Chapter ~12
Like the plants that languished in the drought, Anuthi was feeling lifeless and weak.
It was just too much.
So much pressure and so much stress were crushing her confidence making her a mess.
It had squeezed the final drop of energy and enthusiasm out of her body that she just could not cope with the subject anymore. ECON!. That ruthless subject.
The reason for all the troubles that she was going through at the moment. The reason for all the trouble the world was going through at the moment. The reason for global warming even!
Thoughts were making her impossible to leave her bed. They were tying her down to her bed glueing her to the bedsheets that she had not changed in weeks. Anuthi felt like she had not slept for a day when in reality she had overslept last night.
She felt tired and unenthusiastic.
Tried of her monotonous life.
She felt like there was no blood left in her body. She felt as if somebody had drained blood from her veins and replaced it with a dull watery liquid.
Last night it rained and when it did Anuthi's room turned in to an oven which made her sweat profusely. So when she woke up the following day her hair was all wet and tangled up. As she was turning to her left and right in her sleep to find a cool spot in her bed.
Anuthi tilted her head to grab all the hair that was wet and greasy after she succeeded in the struggle to get the hairband out from the tangled mess.
She stretched the band and collected the mess that had not been combed since who knows when. And afterwards made a bun with her unkempt hair that looked as messy as a crows' nest.
What a way to go...
The area under her chin and her neck felt so gross and greasy thanks to the sweat that got collected there.
Anuthi grabbed a corner of her white bed sheet and tried to wipe the oily feeling away. The corner she grabbed had a slight tawny colour to it and was sweat soken in a matter of seconds.
Turning to one side, the depressed girl observed her room with her dull eyes.
At the very entrance of her room, the corner that the door would cover once it was opened, was a pile of dirt from a few months ago.
Her study table was as same as a mountain range that was made out of book piles.
The clothing rack that was meant to be an array of the clothes that she wore for classes or whenever she was forced to go out in public, whether it's a dinner at a family friend's or shopping with her mom and sister, stood in an abandoned corner, neat and tidy. The t-shirts were nicely folded and trousers hung on hangers so that they would not have fold marks.
And that was the only thing that can be considered neat and clean in the whole room. That was of course if you ignore the cobwebs on the hangers that were there as a result of spiders taking over the uninterrupted corner of her room.
Right next to it was her cupboard that she stored her "home clothes". And as she Anuthi was in the middle of a pandemic the clothes on that one were her "go-to" every single day.
The two drawers that were there, one for her underwear and the other for her sanitary napkins were pulled out as they had always been ever since the beginning of the lockdown resulted from the pandemic. And Anuthi could tell which one was which as the underwear drawer had a bra hanging out from the corner of it.
A t-shirt, pyjama short and another t-shirt that was torn and had holes on its' hem proudly rested at the foot of the cupboard. The shirt that was mentioned at the very end was torn not in the name of fashion but in the name of over-enthusiasm.
The over-enthusiasm of the five-year-old "Leo", the self-proclaimed lion.
Of course, Leo became lion, not in a physical sense. But with the way that it behaved as it slept all day as lions did and rarely killed a bird or some small animal that would dare to step into his territory.
The four-year-old, hyperactive adopted doggie had no breed what so ever. It was pitch black in the belly. And had brown spots on its white back.
It was a typical Sri Lankan dog that would bark at its owner and bite them when it was not well provided and would sleep like a dead if a robber ever broke into the house. Or would jump on to any stranger and lick them if they offered it a bone.
And according to Anuthi's mother, Leo adopted those qualities from Anuthi.
And to quote her on that, what she always said was, "Oya ballath narak une Anu hinda thama!" {This dog is also ruined because of you Anu!}
To find some motivation Anuthi decided to see what was on her phone.
So she channelled all her physical strength into it and tried to snake her way towards the edge of her bed
Succeeding in it she took the phone with the broken phone cover on to her hand.
Her phone badly wanted a new phone cover and was too broke to afford that. If she was to ever ask for one from her mom or dad she knew what the answer would be.
"Go get a job and buy yourself one!"
That was the answer she got every time she asked for something, literally everything whether it would be an extra book for her studies or something for herself and only God knew how much she loathed that one sentence from the very bottom of her heart.
Anuthi squinted her eyes as the bright phone screen greeted her and she felt like she was blinded for a second.
And she instantly regretted the decision.
Anuthi stared at her phone screen that appeared first after she unlocked her phone.
It only had WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams and YouTube because the "National Institute of Education" uploaded videos of lessons and revisions that were hours long there.
And even though Anuthi created the first page of her phone that way, she never really made use of it as things got bored for her after a few days.
Anuthi turned on mobile data and notifications started to flow in from Instagram, YouTube, Viber and of course WhatsApp.
WhatsApp, the app where she got bullied.
The app that she dreaded opening in the past couple of days because she did not want to see people making fun of her unreasonably.
She did not want to see people calling her "someone that overreacts or a pain in the ass".
Or "someone that gets mad every easily and was always sad".
Deep inside she knew what she did was not wrong. She did not deserve to be treated that way but something told her that they, her bullies were right.
Others wouldn't have joined if it was something wrong right?
Was she really overreacting?
The reason why all of these questions haunted her was because of this stupid app.
WhatsApp the worst app ever!
It was the worst app to exist in human history as if not for it Yohan would not have made fun of her.
And to add insults to injury she knew her feeling would never be reciprocated by him as he must clearly be thinking of her like an idiot.
He must be laughing at her as he send her those messages.
Even though she dreaded it Anuthi clicked on the voice message that was sent to her as she longed to hear Yohan's voice that she had not heard in ages.
...................
"Um... Anuthi, listen! I know what happened was something bad. I'm sorry for it...I truly am. I actually got blamed by my brother for it."
And then there was a moment of silence. "Probably in respect for his lost dignity and swollen head that had come back to the normal size", Anuthi sarcastically thought.
"I made sure all the posts got deleted. And also we're planning to create another group which we will make 'admin only' so you don't have to worry about it. If you don't mind I can add you to that group. I'm pretty sure nothing like that will happen...Once again I'm truly and genuinely sorry."
"Oh wow. How very considerate of him!" thought Anuthi bitterly.
Is this a trap of some sort?
Why would he worry this much about this?
Also, why would he even care to continue harassing me on the other hand!
Thoughts engulfed the confused girls head as she thought of a reply to send back.
And quite spontaneously Anuthi pressed hard on the mic icon before sending him a voice message as a reply.
And even though it was something that Anuthi had not even thought twice or found weird about what kind of an impact would it have upon the receiver at the other end?
Yohan, her crush that almost crushed her heart.

BTW
Which dog is the better one?
Willy or Leo?
Probably I'll write a short story for the two and name it the tale of two doggies.
Or...
The tail of two doggies?
