A Restless Night
Cassie sighed as she looked over at the three kids who were now fast asleep curled up together with the two boys cuddled up on her lap. Cassie just carefully put an arm around Carlos as she knew that he liked knowing she was there. It always brought him comfort.
She then used her other arm to hold Mal close to her and carefully positioned Luke closer to her as well. Cassie knew that she shouldn't be worrying herself right now. She was fine at least for now and so was Mal but she just couldn't help but worry.
Things had been hard from the start with her being a single mom of three young kids, but they had been managing it just fine. That was until Cassie's type 1 diabetes diagnosis about six months ago. That had completely changed things for not just her but for the family as well.
Money became extremely tight and she had to start working extra hard to provide for them and even that was barely enough. Now here she was having to add another expensive expense onto everything. Not to mention the emotional drain that this had on her as well. Constantly feeling sick and having to constantly monitor herself and her levels.
All it would take would be one slip up and she could end up in the hospital or worse. It was a lot for her to manage and she was an adult. Cassie had no clue how she was going to do that with Mal. Mal is just a baby right now. It's hard enough taking care of a toddler.
Toddlers were always testing their limits and still trying to explore and learn. Mal could barely even talk right now. How was Mal supposed to express to her when she wasn't feeling well or when she was feeling low or high. Cassie was going to have to constantly monitor and be on top of everything.
Mal loved to explore and it's not like Mal can manage her own blood sugar. It was now up to Cassie to manage both Mal's and her own now. "Mommy," Cassie heard snapping her out of her thoughts as she looked over to see Carlos was now awake. Cassie just quickly put on a smile as she looked over at the young boy.
"Yeah pup?" Cassie responded back causing the small boy to giggle a little as he liked when his mommy would call him pup. "How long do we have to stay here?" Carlos asked Cassie as he always felt nervous when he was away from his own bed. He also had a fear when it came to hospitals. They always made him uncomfortable and scared.
He could still remember the last time he was here. Well not the last time, but the time before that. Last time he was here was when Mal was born, but the time before that was terrifying. It was back when his Uncle Frankie had been babysitting for him and Luke. Mal hadn't been born yet, but his mommy was pregnant with her at the time.
*Flashback*
"Are you sure you can handle this?" Cassie asked her younger friend as she was feeling nervous about leaving the twins with him. She would have left them with her mom, but her mom needed a break as well. Cassie was alone again as her boyfriend and the father of all 3 of her kids had left again. He had left the first time before she had the twins claiming that he wasn't ready to be a father.
He came back though almost a year ago claiming that he had made a mistake. He promised things would be different this time. What a joke that was. The second she had ended up pregnant again he was out the door claiming that once again it was just too much to handle.
With him gone and her back to being alone Cassie had been really struggling lately with being pregnant. It made things a lot harder for her and she found herself relying more on her mom for help.
Cassie knew that her mom needed a break though and that's how she found herself at her friend's house right now."Yes of course. I know what to do. I grew up watching you, didn't I?" Frankie playfully told Cassie who smiled a little bit. "Well I was the best, but I'm serious Frankie. They're my babies and my whole life. If anything happens to them I swear," Cassie began but didn't get to finish as Frankie just waved her off.
"Cassie, I promise they'll be fine. You know me I'm very responsible," Frankie told Cassie trying his best to sound confident. Cassie sighed as she looked over at the two boys that were playing with their toys. She really had a bad feeling about this, but she was desperate at this point.
Frankie was all she had. She was giving her mom a break, she didn't exactly have a dad ever, and Nora was working with her. Along with her other band mates, so she couldn't exactly have them babysit.
She also needed to work as much as she could right now before she would get too far along and not be able to. They really needed the money. "Uh huh whatever you say. If anything happens to my babies you'll be sorry," Cassie threatened.
"Yes your majesty. I'll watch them like a hawk," Frankie jokingly told Cassie who just laughed a little as she couldn't help it. She knew that she should be more stern, but Frankie always had a way of making her laugh. "You better," Cassie told him as she just went over to the twins and held her arms out.
"Okay mommys leaving. Can I get a hug?" Cassie told the two boys in her gentle voice causing the two of them to stop playing as they just ran into her arms and hugged her. "Mommy don't go!" Carlos cried out as he clung onto Cassie not wanting her to leave.
"Aw I know I wish I could stay too, but mommy has to get to work. I'll be back soon. Be good, okay. I love you," Cassie told the twins as she just hugged them again before carefully removing herself from their grasp and leaving.
"And she's gone. It's just us boys now. What should we do for fun?" Frankie told the younger boys who just smiled. "We should have a race!" Luke exclaimed excitedly. "Yeah, let's have a race!" Carlos agreed. "Alright, that can be fun. We can have a race themed day," Frankie told the kids who jumped up excitedly.
"Yeah, race theme day!" The twins called out excitedly. "Okay let's see what should we do first?" Frankie asked the boys. Before either of them could answer though Frankie's phone went off. The older boy smiled when he saw that it was his friend.
"Hey what's up man," Frankie answered as he just accepted the call. "Nothing much, just kinda bored. You wanna hang out," the other voice answered back. Frankie just looked over at the twins. He wanted to hang out with his friend, but he also knew that he had committed himself to babysitting.
"I would love to but unfortunately I can't. I'm babysitting the twins for Cassie," Frankie told his friend over the phone. "That's fine we can still hang out. They can just join us," Frankie's friend told him. "You sure?" Frankie asked as he didn't want his friend to feel as though he had to. "Yeah I mean they're boys right. The more the merrier," the other teen told Frankie over the phone causing him to smile.
"Well if you're sure then alright cool. Yeah, let's hang out. Oh and I kinda promised them a race day. I hope that's okay," Frankie told his friend who just laughed. "Yeah that sounds fun. We should race cars together," Frankie's friend jokingly told him. "That would be pretty fun. I think we actually should do that," Frankie responded back. "Wait like for real?" The other boy asked while still on the phone.
"Yeah why not? It could be fun," Frankie replied back. "We could get in trouble though. I don't really feel like getting in trouble with the cops. What about if we went karting instead," Frankie's friend told him. "Yeah you're right I didn't even think about that. Yeah alright let's go karting instead. We can race there," Frankie responded back as he just finished up his conversation.
"What's going on?" Luke asked the older boy. "Yeah what's going on?" Carlos added. "We're gonna go to the go kart place. We can have our race there," Frankie told the twins who looked over confused as they didn't know what that meant.
"What's that?" The twins both asked at the same time, making Frankie laugh. "You'll see soon," Frankie told the two young boys as he just waited for his friend to get there.
*Flashback pauses*
"Hopefully not too long. You should try to get some sleep again it might help," Cassie told the young boy as she just pulled him closer to her again, snapping him out of his flashback. Carlos just smiled a little bit as he laid back on her.
"You're thinking about that day again aren't you?" Cassie asked Carlos who just slowly nodded. "It was scary," Carlos replied to Cassie. "I know it was scary to me too. Do you want to talk about it?" Cassie asked her son who just shook his head as he laid back against her and started to fall asleep again.
Cassie watched as he fell back asleep filling the room with silence again. She just closed her eyes as she tried to sleep as well, but it was no use as she couldn't seem to sleep. She was pretty sure it was all the anxiety and worry that she was feeling right now.
It didn't help that now she was thinking about that same incident again. It wasn't too bad but it could have been much worse and the thought of that really scared her. She could still remember how she felt when it all happened.
*Flashback starts again*
"Okay so um don't freak out," Frankie told Cassie over the phone as he tried his best to stay calm. "What do you mean by don't freak out? You don't start a conversation with "don't freak out!" Cassie told Frankie as she was already starting to panic and she didn't even know what was going on.
"Okay so everything is being handled. We did kinda have a bit of an incident though," Frankie nervously told Cassie as he knew that she was definitely going to get him for this. They had been racing with the go karts and Frankie had made the stupid decision to let the twins have one go kart while they each got their own. They had begged him to let them drive and ride on their own.
Frankie being the young cool uncle that he was had agreed to allowing them to do so. It went fine when Carlos was driving the go kart, but when they switched that was a different story. Luke didn't listen to the safety requirements and just started flooring it as fast as he could.
Frankie knew that he probably should have gotten involved at that point, but he was having too much fun with the racing and didn't think much about it. Other than the over speeding nothing else was happening.
That is until the young boy had decided to kick it up a notch further as he started to bump into other cars as if he was playing with bumper cars and not go karts. The force and the speed in which he was going had caused the kart to lose control as it slammed right into the barrier of the track.
"What do you mean by an incident! What's going on Frankie!" Cassie exclaimed as she was starting to lose her patience and was fearing the worst at this point. "Okay so I took the boys go karting," Frankie began but was interrupted.
"What do you mean you took the boys go karting! You're supposed to ask me first before you take them to go and do something like that," Cassie replied back as she couldn't believe Frankie had done that. Frankie knew that she was pretty chill when it came to what the kids could do as long as she had a say in it first.
"I'm sorry Cass. I didn't really think about it," Frankie told his older friend. "Just tell me what happened," Cassie responded back as she knew that he was stalling and it was honestly starting to freak her out more.
Frankie just took a deep breath before responding again. "Okay so um I took the twins go karting and they might have kinda crashed it into the wall," Frankie told Cassie nervously. "Wait what! How did that happen! Are they okay! Please just tell me they're okay!" Cassie rambled out as she started to panic more. She knew that the stress wasn't good for the baby, but she couldn't help it.
"Cassie relax stress isn't good for the baby, remember. The boys are fine. We're at the hospital right now, there's nothing too major. Just a few bumps and bruises," Frankie told Cassie as he tried his best to calm her down and downplay the situation.
He was feeling guilty right now. He knew that Cassie had trusted him to watch the kids and that he had messed up big time. "Just stay with them I'll be right there," Cassie quickly told Frankie as she hung up the phone and made her way to the hospital.
As soon as Cassie had found the room that the twins were in she rushed over as she just hugged them both close to her. "You said a few bumps and bruises. This looks way worse than just a few bumps and bruises," Cassie told her friend as she looked over at the two boys that were covered in bandages and they each had a cast on their arm.
"It looks worse than it is," Frankie told Cassie who just rolled her eyes as she just held the boys closer to her. "You are never babysitting again," Cassie told Frankie who just nodded. "That sounds fair," Frankie replied as he knew that it was best not to argue with her when she was in this state right now.
*Flashback ends*
The two boys had ended up being okay with the worst of it being each of them with a broken arm. While the boys ended up being okay it still didn't change the fact that Cassie could have lost them had that been a more severe case.
The thought of that happening was enough to keep her up at night. "Mommy?" Cassie heard again causing her to snap out of her trance as she looked over to see that Luke was now the one awake.
Author's Note: I'm sorry if this chapter was a little boring. I promise that the next chapters will be better. I wanted to do a chapter on what Frankie had done when he last babysat since I did hint at something earlier. This was the best way for me to fit that in. Anyway I hope you enjoyed and please let me know what you thought as votes and feedback are always helpful and welcomed.
