Hi dear. Yet another early update... ♥️

A flashback to early grade 10.
Grade 10 and 11 are the grades where Sri Lankan students study for the Ordinary Level exam which is held in December.

And once they passed that they graduate to grade 12 in the coming August. And the in-between time period {from Dec. to Aug.} is a long term vacation.

And after the vacation, they go through two years of studying {grade 12 and 13} and at the end of it students sit for their Advanced Level examination.

~FLASHBACK ~

"Ooh... Here comes the Lord"

Nethwan shouted as soon as he saw Irfan appearing from the corner of the road.
He jumped from the short wall that he was sitting on to welcome his friend.

And he had obvious reasons to call him "Lord" as he was the one that was in charge of paying for the snacks that day.

"Hi, highness."  Yohan greeted him as he neared.

"I got the stuuuuff".

Muttered Irfan quite dramatically in a low voice as if he was bringing in some drugs with him.

"So Where are we going?"
Asked Yohan getting down from the short wall he was sitting on.

"Nowhere!. Cuz I didn't bring any money with me.".  Stated Irfan on a serious note and an "Aaaah?!" erupted from the group.

"What? You thought I'm a son of a millionaire?. Here you go"  Irfan questioned in his surprise as he distributed the ten-rupee snack packets among his friends.

"You stingy ass! You don't have to be a son of a millionaire to spend!" Abiman remarked. And after a pause, he added  "You only got to be a  lovesick idiot like my brother".

The group laughed all together at that.

"Speaking of Adhithya, when did you  two get here?" Yohan asked as he had noticed that Abiman was the first to come to the place ever since Adhithya began dating Dinara.

                     Before that, they had never been early birds. So Yohan suspected that Adhithya's new affair had something to do with it.

"Probably an hour ago!"
Complained the younger of the twins.

"Fudge! That is some next-level dedication"

Shouted Nethwan in surprise as he stopped munching on his snake for a split second.

"I honestly wonder how he is balancing his love life with his studies! I'm already struggling with Science and History" Yohan wondered.

They were all three months into their grade ten syllabus and it was already giving them headaches.

It was almost as if the time had wings because it was gone the second it came.

      In April they were to have their first term test and no one was fully prepared for it. According to the rumours "Ordinary Level exam " was nothing but a piece of cake compared to "Advanced Level".
                               Some "Advanced Level" students that passed the exam with outstanding marks told media that they did not even study for their "Ordinary Level" exam but instead dedicated their time to do sports and other extracurricular activities. That was because when it comes to difficulty "Ordinary Level" exam was next to nothing!.

AND THAT WAS ONE BIG FAT LIE.

Nine subjects and an enormous syllabus that came with each one of them!

It was too much for a teenager to bear!

Even teachers complained about how much they had to teach!.

One of Yohan's classmates at school went to a tuition class and he was even homeschooled for science. And that meant he learnt the same thing three times!

Yet he was also complaining about the upcoming term test.

SO  YEAH WHATEVER THAT THEY SAID WERE WRONG. AND THAT WAS AS CLEAR AS A CRYSTAL!

"Speaking of Romeo here he comes!"
Irfan said as Adhitya and his girlfriend Dinara appeared from the corner of the road.

They were walking so close to each other hand in hand, with their shoulders touching, like the sweet teenage couple they were.

Or like two slugs that were stuck together!

Dinara was wearing a coffee coloured mini gown while Adhitya wore a light brown shirt paired up with black pants.

It reminded Yohan of the time when he and his latest ex-girlfriend used to go on dates, wearing matching outfits and wasting money on cafes.

                   They broke up last December as both of them decided that they were distracting one another. And Soha said that she wanted to focus on her studies more than anything.

Yohan was kind of pissed off when she decided to break up with him because she wanted to do Biology for her Advanced Levels'.
                                 And to choose Biology one must have outstanding passes on their Ordinary Levels'. And having a boyfriend was nothing but a distraction that would make her impossible to concentrate on her studies.

Especially someone that is going to do "Commerce" because as Commerce was an easy subject they would not become a suitable couple for each other!.

Even though the very idea baffled him at the time Yohan kept his mouth shut.

Of course, he knew that Soha was a hard-working girl. She put her education before anything and was stressed when her ranking fell down.

                               And as time passed their relationship was getting dull and tasteless and Yohan was completely fine with putting an end to their love affair.

Unknowingly Yohan's eyes were set at Anuthi as he was sunk deep in his own thoughts of his gone girlfriend. Even though he was somewhat relieved that their relationship came to an end, he still wished that they discussed and sorted things out.

A whistle from Nethwan brought him back to life.

"Why the hell are you goggling your eyes at that chubby chick huh.?"

Nethwan questioned with his lips quivering as he tried to hold back his laughter.

"Huh?".
Yohan who was brought back to earth from daydream land questioned.

"Who is that?"
Adhitya asked loudly making Yohan frown.

"Who?"
Yohan was dumbfounded at what is going on.

"Dianara's friend you were drooling over,"  Irfan said as he laughed, almost choking on what he was snacking.

Yohan looked at the girl they meant and as soon as he noticed the colour of the top she was wearing, he knew that fate was in a bad mood with him!.

"Oh SHUT UP!"

Threatened Yohan as he foresaw what was coming.

Yohan was wearing a pastel pink t-shirt and so did she!

From afar it looked almost identical and that was enough for his friends to think of them as a match!

"Shut up! Oh, come on! Don't be so annoying guys! It is nothing but a coincidence!"

Even though Yohan tried his level best, he had already become the new "bite" of the group!

"What was her name Adhi? "
Abhiman asked while cackling because of the embarrassing coincidence that Yohan had to go through.

"I'll ask Dinara and tell you!"

Yohan glared at Adhithya who was showcasing his dimples as his smile was bigger than so that of the Cheshire cat.
But not in a creepy manner though.

And at that moment Yohan knew that there was no coming back. Until his friends find a new "bite" to make fun of, he has to be the laughing stock of the group because of a stupid coincidence and an unfortunate daydream he had.

So here is a flashback to the time when they were in grade 10. Two years before their Ordinary level exam that will pave way for their Advanced Level exam. {which is held in the time period when this novel mainly takes place.}

Personally, for me, Ordinary Levels were a jolly well time.
{there was nothing called Covid back then!}
