her eyes, trying to find some peace. But a gnawing sense of unease lingers.
The next morning, Emma joins her new classmates at breakfast in the Great Hall. The enchanted ceiling reflects the morning sky, and the long tables are filled with students chatting and laughing. Emma sits between Tessa and a few other girls, trying to blend in. But her mind is elsewhere—back in the conversation with Jimin, the feeling of betrayal still raw.
As she picks at her food, she feels eyes on her. Looking up, she catches Lyra watching her from across the table, her expression unreadable. It sends a chill down Emma's spine, but she doesn't look away. There's something calculating in Lyra's gaze, something that makes Emma feel like she's being studied.
Emma:
(to herself, quietly)
"Why does she keep staring at me?"
Tessa notices Emma's discomfort and leans over.
Tessa:
"Just ignore her. Lyra's weird like that. She's been at Hogwarts longer than most of us, and there are rumors that she has connections to... well, some not-so-good people."
Emma's curiosity is piqued.
Emma:
"Like who?"
Tessa hesitates, glancing around before answering in a hushed tone.
Tessa:
"There are whispers that she's connected to an old, powerful family with ties to dark magic. No one really knows for sure, but... she's not someone I'd want to cross."
Emma feels a knot tighten in her stomach. Something about Lyra doesn't sit right with her, and the longer she stays at Hogwarts, the more she feels like Lyra is watching her every move.
Days pass, and Emma tries to settle into her new life at Hogwarts. She attends classes, practices her magic, and spends time with Tessa, who quickly becomes her closest friend. But no matter how hard she tries to focus on her studies, the weight of the secrets she's uncovered—and the ones still lurking—continue to haunt her.
One evening, as she sits in the common room, attempting to read a spellbook, she notices Lyra slipping out of the room quietly, her eyes darting around as if she's checking to see if anyone is watching. Emma's heart races with suspicion. Unable to shake the feeling that Lyra is hiding something, she quietly follows her out of the common room and down the darkened hallways of the castle.
Emma trails Lyra down a series of winding staircases until they reach a hidden passageway near the dungeons. Emma presses herself against the wall, listening as Lyra meets with a hooded figure. Their voices are low, but Emma catches fragments of their conversation.
Lyra:
(in a hushed, conspiratorial tone)
"She has no idea who she really is. She doesn't even know what she's capable of. But soon, she will. And when the time comes, we'll strike."
Emma's heart stops. They're talking about her.
Hooded Figure:
(his voice cold and menacing)
"Make sure she doesn't suspect anything. We can't afford for her to figure it out before we're ready. When the time is right, we'll take her—just like we planned."
Emma feels the blood drain from her face. She steps back, trying to stay hidden, but her foot accidentally scrapes against the stone floor, the sound echoing in the corridor. Lyra's head snaps toward the noise, her eyes narrowing. Emma's heart pounds in her chest as she holds her breath, praying she hasn't been spotted.
After a tense moment, Lyra turns back to the hooded figure, continuing their conversation, but Emma knows she's running out of time. She can't stay hidden much longer. Silently, she retreats back down the hallway, her mind spinning with the revelation.
Lyra wasn't just suspicious—she was planning something. And it involved Emma.
Back in her dorm room later that night, Emma sits on her bed, her hands trembling. She can't trust Lyra. But now, she has to wonder—who else might be involved? Was Jimin part of this? Was the bond just another way to control her?
Emma looks out the window at the dark night sky, feeling more alone than ever. She has no idea who her real enemies are, but she knows one thing for sure—she has to be careful. Because in this place, danger is lurking around every corner, and the betrayals run deeper than she ever imagined.
